    Default A lock box

I think I saw a similar thread on this topic but couldnt find it.

Im thinking of getting a lock box until I make my deposits into the bank. Something heavy I guess so no one can just pick it up and leave with it or even comes with something bolted to the floor.

Do you guys have any recommendations?

    TM,
You can buy a small safe at a good hardware store which would take a half dozen guys and a moving van to move, They do not cost much, but delivery is extra. Probelm is all the neighbors are gonna wonder what you have which is so valueable. A better option is stealth. Make it too hard to find and a pain to open and make sure no one suspects you have anything worth going to the trouble to steal. This is the old "The other guys car is more interesting" approach. Just go to the bank once a week, tell no one you keep cash, and the guy with the $1000 stereo is a more attractive target.

Make sure ther is no wasy way to get in in the first place (like an AC they can just push in). the key is not weight if they find it, but not having them find it, nor want to break in and look around.

there was a thread about safes on here and 242_fair made a really good point about safes when she said someoone she knew got robbed at gunpoint because they knew she had a safe.

Safes are like screaming to the world that there is something really valuable in there....and it's worth stealing. Same for Louis Vuitton luggage

I had a friend who had a safe lowered into her concrete floor and concrete poured around it to seal it in, and then had a "fake floor" covering it so you couldn't see it unless you knew exactly where it was. She doesn't report hardly any income, and so she would just stash all of her money in there and only deposit into the bank enough to pay her bills and have some money left in the account.

I don't know HOW the guy knew...but he and a friend robbed her of the $10,000 that she had in the safe. And, she never reported it because then she would have to explain where she got the money from and then the IRS would find out that she never reported that money. Just a lose-lose situation for her.

Safes are great if you are going to store valuables. However, storing money in there would not, IMHO, be a good idea. Simply because you cannot insure the money is safe. The only things I have in my safe box at the bank are the appraisals for my jewelry, my homeowners insurance, my title (for car, house, etc) and original birth certificates.

Could you just buy one of those little fireproof strong boxes and hide it real good ? I have one of those rob you at gunpoint safes and I have had no problem yet . Is there a bank close to work you can just make an envelope deposit when you start to feel uncomfortable .

I have had to frequently stash cash (travel, not able to bank) and I would split it up, wrap it in plastic and stash it in places no one would think to look, or under furniture, etc.....I had a lockbox but it got lost when I moved home from the Carribean.
Yeah, don't tell people about your job. I can think of a few of my neighbors who would rob me in a second if they thought I had cash in the house.

I got a small fire proof safe from Walmart a couple yrs ago more for important documents but now that I'm back to dancing its perfect for between the bank trips. I always keep a couple twentys in my tampon box just in case I need some quick cash.... I won't keep more than $1000 in my safe at any given time though.

safety deposit box at a bank usually starts at around 50/yr for a small one, up to 150/yr for a large one.

unless you're prepared to permanently install a 'serious' safe, here are some clever alternatives to stash cash between bank runs ...

I use a 'water bottle' safe in hotel rooms while on road trips, stashed in an opened 'six pack' of real water bottles. Hotel staff will never bother with water bottles since they usually already have 100 of them on their service cart to restock rooms. The 'hair spray can' safe is also good every place except dressing rooms LOL. Don't try the 'beer can' safe though, cuz somebody will nab it thinking it's really a beer.

At home I installed one of these 'serious' wall safes in a place one wouldn't normally expect. The main reason I got the 'serious' wall safe was for the 1 hour fire rating to protect stock certificates & documents as well as cash.

I also have an el-cheapo floor safe in my bedroom, in relatively plain view and not bolted down, which I don't keep any truly valuable papers in, and which I only keep $200 or so in, for the express purpose of providing easy 'bait' for any would-be burglars and ripoff artists. I figure that way if anybody does get any ideas, they can waste their time for $200 and a $59 WalMart safe. If God forbid anybody attempts to force me to open the safe at gunpoint, wow I'll open it for them and let them take the $200, while keeping my mouth shut about the existance of a second much better hidden wall safe holding the real valuables.

As was already pointed out, it's never a good idea to advertise the fact that you have/earn lots of cash. As was also pointed out, if the cash you plan to stash in your safe doesn't have a matching official IRS history, you'll find yourself doubly vulnerable to a ripoff which you can't easily report to the police. 'Honest officer I earned the $10,000 that was stolen from my safe fair and square, even though I didn'f file an income tax return last year"!

PS Venus, I'll bet you that the people who ripped off your friend were the same people that installed the safe for her ! NEVER, EVER, EVER buy a safe locally or have anybody local do an installation - it's a no-brainer that anybody buying and/or installing a 'serious' safe plans to put something 'serious' inside it. If you're going to get yourself a 'serious' safe, order it on the net from a store 10 states away and install it yourself !!!!!

Melonie has a REALLY good point about a decoy safe, maybe with a table cloth over enough to not make it too obvious. The enemy of every burglar is time, and time wasted on a decoy is reduces time looking for the real Mccoy. $20 under the mattress is also a time waster unless you have a maid service. Anything that makes them obvious if they remove it is good too.

If you own your own place a burglar alarm works well if its existence is obvious. No burglar knows they have 100% of the system set and may just be avoided. Some landlords like them as a selling point and a woman alone always has a personal safety excuse that is compelling to anyone who asks. Just say it was "Dad's idea".

Thanks so much everyone. I have some great things to think about. Thanks Melonie about buying the safe online. I def. dont want to get ripped off.

I try to look as poor as possible to people outside and incognito. Maybe Ill just stash it in various places around the house? The non-obvious ideas are great as well. I just dont like going to the bank every other day.

Im looking to live in a semi-decent area at least probably no la jolla but then again theft can happen anywhere.

I actually opened up accounts at several banks. One on my way home from work. One in the town I danced in a lot. One for my savings CD's. Another where my car loan is. That way I can put money in various places without worrying that I have a large amount at home.
I also have had to get money to get a friend out of jail and been confronted with my banks daily limit on withdraws, so that is why I initially started more accounts.
I NEVER keep more than $500 on me or in my house.
If you think a lockbox is a good idea, do it, but only keep $100 in it. I found that when I had more in mine I spent it when I got bored. Best to have money out of sight (out of mind) so you resist the urge to indulge your self just because you can.
Go for a safe deposit box and once a week go in and put a minimum of $50 for every day you worked. WATCH, you'll see how fast your money adds up when its not in your hand.

Thank you so much for the link, I just ordered a couple of the candles, when I work 4 days straight I don't always have time to make it to the bank.

That is a good idea. I read in our local paper about a man getting robbed but he had cash stashed in different places, so when he was asked for the money he removed it from his safe place and gave it up. The robber didn't know he had ten safe places, lol.

No, they didn't install it. One of the guys was the ex of a friend of a friend of a friend. Very far removed from the circle but somehow found out and made their move.
