Sad Anyone else dealt with Parvo?

I had to take my baby to the vet today and she has Parvo. They are giving her Iv fluids and antibiotics. I have to call tommorrow and see if she better so she can come home or not.

Damn I miss the little furball so much. She usually sits in my lap while I'm online. The Doc says she has an 85-90% chance of full reocvery. Due to her age, it can't do as much damage as if she was younger.

The thing that really pisses me off is that the person I got her from said she had been given all her shots except for rabies, and the vet says she couldn't have gotten this if that were true. I feel so bad I believed that person, and now my babies life is at stake.

So has anyone else had a furbaby that has had it and survived? From what the vet says this is way more serious in canines that AIDS in a human. (That just made me feel SOO much better. *sarcasm*)

God, I just want her back so damn bad, I tried to cuddle with the cat, but she's being her normal antisocial self. (The cat is hubby's baby, and the dog is mine.) I even tried to get hubby to sit in my lap, but he's too heavy.

I called my bartender tonight and told him I couldn't work due to this, and he thinks I'm crazy, lol. He's like yeah, ok whatever. I said ok, I'll bring in the paperwork when I comeback to work. He's like really? Ok then, see you this weekend.

Anyway, I hope she's ok, and I'll repost later on her condition.

I have dealt with this a few years ago.It cost $500 and was worth every penny. The key thing is to catch it early enough. My prayers to your baby.

Good luck. I hope for a full recovery for her. I've never had to deal with this, but I am SOOOO attached to my little guys, I don't know what I'd do.

My dog had it when he was a puppy. (The vet made me feel bad for not getting him his shots in time. I was working full-time and had put it off. I felt awful.) We had another puppy along with my dog, but he died from the parvo (highly communicable).
Parvo is very common because the virus can survive in dirt for years and years....if you move to a house with parvo-infected soil & have un-immunized dogs, they will get sick.
Sorry to hear about this, but now many people who read this post will know about parvo. It is a painful illness for dogs, so get your dog shots, so the furbaby doesn't have to go through the pain.

They are doing all of that while she's there. As I said above, the person I got her from told me she already had her shots.

ARGH, that chick pisses me off so bad.

Yeah the Doc really scared me when she was telling me about it. It's the most dangerous of all of the canine viruses. It can withstand extreme temps, and live outside a host for up to 6 months. I have alreay bleached everything I can w/o damage. (hardwood floors, tables, some furniture, etc...) I also made a 10% bleach solution and sprayed down the whole backyard and front yard. (All of outside) and her crate/kennel. And I'm washing all her fabric toys in a light bleach solution (vet reccommemded it), and wiped down all the hard toys with it too.

She said (Vet) as long as I re-wash everything with plain water they will be safe for her to play with. I still think I'm going to buy her new ones anyway.

I'm so sorry to hear about this Kitana.

I haven't dealt with this exact illness in a pet but I did lose my all time favorite cat to a kidney disease a few years ago so I can relate to how you are feeling right now.

I hope your little furbaby is doing better soon !

My vet told me once they have it they can't get it again. I'm 1 for 2 with parvo, I have had dogs my whole life and only 2 have gotten it. The first one is out in the yard playing, the other did not make it. It was just last year and it still makes me sad. I was going to add a pic of her but it will just make me sad.

    Aww, BD I'm so sorry!

Anyway, I called the vet this morning and her puking is over with.

They called back around noon to ask for permission to set another Iv since hers came out (she was chewing on it). And they gave her a little water and she held it down!

So when I called back around 4, they said they had given her some Chicken broth like stuff to try to eat that would help her get her nutrients back. She has held it down so far, so it's looking pretty good.

    Thanks guys for being there.

Sounds like she's on the up and up, Kitana!

I'm thinking about you and your furbaby. When they get sick (with anything at all!) it hurts us so bad. Poor babies.

Sounds like she's doing good. I had a scare when I bought one of my little girls. After I brought her home she was puking and I rushed her to the Vet. After I said which pet store I bought her at he said "oh oh, it might be Parvo".....the store had a bad reputation for selling not so heathly doggies. Luckily she didn't but it was a horrible scare. And yes, it's so serious, but caught early chances are good. Now my little furry girl is almost 5 years old and doing great!

I hope she'll be alright! You are doing all that you can and are a good momma.

Yep. I had a lab-pointer mix that had it, and he survived it for 17 years. However, getting him through law school was a pain in the differential.

    OK guys; *update*.

I brought Tinkerbelle home this afternoon around lunchtime. I have to give her two different meds twice a day. (Fun, fun trying to get the pills down her though, lol.) And if she continues not to eat on her own, I have to keep force feeding her baby food.

But she was walking and jumping up and down on the couch and even barking at the oil rig across the street (fav outside thing to do), and she whined when I went to get the mail till I came back. She even played with the kiddo with her "tail" (actually real raccoon tail).

She still hasen't pooped, but the vet said not to worry for a day or two. I have to feed her (through a syringe) 2 oz every couple of hours, and it could take a day or so for the food to hit her bowels. If she hasen't had one by Wed morning though, I have to bring her back in.

SO I'm pretty happy all in all.

Total cost for puppy initally: $0
Total for food, crate, etc.. : $79
    Total Vet bills UTD: $751

Having a happy not sick puppy: PRICELESS
