    Default Body After Baby

I just had my first baby 10 weeks ago. I got super lucky and suffered no stretch marks and only gained about 25 pounds. Anyway, I have already lost all of the poundage but still need to tone up. I was wondering how many of you mommies have better bodies post baby than before, because I'm seriously thinking I'm looking pretty good!

That's not being "super lucky"; that's good discipline. Most women just don't understand that total weight gain during pregnancy should be between 25 and 30 pounds. A pregnant woman needs only an additional 300 calories per day. If this is adhered to, abdominal expansion and weight gain will be iminimal and stretch marks are generally significantly fewer. It's good to see some women are not following the Britney Spears method of gestation

Anyways, if you had a vaginal delivery, I'm sure your doctor told you the basic rules: pelvic rest for 6 weeks, no heavy lifting for 4 weeks, etc. By now at 10 weeks, you have free reign to do whatever you want So, whatever exercises you enjoy for increasing muscle tone and promoting lean muscle mass will be perfect. Congrats on the baby!

I gained 19 1/2 pounds with my daughter. And, I looked much better AFTER having her than before. I think it had a lot to do with tightening up my diet and keeping up my exercising schedule (I exercised 6 days a week with cardio and weight training until I was 7 1/2 months preggers...and then walking around the block was plenty.). I was helped with the increased metabolism. I still got stretch marks, but not until the last week of pregnancy (baby was 3 weeks, to the day, late)...they've gone down and while I was dancing...no one noticed nor cared.

It's going to take a little bit of time for your belly to not be "jelly-like". I think mine took about 3 months before my tummy was more firm, at least to the point where I felt comfortable having it exposed. But, even to this day...When I sit down, or whatever, I have a little "sag". Absolutely nothing can be done about that and I've learned to accept it with pride.

    Congrats on the baby!!

Congrats!!! What did you have, a boy or girl?
I went back to my pre-pregnancy size almost instantly, so I look about the same which I'm happy about - especially almost 14 years on (-:
The midwife was like wow, "Your tummy is flat!" right after my son was born. It wasn't totally as it was before but it / I was definatly back to normal after week except for my boobs which were huge! I beastfed for 2 years and my boobs went back to pretty much the same as before too (bigger nipples...)

Ok I gained 40lbs when pregnant i'm very underweight so the Docs wanted me to gain more. I was pretty much flat tummy as soon as Haley was out except slight puffyness which was gone in a week. Now i'm actually less then i weighted begore i got pregnant.

Aussie thats so great that tiy breastfed for 2yrs. Haley is 6months old now and still strictly breastfeeding so i know how much work, time & effort it takes.

Thanks! I had a little girl and she is so beautiful and perfect. She was teeny, tiny though weighing only 4 lbs when born (7 weeks premature). She just now weighs 8.5 lbs!

Anyway, I too, exercised up until I was 20 weeks preggers but then my doc told me to chill out b/c I was having some complications. I never had any "cravings" so I ate normally throughout pregnancy which resulted in the healthy weight gain.

I am already running again, about 20 miles a week (I was marathon training right b4 I found I was pregnant). So that has helped with the weight loss. Getting the strength back in my abs has been kinda tough though. Ab work is my least favorite exercise.

It just takes time. You can't expect that your body will be back to normal even after 6 months. I mean your hormones are still crazy right now even. You sound like you are doing all the right things. Congrats on the lil' bundle and don't worry you'll be back in shape ASAP!

I also gained 40 pounds during pregnancy. I now weigh about 115 lbs., but I looked better in pictures when I was super skinny. In person though, I guess I look better now.

Ok, I've never had any babies, and obviously, neither have you! What, you're going by certain standards you heard in a book, and trying to pawn them off as personal advice to her?(whether they're true or not?) Sorry Sorry! Had to vent on a man!

Yeah, but I would imagine most doctors learned from the beginning from books and lectures. Unlike most other physicians, I had training in OB/GYN after medical school since I wanted a broader knowledge base before I became a specialist. My procedure log includes about 30 deliveries and hundreds of sterile speculum exams / bimanual exams and prenatal/post-partum patient visits. So while obviously I've never had any babies myself as a 20-something male, I would like to think of myself as being relatively qualified to offer medical opinions on the subject.

congrats to you too! i just had my baby 6 weeks ago, and was actually wondering the same thing! i'm down to my pre-pregnancy weight, which is great, yay. BUT, i feel like i'm not toned- obviously one's body would be different after having a baby (my hips are wider than before). , but my stomach is just not as tight as before. i haven't been able to exercise again but i have been doing crunches. i am hoping that my stomach will tighten up again, the skin isj ust a little loose.

    oh well!

