    Quitting smoking

I am so sick of myself! I have been trying to quit smoking for 6 months. I did not even smoke when I went back to work a year ago (having quit when I was home with my son), but being around other smokers all the time is a bitch!

I have tried the patches and a holistic pill, neither of which does me any good!

For those of you who have manaed to quit smoking while working, how did you do it????

The thing that worked best for me was to occupy myself. Being at work was hard b/c of drinking and everyone else smoking. When I felt like I needed a cigarrette, I would stop and tell myself to wait two more songs. In that two songs I would try to find a lap dance to occupy myself. Or I would put it off until I went on stage again and then smoke after. Cold turkey is a bad idea, you have to learn to find something else to take up that time. * Something else*If you dont like lemons, everytime you want to smoke, bite into a lemon, eventually, when you think of smoking, you will think of lemons and the sour and give it up. Good luck! i know how frustrating this can be!

I quit smoking for two years, and started again last year. I am trying to quit again right now too. I have not smoked in two weeks. However, I am going to go back to work in a club in a couple of weeks and I am worried that I won't be able to resist the temptation. Good luck to you, I know how hard it can be.

cold turkey...otherwise you're relying on something else to magically take the cravings away, which wont happen. I had a nicorette inhaler on hand, just in case, but never used it.
Granted, I took 6 weeks off work to quit. I don't know if i'd have been able to otherwise...habit is strong. Maybe part of it is realizing that you are wanting a cig from force of habit?

also, you have to quit drinking. I haven't had any alcohol since I quit smoking, and probably won't until i hit the 1 year mark at least (at 10 months now).

I quit with the gum for over a year, and it worked for me. Although it wasn't really my idea to quit at the time, and when I saw the opportunity to start again, I did. What can I say other than, I just love to smoke.

My best guy friend quit with the patch and has been clean since May except for 1 smoke when he did not get a job after going through a very long interview process (10 of them to be precise).

My plant manager quit with zyban, after trying many other ways. Apparently when you are on this tobacco smoke makes you sick to your stomach, and leaves a permanent disdain for it, so it is probably not good for a dancer unless your club is smoke free.

There is no one good way. You just have to find out what works for you, and be committed to it.

It took a doctor's suspicions of a heart murmur to make me quit. I used zyban for a week to curb cravings but what really helped was the realization that my addiction really could kill me. Everytime I thought about taking a drag off a co-workers smoke I thought about the EKG machine being taped to my chest. Turns out I'm fine, but that was a good dose of reality for me.

Now I just think smoking looks so trailer trash too. I used to enjoy the act of smoking but now it's almost repulsive to watch someone, especially a woman, smoke. I apologize if this offends anyone but that's how I had to change my way of thinking in order quit.

I didn't really have a problem with drinking while quitting but I can see how that would be an obstacle.

I registered for a hypnosis session October 11th. The bartenders husband, a lifelong smoker who desperately wanted to quit but couldn't, had good luck with one. He has been of cigarettes for like 12 years or something.

In the meantine, I will be limiteting the damage I do by following Kharisma's advice. Also, Mia, I used to work in a hospital, in the emergency room. We used to see paitents with strokes, cardiac arrests, respiratory diseases all the time, then all run outside and have a smoke. I will start thinking about THAT wehn I want a cig!

    Thanks fo rthe support!

Good luck Colleen! I just quit about....9 months ago. I don't know about the smoking laws in Chicago, but in CA people aren't allowed to smoke in the bar, so I just wouldn't go into the break room if someone was smoking, or outside where the other smokers were.

I like the lemon idea someone mentioned....I used a rubber band around my wrist (not the kind for hair, but the acutal rubber ones) and whenever I had a craving I would use it to snap myself really hard. I also used it to stop saying "like" all the time....worked well for me, on both occassions.

I've tried everything... I've been smoking for 7 yrs now. I tried hypnosis (I was the only one in the room who failed ) i've tried the patch...but i hate that one and the gum because you still have nicotine in you. Cold Turkey is the best.
So there was a class offered to quit smoking and i took it. I quit for 3 months!! the longest ever. And work wasn't the hard part as long as you stayed busy......the problem was when i got home and had nothing to do and my SO was still smoking.
But I'm taking this class again. And they give you a small dose of Zyban. I never had any bad side affects....stomache ache or anything, they give you a really small dose. not how much they give patients that are depressed. When i quit cold turkey the zyban acts like that little extra bit of mental will power to just say no to that one cig. And through this class i'm learning that it's not the nicotine you miss after awhile it'd your habits. The nicotine will be out of your body in 48 hours. The HABIT of smoking will take a whole year to break. just trying to find another habit to replace the usual habit you have.....like for me i had to break smoking in the car.. and then i had to stop having that morning cig. i had to find something to replace what i normally filled with a smoke.
Like they said the cigarette is the cure all for everything. If you're sad you have a smoke. If you're happy and social you have a smoke. If you're tired you smoke to wake you up. If you're wired you have a smoke to bring you down. It sucks. Trying to take smoking out of so many parts of your life and days habits.

GOod luck though. The only thing that's helped me is the Zyban.

