Default very good news from New Orleans ...

Despite the vast majority of news coverage focused on New Orleans versus MS and AL, and despite the initial outcries of '10,000 casualties' from Louisiana officials screaming for more federal help, at this point it appears that the official Katrina casualties now number 197 in La, 211 in Ms, 7 in Fl . While the loss of life is tragic under any circumstances, it would appear that the initial dire predictions about 10,000 New Orleans casualties was way off the mark. For some reason. mainstream US media is not reporting much on actual numbers of Katrina casualties, but some news sources from outside the USA are reporting on the issue ...

I wouldn't get too optimistic about this good news until they start collecting the bodies in earnest.... did you see Democracy Now this morning? They were showing people pleading with the authorities to remove a dead body that has been laying in the street in one unflooded neighborhood since the day of the storm.

The "official" body counts only represent the bodies that have been "processed" by the morgues. Not those who may have been collected or the many that haven't been.

I don't think it'll be 10,000 people either, but there's still a ways to go until the final death toll is figured out. The sad thing is, we'll probably never know the actual number of people who died.

These are the ones that have been positively identified as dead...
BUT I think it is true that the numbers are going to be lower than anticipated, if only becaus of the many people that have been identified because they ARE alive.

Hmm, that is interesting because I have been hearing those numbers from all the mainstream media several times a day.

over 270 and counting as of today.

Sadly , there will be many deaths to come due to disease infested water that so many were forced to swim through because the slow response of the federal government who assumed responsibility when Bush declared a federal disaster on Aug. 29th 2005

According to DHS' own website it states that DHS "will assume primary responsibility on March 1st [2005] for ensuring that emergency response professionals are prepared for any situation. This will entail providing a coordinated, comprehensive federal response to any large-scale crisis and mounting a swift and effective recovery effort."
