Default Ever get attitude from the bank tellers??

I have been really busy over the past week and I could not find the time to go to the bank to deposit my money.

So this morning I finally find the time to deposit my cash. About $3500, in hundreds and $20 bills mostly.

I wasn't actually trying to deposit it. I have a touition bill for $7000 and I wanted to pay some of that bill.

So I say to the teller as I hand him the bill 'I want to pay this' and take my money from my purse.

Well you would think I had taken an ak47 from my bag. He looks at it like he can't touch it. He actually told me he cannot deposit that much cash!! I'm like 'local merchants bring you bags and bags of cash all the time, you don't get to pick and choose who gets to deposit their own money into their own accounts. Then he scurries over to the manager's desk. A whispered conversation takes place and lasts for a moment or so. Another teller is called over and she whispers with them too. They kept looking over at me and being totally weird.

Then the guy teller comes back over and begins to count the money (with great difficulty I might add). All the while he keeps making these comments about ''Oh this is a lot of cash'' and trying to ask where I got it without exactly asking. So I'm like 'Oh, I stole it." and smile like I"m joking.

This is the first time anybody had ever reaised an eyebrow about my banking.

They made me feel like such a weird-o. Glad I pay my taxes tho. They probabally reported me to the government as soon as I left.

    Similar stories anyone??

There is a book "Winning Through Intimidation" trick of a real estate broker and his handling of cash was interesting. People would try to welsh on his comissions so he got in the habit of rushing to the bank and cashing the check before it could be stopped. And we're talking 6% of multi million dollar deals. May be interesting for you. Lots of sale techniques in there too.

Nope I have never had that happen. I have a small bank (well nationwide, but my branch is small). It's the only one I go to, and they know what I do and have offered to buy my one's before. LOL. I told them that I sell the back to the bar to reuse the next night and they were cool.

I always make deposits at night right after work on my way home, so tons of money isn't really an issue. But it is kind of funny when I put the wrong amounts in the envelopes.

I put so much in my checking and a slight bit more in my savings. I have gotten the cahs in the wrong envelopes before and the bank calls at like 9am to see what happened. But know if I do it they jusy automatically fix it.

And you are right, they probably did flag it. I think Mel told me that anything over a grand they flag. But at least you pay your taxes. Which is better than some girls I know.

I think they just didnt want to count it. i have had that happen before, I went through the drive thru with 3000 cash to deposit, they told me I could only deposit this much inside. I had done more before, but I was in a hurry so I went inside and told the inside teller, the drive thru guy got in trouble b/c they said they should take it no matter how much it is. I have never told anyone at my bank what I do but I think they have it figured out by now.

    Hi,

Not sure about your bank. Since 09-11 and the Patriot Act, banks are way more cautious about laundering money. The requirement to report is at cash transacitons greater than $10k. I doubt they reported it to the IRS or other gov't agency. They may have noted it for your file.

You can always change banks. But you should simply make sure you have a business style bank account. Many banks have limits on tellers and that is why there was an issue. Too much money for a junior teller. Merchant windows are prepared for the cash influx and can move it back to the vault/safe room for safety.

Although it is inappropriate for the young teller to make references as to where/how you came across the cash, you simply can say you are a performer and you are well "tip'd" for your performances and leave it at that.

I think you just got someone that wasn't suppose to transact merchant amounts of cash along with an extra dose of paranoia.

    Regards,

Oh good lord. I hate going to the bank. It's always an issue every time. Once I needed to deposit 1000 into my account, and this ghetto chick was like "Gurrrrrrlll, where'd you git a thousand dallers? Can I be adopted into yer family so I can have a thousand dallers?"

Fuckin hell man. 1k isn't even a lot of money. It's not like I walked up to her with a suitcase full of cash. So anyway I told her I won it at the casino. And she's like "Girl you ain't old enough to be at the casino, how'd you get in there?" I just nodded and smiled. Bitch I realize I look young (I'm 20 but look 16 and the age in canada to get in the casino is 19) but why don't you learn how to be more professional? I'll never return to that particular branch ever again.

And it's not the first time it's happened. On another occasion I had like, $700 I think (again it's really NOT a lot of money at all, in comparison to like, $100,000.) And I needed to get it changed to american funds because I was planning on going shopping in the states. This college-age chick working the teller was like "Was it your birthday?" I said no. She said "Oh, I just wondered how you got all this money." WTF???? If she thinks that is a lot of money she's got more problems then where I got it from.

Now I just get my parents to do my banking for me. And sometimes I'll do increments of $500 at a time. People really do need to learn how to be more professional when it comes to clients making deposits of 10k or less. If it's over 10k I completely understand the inquisition from a legal standpoint, however.

The clubs have those money counters. I like to count mine myself. I don't ever have THAT much cash that I need a machine to count it for me. Besides, I don't really trust a machine like that.

I've never had a problem with tellers. I know many people are just dipshits but geeeeez! Don't they get trained not to act all stupid around cash? They're working at a BANK after all, not friggin wal-mart!

Yeah, whenever I deposit money they give me funny looks. Specially because when I'm not at work I look and act like a wal-mart shopper. But I think they can tell by my attitude that I wouldn't put up with actual comments, so it just stays at the weird look level.

