Default Truly temporary red hair dye?

It has been, like, three years since I last dyed my hair and I was thinking of mixing it up a little. My preference would be to go red for fun, but I don't want the commitment of a permanent dye. Do any of you have experience with the temporaries out there? I want something that really will be gone in two or three weeks so in case I don't like it I'm not screwed and my hair isn't damaged.

what color is your hair now susan? what kind of red are you looking for? redken shades e.Q. is good, there are also products you can buy at sally's or other beuaty supply stores like clairol's colorgloss i think it's called. they also have these little packets of stuff that can be semi-permanant or permanant depending on how long you leave it in.
also, if you want it to last a few weeks you want semi-permanent. temporary lasts only until you wash your hair again
Oh, I musta took a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

My hair is brown. I'm looking for an auburn shade. I don't want to use anything with peroxide or ammonia in it.

yes ok. well i like the ones i mentioned before. can you get professional color and stuff (redken, matrix, schwartzkopf (sp????)etc)? if so the shades e.q. is used a lot. if not then i suggest the Lites 'n Brites packets at sally's or the clairol colorgloss. they last a little while but not too much. the packet isnt mixed with anything, but the colorglosses you have to buy a seperate developer but it is ammonia/peroxide free or very little.

edit---these things only add a wash of color over your existing color, they wont lighten it. the color will show mostly in light, more subtle other times.

Some are gone in a week, some are gone in one wash. there is a wide variety of colors, including deep, shocking, and auburn-ish red. if you decide to get it, ask the salesperson for instructions for it, which we keep behined the registers. or you can go to

I'm blonde, and every red dye I've tried, no matter how temporary the box said it was, stuck to my hair permanently in a kind of pink shade. Curse of the blonde.

Manic Panic, in my experience, is far from temporary, a real mess to deal with, and not available in colors one encounters in nature.

I'm not blonde so I'm not worried about it leaving a "stain."

I'm going to leave this one to the salon, I guess, and ask my stylist what she thinks.