My husband and I are trying the inhalers... not only does it give you the nicotine but, it's provides your oral fixation relief as well.

Also it's nice if you have a job where you can't smoke... it got me through a lengthy interview, cool as a cucumber.

It's called Smoking Cessation. I get it through the Military. It's one of the classes they offer. I just finished my last class yesterday(3 total). and it's been 2 weeks and i haven't even bummed a drag or anything!!!! And i stopped taking the zyban after just 2 weeks. That'a all i needed last time to help me quit. It just helps me get through those first few days.

From what i found on the internet....most hospitals offer a class like this too.
I wouldn't beable to tell you how much it would cost Or if insurance would help pay. I think what they said at the class was something like $3000 per person for the medication....BUT like i said i refused the patches (which are really expensive) and they gave me a month supply with a refill of Zyban but i only needed 2 weeks worth.......

I don't know if maybe you know someone in the military who could help you out??? It's really a worth while program. I hope you can find one like it.

And with the Zyban.....The reason i took it for 2 weeks is because they want you to smoke for one week while you are taking the pills......Something to do with the pills needing to recognize the nicotine in your system......and then the 2nd week is just to help with the will power.

Whilst I may be a "never smoker", I have always had friends who are/were smokers and constantly trying to quit. Can I say one thing that I noticed between all the ones who quit and quit successfully: They had SUPPORT.

Support is key to success... one friend found that support on the internet (online groups), another found it with real people... and so on. Connect yourself with people who will be supportive and motivational to you.

You can try everything and it will fail if you don't have that support.

My mom quit in her late 50's after smoking since she was 19. She didn't work in a club with other smokers but she still had a lot of trouble quitting. I think one thing that really helped was she made up her mind she had to do it. She had health problems and her doctor told her it would kill her, and pretty soon too, if she didn't stop. But the way she quit was she counted how many cigarettes she smoked each day. Then she'd cut back by one, then another one, until she was down to just one cigarette a day. She always knew she could smoke so she had that to look forward to. When she finally gave up the last one she did it on vacation so she would be in a totally different environment and her usual routines would be changed. It worked. She hasn't had a cigarette in a few years.

I am going to try that, cutting down by one per day until the hypnosis next week. I already went down from regular menthol 100's to ultra-light shorts, which makes it a lot harder to get as much niccotine anyway. I am also starting the detox diet tomorrow. It lasts for 2 weeks, so I will be quitting right in the middle of it. My next pack will be the non-menthol ultra lights; THAT ought to help reduce the urge! I hate non-menthols.

I am really excited about finally quitting. I am getting so fed up with all the time and money I waste, plus it is just getting to be a nuscience. The damn things rule my life.

The thing I hate most is waking up and needing one, and being all crabby and bitchy until I get it. Also the fact that I have to plan on stopping to buy them, planning not to run out at work or over the weekend, and so on.

I am becomming more aware of the nasty taste they leave in my mouth and the fact that after I smoke, I actaually fel a little worse for a while.

You ladies have been very supportive, and I appreciate that. Thank you so much!

That's so true how smoking controls you and everything you do. Also the support is true..... my hubby finally decided to quit too. So we quit at the same time. Last time i quit for 3 months but started again because he was still smoking. This time we're both supporting each other.

Another thing they told us at the class was to remember all the negative things we hate about smoking whenever we get an urge..........such as how expensive it was, or how you had to have one in the morning even though your lungs burned and your nose was all stuffed up...... so that you sill stop yourself from having just one more smoke.

But that concept for me would never work. Because i know that when i quit and had an urge for a smoke, there was no way i was going to be able to talk myself out of it. I knew i could come up any excuse no matter what to just have one, because when you quit that urge is strong!! really strong. And you don't care anymore how much you use to spend, or how controling it was. Who cares about that when all you're going to do is have one little drag. It won't cost you a dime......blah blah blah....and so forth until i've successfully Failed at quiting

Just one smoke won't hurt.......i haven't had one in a week.......so if i just take a drag off this one i'll be fine. NOOOOo No no no. Soooooo......instead i don't think about smoking at all when i have an urge. As soon as i think of smoking....i stop!!!! That's it! NO more discussion in my head. no more trying to convince myself not to take that drag. NO EXCUSES. I won't even give myself the chance to think up excuses (because i know i can) Nothing. I just have to let it go and be done with smoking forever and stop thinking about it. That is the whole reason i quit. Right??!!!

SO that's it when you get an urge. Stop right there and let that be your last thought about smokes. Because it's not part of your life anymore. You're done with smoking. Just let it go.

yes, that's a good one... I may have mentioned this already, but when I quit I printed out ugly pictures of people smoking, and pictures of smoking-related wrinkling. I carried them around and looked at them when I had an urge. lol, trust vanity to give me a kick in the pants! But it worked-

I've heard from a friend that cold turkey is the only way. I can't comment personally, having never smoked cigarettes, but I can say that I know a bit about drugs and addiction mechanisms in general, and I know that there are drugs which are easier to quit by cutting down (caffeine for example) and others that are easier cold turkey (heroin for example) so I'm willing to believe that nicotine may be one of the easier-cold-turkey ones.