I personally find it a "treat" when I use a lot of singles be it for a purchase or depositing, and the cashier/teller comments, "Oh, quite a bit of singles, you must be a waitress?" I simply say no and continue on in silence. Some keep badgering, as I continue on with a simple no, others look at me like I should have to explain myself. Hey, I'm not here to make smalltalk, you do your job, and I'll keep on doing mine. Yeah, sometimes I'm kinda bitchy.

i've only had that problem when i was depositing cash in the small town bank, where i lived - but several hours from any club. i would often get raised eyebrows for anything over $500. the town was small enough that everyone at the bank knew what i did - before their curiosity overwhelmed them.

The vast majority of people get confused on a minute to minute basis. LOL

Ive never gotten any wierd flack. One time someone asked me if I was a waitress I just said yes and didnt say anything else and neither did they.
If I ever did get a rude comment or too much intrusion I would let the bank manager know.

The guy at the bank the other day was trying to be cute and asked me where I work to have all this money ( again it wasn't much like maybe $1200 ) and I looked him dead in the eye and told him the truth.... the hospital.

Bank tellers hear an odd accent and suddenly think I'm stupid and can't count dollars and cents, try to give me back less money thinking I wont notice and make me get vex. WTF. Had that happen soooo many times this year it's unbelievable.

Not all bank tellers are doofy. Where I live there's many self-employed people, so there's no badgering about big deposits.
Too bad there's so many bad stories here. My guess is they're trying to gauge your character, to see whether you would try to pass off counterfeit cash, or claim you were shortchanged when you weren't, etc.....
The funniest "multiple ones catch attention" story I have is when a little old lady saw me pay for my dog's spay surgery at the vet's with 60 one-dollar bills. She made a cute remark comparing me to her purebred cats (she was looking for a stud for them both) and I just left....I couldn't believe she was that observant.....aaaaaccck!

I have never heard a single comment from a teller, and I've deposited big stacks of ones after bachelor parties. They're professionals down here!

Say, "I was picking trash and found this old rusty ATM machine. I also found a crowbar and opened it and then found all this cash inside."
    -- or --
"I found it just outside in your bank parking lot under a car on the 'employees only' section."
    LOL

Or more boring... "Just transferring from one bank account to another; will this go on today's business?"

    Also...

You can get a cash bag and put it in the night deposit slot. Probably with a commercial account, but watch the monthly charges.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

    I know I know!

The further south you go, the faster they can count singles and the more likely people are to actually COUNT back your money to you when you get change.

Up north they count like retards and when you get change they just shove a fist of bills and coins in yer face and hollar 'Next!".

I used to deposits large chunks of cash for a business I worked for. Since we had business accounts they never blinked an eye but when I tried to cash a check for over $10k they gave me the IRS warning and told me they were going to have to fill out a form. My boss was like "hell no!" and told me to go to two different banks to get the cash so I was walkng around with about $11k in my purse downtown. good thing I never got mugged!

My dad has worked in the automotive industry for a while in various aspects. Now he works for a company that usually wholesales parts for Mercedes and BMW and other german cars but they do get regular customers who come in and want stuff for their cars. He's told me stories about guys coming in to buy rims that cost a LOT and pulling out big wads of cash. Also when he used to manage a place that worked on a lot of high end cars they had one guy who was a drug dealer who always brought his car in with bullet holes in it and paid with stacks of 1's. They didn't care. It's money, just as green as the next guy's money. Some of the stories he would tell about cocaine people left in their cars and the woman who thought there were radioactive waves in her Jaguar so she drove wearing a helmet would make me think a girl paying for something with cash wouldn't raise an eyebrow. Maybe bankers aren't as used to people who don't have a business account using a lot of cash because maybe a lot of people who strictly make cash just don't deposit it in the bank.

    Hey Pandah

The school lets you pay their bill like a telephone bill; show the teller the bill and hand over the $, and they pay the bill with the cash - no deposit into the acct.

I wasn't buying a money order of doing a wire. That's why I thought the attitude was wack.

Over the past 3 years I always pay my touition this way, but as far as I can recall I always happened to get the same teller in the past, this time I wasn't so lucky.

I wouldn't even have this problem if my stupid school had a cashier. 5 years ago some idiot decided that the school should not ACCEPT CASH (WTF???), only bank payments and money orders.

So next time I'm going to be a good girl and buy my money orders in $500 denominations.

I just feel like such an idiot, I never should have deposited that much cash at once.

I told my friends about it and everyone said I'm in for an audit because of this. The bank just made such a big deal over it, I know they reported me to the govt.

In addition to deposits and withdrawals over $10,000 per day, the Feds require reports of wire transfers or money order purchases over $3,000 as part of the money laundering rules, so if that's what he thought you meant he would have believed he needed to ask about the source of funds for that report.

None of which is to say I think he acted properly from the rest of your post, but it could explain his initial reaction a bit. If you want to continue to use this bank though, you really need to have a chat with the branch manager so 1) you understand their rules and requirements, and 2) they can do some serious retraining of their front line customer service staff.
