    Default Ibs

    Anyone here with IBS? I've gotten it in light off and on bouts since I was little, but it's back with such a vengeance lately. Obviously it's embarrassing and inconceivable to be battling digestive mutiny at work (gas, cramps, diarrhea followed by constipation and then back again- ack! HELL!)...but when my stomach is this irritated, all I can eat safely (ie- when I know I have to be somewhere like work or school) is white rice, bananas, applesauce, dry toast, soymilk, oatmeal, potatoes...anything with high fat, dairy, caffeine, or insoluble fibre sends me off the edge. It sucks unbelievably. Usually it goes away after a week or so and I can slowly work in normal food again (obviously everything with insoluble fibre is healthy, but impossible for me to digest when IBS-y)- but it's been a month and still no dice. Every time I have dairy I get sick again, or a salad. Dammit. My doc said to ride it out, but really didn't have much else to say. Any advice? Any fellow sufferers? I know it's the stress of just having started dancing, going back to school, AND getting a new apartment that is contributing to the endless tummy ache (so much stress that I got the second cold sore of my whole life- last one was before high school grad exams three years ago). This sucks!

    Aww. My stomach is messed up frequently from traveler's tummy....I know the feeling of being frightened by the actions of the digestive system.
    I drink a lot of tea to keep the system "busy" and many natural herbs are stomach toners. Chamomile, ginger root, cinnamon, cloves....many more are available, depending on your tastes.
    Are you lactose intolerant? If so, just cut the milk out alltogether....or try goat's milk (the milk protein is smaller than cow's milk)

    I have the same prob since I work out of town every weekend... not fun when I get home.
    I usually just eat a lot of soups, lots and lots of fluids and try to take it easy. I stay away from excercise for the first days or so, just so my body doesn't feel like it's getting attacked.
    Please don't lick me, it tickles..

    hey ladies,
    ok so i was really having bad stomach problems about a month ago. cramps, gas, constipation, no fun I had recently bagun to eat a large amount of soy products and other "low calorie" foods. I went to the bookstore that day and picked up a book on a raw food detox diet. The jisst of this diet is to up your intake of raw foods and clear all or most of the processed crap out of your life to improve your overall health, digestive track, and weight. It also deals with when and in what order you eat certain types of foods. You should look into it on your own if interested, but here are some examples:

    breakfast;
    ONLY lots and lots of fruit all morning until about noon

    lunch;
    whole grain avacodo and vegetable sandwich with dijon mustard
    side salad with minimal dressing (organic oil & vinigar)

    snack;
    celery sticks and raw almonds, other veggies as desired

    dinner;
    grilled fish with lots of steamed veggies and salad

    dessert;
    organic dark 70% chocolate bar

    basically the diet is based on the science of your body and the types of digestive acids that you use to digest certain types of foods. Your body uses different stomach acids tto break up carbs than it does to break up proteins. for this reason, the two should never be consumed together. it makes it harder for your body to properly digest.

    also, before you continue to drink soy milk of any kind,do a little bit of research on soy products and the possible effects on the body. i was passing blood through my stool because of the harshness of the soy products i was eating. the soy milk could be your problem.

    sorry this post is so long, but the diet has helped me so much over the past month i just thought that i should share it with you guys since you have the some of the same problems i was having

    I have ulcerative colitis, a form of IBD (irritable bowel disease). My flares are almost always stress induced. I take medicine three times a day to try to keep it in remission.

    When I have a flare-up, my colon fills with bleeding ulcers and I am unable to digest anything (I usually need blood transfusions when this happens). I have to go on a clear liquid diet for a week or so, and if that doesnt start to help, a hospital stay is required....yay.

    Anyhow, I find that certain foods do cause digestive upset for me, they include (but are not limited to)
    -dairy
    -caffeine
    -fibrous vegetables
    -anything acidic (OJ, spaghetti sauce)
    -chocolate (BOOO!)
    -SPLENDA - I cannot handle this sweetener at all. I check the label of everything for it (AKA sucralose)
    -white sugars and flours (simple carbs like this feed bad intestinal bacteria that is often linked to IBD and IBS flares)

    Not sure if any of this is relevant - IBS is not quite as severe as IBD, but let me tell you, I can empathize with your pain! Hang in there

    Miss Chevious is right- I have lost a lot of weight by only eating fruit in the morning (people would ask me how I was supposed to have energy from just that...turns out it was the right idea.)
    I'm allergic to soy now so I happily avoid it. It is a filler product in a lot of foods.

    tampadancer- can you eat figs, raisins & dates? I have read these are "healing" fruits for digestion. They're wonderful & very versatile. There's also a natural version of sucralose called stevia, available at health food stores.

    My dad was having severe health problems from eating bad food, but he cleaned up his diet and now he looks and feels great. It must be really frustrating to suffer from the above ailments, but don't lose hope.

    I also have IBS due to not having a gall bladder anymore. But I just try to deal with it as best as I can. I avoid foods that give me the really bad runs (chinese food, greasy foods, etc..) and I drink tons of water.

    That might not work for everyone, but I do know that my Dr. wanted me to go on some med that would help but I refused. (I don't want to be dependant on any meds if I can help it.) You might want to ask your Dr. if it would help you though.

    Sad Re: Ibs

    How does a doctor test you to see if you have ibs? I get diarrhea alot and it seems the more I stress out about getting it the worse it is. I take alot of Immodium my boyfriend says we should buy stock in it. One time we were driving from Kentucky to Missouri and he had to stop every 5 minutes so I could go to the bathroom. Nothings scarier than being trapped in a truck on the hiway when you're about to poop your pants.So I now I get anxiety about traveling and that makes it worse. I'm also very careful about what I eat on the days I have to work I practically starve myself. I know it is not healthy.I heard of something called Digestive Advantage?? I'm not sure if it works. If anyone else has suggestions please post ,this really effects my daily life.

    My doctor diagnosed me based on symptoms, past history, family history, etc. She didn't need to do any tests, but she knows me well from other tests (I've also been anemic in the past, have polycystic ovarian disorder, ahha, lots of fun stuff). It's stress related for me, and affects many young women, often becoming less severe as you get older...not to be confused with IBD, which is more serious and chronic...or Crohn's, which is apparently worse still. I dunno. See a doctor or a dietician would be my advice.

    Oh sweetie, I feel your pain..LITERALLY! I have IBS as well...but I hadn't had any problems with it for YEARS until the last few months. It flared back up and I've been dealing with it on a daily basis now. It's AWFUL when I'm at work....and I have to run to the DJ booth and tell him to skip me until I come out of the bathroom. YUCK! Thank God for baby wipes.

    And then the other end of the spectrum when I'm battling the constipation and I'm so bloated and full of shit (LOL!) that I have a noticeable weight gain, and I feel like a fat cow on stage.

    It's stress related for me, I'm sure. Also diet related, as it's SO hard to eat a really good balanced diet with my schedule. So I quit eating out and have started trying to cook stuff and take it into work to reheat...or eating Healthy Choice dinners or something (but then there's the sodium).....IBS....it's not the best thing to deal with in this industry, that's for sure.