Hey! I have to tell you that I have three children and My body is just as good now if not better than before i had my children. The best way to tone your muscles back is to go back to work as soon as you are allowed. I started dancing when my second one was 5 weeks and went back to work when my third was three weeks. I had very healthy pregancies and babies. I get told all the time that i dont look like i haveany kids let alone three. The only give away is my boobies, b/c i too breastfed all of mine so they look a little used Good luck!

I wasn't going to comment but I can't help myself! Adrenaline,Doctors like you make me sick! You are a MAN who can NEVER get pregnant! You don't know what it feels like to be a woman.I had my twins 4 months ago and gained 65 pounds!I've since lost it all but I was just as big as Britney Spears! When you are pregnant and your stomach is growling are you going to sit and not eat because you had all your calories for the day! Fuck no!!!Your going to EAT whatever you feel like eating at the moment. My doctor had the nerve to tell me I should try not to gain so much so fast even though I was having twins. I told him I was going to eat when I was hungry. That's what I did! Of course my tummy isn't as flat as before I was prego but it all take time and serious effort. Ladies never compare yourselves to celebrities who have babies. It's all airbrushing b.s.! They get strech marks too. They gain just as much as us normal folks. Only difference is they are RICH and have nanies and personal chefs!

Ok, you got me there! And I agree (and have read it many times over) on how you're not really eating for two, and it should only be minimal weight gain. But 10 weeks after and looking better? Some people are just blessed a little more genetically than others.

    BTW, good for you girl!

Actually, weight loss after delivery depends a lot on whether a mommy breastfeeds or not. Making breast milk takes A LOT of calories and women who breastfeed lose weight a lot quicker.

And yes, genetics plays a huge role. Although, if you read through ACOG literature (American College of OB/GYN) you'll find that women tend to do better long term after cesarean sections rather than normal spontaneous vaginal deliveries, as long as it is no more than two deliveries. In Brazil where the population is very young and women want to look the best in their swimsuits, the majority of deliveries are elective c-sections. Food for thought

Of course when you have twins, you are going to gain more weight and stretch marks are basically unavoidable. However, there are still weight gain guidelines. Women who put on too much weight during pregnancy increase their incidence of ALL kinds of problems including gestational diabetes mellitus, pregnancy induced hypertension, and pre-eclampsia. There are all dangerous conditions both for the mother and the baby.

And while I am not saying that celebrities do not get airbrushed in photo shoots, it is DEFINITELY possible to be pregnant and give birth while limiting the amount of stretchmarks. I would be willing to bet that there are a significant number of women on this message board who have had kids, and have few or no stretch marks. It all has to do with many factors including genetics, minimizing pregnancy weight gain, and the timing of delivery. Why do you think the private insurance patients in Los Angeles want to put on 25 pounds exactly and get a c-section at 36 weeks? Why is it in image conscious Brazil's private clinics, the c-section rate is 75%? And yes, I believe that many celebrities who depends on their bodies for their livelihood DO take measures to gain an appropriate amount of weight. My wife was just showing me a picture of Heidi Klum in US Weekly a little while back. She is 3rd trimester and other than a little tummy, she looks basically the same as before. If that is chalked up to a personal chef and dietician, then good for her.

If you have time, read up on the current controversy of elective primary cesarean sections. Believe it or not, in a decade there may be more cesarean births than vaginal births in America.

First of all, babies take what they need from the food the mother eats and the mother gets the rest.

I personally had a c-section because my and my child's life was in danger. I was on bedrest the majority of my pregnancy (including a weeklong stint in the hospital) and didn't gain any weight until I was 7 months. I have NO stretch marks due to good genetics and cocoa butter. I live in Los Angeles and what goes on here is bullsh*t.

As far as men talking about pregnancy, when they can shoot something the size of a cantaloupe out of their penis, then I'll listen, doctor or not...

I did have a c-section and had to force myself to recover quickly because my baby had to stay in the NICU for two weeks (she's fine, now). I can say other than a little scar hiding well below my bikini line, there is no evidence that I've had a baby.

I also used a hospital grade pump to express my milk for her for the first 2 months. She was so little she couldn't latch on to my nips. I was getting about 32 ounces a day. I think this helped with the rapid weight loss. They say lactating can burn 500-800 calories a day, that in addition to a healthy diet and exercise will melt the fat away.

Now, I just have to get my strength back in my tummy. I HATE crunches!
