Default Advice on short hair, wigs... and money?

I have a question that hopefully a few of you will be able to provide me with advice on:

I am returning to dancing in the near future after a 2 year break. I'm in the same shape I was when I quit, but I have two major concerns: one is that I have recently had braces fitted to my bottom teeth and the other is that I currently have short hair.

The hair is my biggest worry at the moment. The club I used to work at had a rule that short-haired dancers had to wear wigs. The club (supposedly a better one) I'm planning on working at have told me they have no such rule regarding short hair. Nonetheless I'm concerned that having short hair will affect my earnings potential. I have very thick, dark brown hair that was previously just a little past my shoulders, and customers used to compliment me on it all the time. Really it was never anything special, but I'm aware that long hair is often perceived as being more feminine- even I feel that way, so I can understand why customers would. Besides that, it was never my sparkling personality that got me dances (I'm shy, a poor conversationalist and I don't hussle), so I can't rely on getting by on that until my hair grows out a bit.

I know the clubs here are a lot less competetive than in the US where most of you are, but I'd love advice from anyone- doesn't matter if you've ever worn a wig- even if it's just your opinion on dancing with short hair I would welcome it.

I would be happy to wear a human-hair wig until my hair grows long enough -I've read the threads on wigs here and looked at a couple of sites linked from here and the wigs look just fine, I'm just worried because the state I live in allows touching of the dancers (within limits, obviously) and I don't want some disaster where a guy touches my hair and the wig comes off (I would be happy to tell customers I'm wearing a wig though)... or the classic one where a girl is on stage doing a pole trick and the wig comes flying off!! I'm sure that's not likely to happen, but the chances are probably higher of it happening with a wig novice like me! At the place I used to work there were only two girls who wore wigs: I had no idea that either had hair that wasn't real until I saw one in the dressing room taking hers off one night- she did all sorts of pole-work on stage, too; the other was a day shift dancer who I'd seen on stage so many times with hair half-way down her back, then one day she walked out of the dressing room after work with short hair (which also really suited her).

Also, given that there aren't exactly many wig places where I live I was wondering if people think it is a good or bad idea to order one online? If I do make the decision to get one I'd like to get it well before I start dancing again so I can get the hang of wearing it. I'm not interested at all in getting extensions- I want to keep the hair attached to my head natural.

Sorry for such a long post, but I really hope some of you are able to give me some opinions here

How short is it exactly? We'd really need a pic to properly judge.

One of the biggest moneymakers I know is bald with a dragon tattooed on her head- she wears wigs (the cheap synthetic ones too) and makes a killing. Sometimes she wears short-hair wigs, even, and does well.

As for the wig flying off- as long as your hair doesn't get caught on something, you should be fine- you'd pin the wig to your hair, so it would have to try hard for it to actually come off. Slip out of position, maybe.

We actually have a girl working with us who wears wigs every night. She has some really nice ones that look natural and as long as she dosen't get too energetic they stay on just fine. She can even do pole tricks as long as she holds it when upside dowm.
As for working with short hair I cant say for myself as I have very long hair. But I have known many girls with shorter than chin length hair who do quite well. You just have to remember that you wont have the instant 'srtipper' appeal to many so may have to chat more (the short haired girls I have known are generally talkers)
Another option if your har can hold it are false ponytails. They don't suit every body but are an easy cheap way to fake long hair.
Oh and please if your hair is shorter than your chin, don't get extentions! Waaaaaay too mullet and looks super fake..

Thanks for your replies When I say short I mean 'boy short'. I've only got the one photo of me with short hair, and it's not very good, but you can see just how short it is:

it was taken about a month ago, so my hair is very slightly longer now. By the time I take up dancing again it will be at that horrid 'in-between' stage where you can do absolutely nothing with it!

maybe try dancing with short hair - i know a lot of guys who like girls with short hair, and it'll probably something unique that you have that none of the other girls have. if it doesn't work out so good for you, then invest in a good wig. get some professional advice on how to attach it properly so it won't fall off.

Play around with it! Alot of guys like women who are fun! And by wearing you're short hair one night and some different wigs on other nights would be great imo!!!

    Good luck,

You're beautiful! You look great with short hair, maybe give it a try without a wig. If you're the only one with short hair, that could be a good selling feature for you.

If it really bothers you get a fake ponytail. I have semi short hair and get tired of styling much so I bought one for about $40 USD. No one ever asked and it was real human hair too so when a guy touched it ..it would feel the same.

Only thing is if you go the fake hair route youll have to take care of it to make it last long and have to buy new ones often.

The link didnt work for me but thats my 2 cents.

Hmm sorry the link has stopped working, maybe blogger doesn't like me posting direct links to photos? I'll just link to the original post it was part of:

My hair won't be long enough for even a fake ponytail, I don't think, so I'll probably wind up buying a wig just in case I feel it might help my earnings at this club. I haven't been to check it out yet, so I might ask some of the girls there their opinions when I do. I guess there would be no harm in seeing how I go with short hair like some of you have suggested, but I'll probably feel more secure with a back-up plan. I've been checking out wigs online with my boyfriend and another friend of mine and they're both making all sorts of suggestions... my boyfriend is of the opinion that guys aren't going to be looking too closely at the wig in a SC so it won't matter whether it's real or synthetic, but I think I'd feel better with a human-hair one. Is the difference obvious? What about the life-span of the wig?

Playing around with my appearance like Pamela suggested sounds like it could be fun! Thanks for your opinions guys, please keep 'em coming!

If you do dicide to buy a wig. you can always have it styled by a hairstylist. I buy wigs cheap and style them myself , so they don't look so grandmommy. If they have a part I color it with a my foundation. Men always think it's my real hair. Also the synthetic ones get sooooooo tangled especially if they are really long.

about the braces- it'd probably be expensive to get them redone, but you can get braces put on the inside part of your teeth, so they're not visible. also, you might try that invisalign stuff- i've heard good reviews.

i just talked to a wig owner over the phone -- i told them my hair fell out in clumps after dying it -- now it's boy short....but she suggested Dermafix wigs -- which are for people who are active.

also if you have it to spend. (about 3 or 4 g's)You could look into a suction wig. the kind actresses wear for roles. beyonce and serena williams also wear them. they take about 3or4 months to make and they are custom to your head so they stay on.

I would have really liked to have had either of those types of braces done, but the orthodontist told me that neither are appropriate for what they're trying to achieve with my teeth, which are actually perfectly even, but I need the roots of two realigned so I can get enough space between the roots to have those titanium implants put in my jaw and have crowns put on them... to replace some adult teeth that never formed. So now I have an ugly mouth for a year in order to hopefully make it look better for the long term... I hope it's worth it...

Those suction wigs sound fantastic, but I'm only looking to spend a couple of hundred.

    Thanks for all the suggestions
