    Default counterfeit $$$

Has anyone been given counterfeit money? I was a couple of years ago. Of course I didn't notice until the end of the night. It's so dark in the club that you can't tell! How do you check your money for authenticity without being rude in front of the customer?

    20s....I just feel
50s and 100s I hold up to the light, especially if I'm giving them change. It's common policy to check money now, so most people understand.

Blacklights are the best way to spot phony bills in a darkened room. If your club doesn't have blacklights, consider getting a blacklight pen.

The security strip inside the bills should glow a certain color depending on the denomination.

if you were going to carry a pen around, wouldn't it be better to be a money pen?

You can usually feel the difference between the real money and the fake. Fake money is either too thick or too thin...rips really easily...or the ink smudges. I also NEVER made change from my garter. I always took the bills up to the bar for two reasons: 1) if it's a "good" fake and accepted, it's in the batenders drawer...2) the bartender always has the "fake spot" pens. You won't get "screwed" that way.

You mean the invisible ink pens that turn dark on a counterfeit bill?

Those will usually work, but I've heard they are not 100% effective. I've actually heard of cases where they can turn up false positives, such as on prefectly good bills that have been run through the laundry.

That happened to me a few weeks ago... Luckily it was on stage so it was sooooooooo obvious. It was the only thing glowing bright white in my garter. What an idiot!!!! I just took it out crumpled it up and threw it on the floor, right as he was walking away from the stage.

That was the only time but you can tell the difference in the way $$$ feels.

When I was recently in the US, I got quite a few $1 bills that glowed white under blacklights (like, probably 5 a night). They were all accepted at the bank (in the states)- I was told they glowed because they'd been run through the wash.

Ok, on the new bills. Take your fingernail and scratch on the face part of the bill.

There are ridges on the money. Usually where the president is wearing his suit. That is how you can tell a real/fake.

Im always checking...

Real $$$ usually have a wax feel and an interior strip when held up to the light. Watermarks are also seen when slightly tilted toward the light. If it feels paper thin I would observe it.

I read under another thread that counterfeit money glows under the blacklight. Now somebody is sayin that real money glows under blacklight too if it has been washed. What the hell. So then I guess the number one thing we should go off of is the feel of the money?

I'm sure the veterans handle money all the time, so they would know the difference in feel. But what about the new girls? Or is it real obvious.

Yes, I worry about fake money too. I try not to take bills over a twenty because of this, and the bar will exchange it for smaller bills. As long as they look normal at first glance most businesses I go to take twenties with out checking. Most of the time I am more worried about fake or expired funny money.

As far as I know, Levi Strauss Jeans company is still selling scrap cotton to the US Mint to make currency with....So, in good light, check the bills for the telltale little red & blue threads pressed into the bill. (This tip is included on the above link Deogol provided.)
Also, there is a little thread on the end of higher value bills with the $ worth of the bill printed on it. Takes good eyes to see these things, but it's worth looking for.....

Australian money is plastic and almost 100% non-counterfeitable.

But yes, American money washed glows in blacklight.

The easiest way to see if a bill is fake is with the water mark. The water mark will always match the picture of the face on the bill.
