wrath of god issues aside, I'm very concerned that this latest hurricane will plow into Texas, damaging even more oil and gas rigs. If it does we'll probably wind up with $4 a gallon gasoline instead of $3.

Actually, it's the refineries we all need to worry about. Starting north of Galveston, all the way up the bay to Baytown...it's almost one big refinery and chemical plant.

Those poor people... well, its not good news but at least most are already evacuated and gone so they wont be there for this one... and HOPEFULLY those who have gone back will leave...and those that stayed will have learned from Katrina and leave...

Anyone know what Catagory Storm its supposed to be when it hits? Ive been hearing about Ophelia but not Rita...

It sure didn't take long to bump up the prices around here. This morning it was 2.69 a gallon - by the drive home they were 2.77 and even 2.89 at one place!

Deogol..Its 3.29 here... that's for super, cheapest stuff is 2.98

I have family in Galveston.. I'm hoping that this one isn't as bad as Katrina... this whole situation has just been awful, I feel so badly for everyone and hope that this one is much milder.....if there is such a thing...

    And no, cant' stop God.

All the major oil stuff is around the port of Houston (north/west side). I worry if we take serious damage they might start using chemicals to dissipate a hurricane rather than deal with effects of it.

All the hotels around me are booked! There are only 60 rooms left in Waco (as of 5:00 PM 9/20). I guess people are heeding the evactuation warning. Good thing, too...

....as reported live a few minutes ago during the Galveston City council meeting.

Zone A along the coast line(Kemah,Texas City too). Manditory evacuation 6am tomorrow(wednesday).
Zone B mandatory on thursday which includes Dickinson where Heartbreakers is at.
Zone C which is League City and Friendswood is mandatory on Friday i think.

NASA is about 5 miles north of League City which is about 20 miles from the bay.

Oil & refineries aside, I'm happy to see people are heeding the evacuation warnings. My BF has family along the coast and they're skipping town. This is really scary...and sad. I just hope that if assistance is warranted, local officials on up to fed have learned from the mistakes of the NOLA/Biloxi fiasco and adjust accordingly.

The storm prediction models this morning show the eye wobbling directly on or slightly east of Houston/Galveston with two days to go. The eye continues to drift east. Jefferson County east of Houston now has mandatory evacuation(Beaumont,PortAuthor). Alot of people from Houston probably were heading to Beaumont yesterday so now everyone there has to leave including NOLA people. Roads out of Houston are packed and crawling all night. Takes 10 or more hours to get out of the gridlock. Wind predictions are at 75-120 mph in Houston depending on which side of the eye you are on. Galveston island is predicted to flood and look like NOLA. NASA is on the edge of the flood surge map. Houston does not have mandatory evacuation. The storm surge areas south/east of Houston are the main focus. The small tornados that may be spawned are my real concern. My beer is stocked up, i'm ready, bible in hand.

I can't believe another one is coming....crazy....but good to see the people evacuating. On the news this morning they showed hospitals that were taking the most seriously ill patients by helicopter, ambulance and bus to other facilities. The one woman they interviewed said they had an evacuation plan and it appears to be working fairly well. As far as New Orleans.....I really feel alot of what happened was not being as prepared as they should have been. Horrible way to learn a lesson...but thank god with Rita people seem to be getting out.
Everyone in the gulf please stay safe.

I'm hearing from people I know around town that they are giving up on evacuation for now because the traffic is just so bad. One case of people headed for Austin spent 8 hours trying to get out, and finally gave up and made the less than 1 hour trip back home. I'm still getting things squared away at work, So I might not be leaving.

It is swinging dramatically up towards east Texas, west LA. Wouldnt that be some $#!+ if we don't get hurricaine force winds in between Houston/Galveston.

Next time I'm leaving someone else in charge and going to Vegas.

If it makes landfall east of Galveston, that will be somewhat good news for that area. But I now see many of the forecast models are expecting this thing to actually stall over East Texas or the Texas Gulf Coast after it makes landfall and they're predicting 1-2 feet of rain should this happen. My fear is that this thing could reak a lot more flooding havoc several miles inland than some people may be considering.

Actually there is a 'conspiracy theory' that the Russians as well as the US have developed atmospheric high frequency beam technology which can in fact disrupt weather ...

Based on the principles in the underlying patents, the admitted existance of a huge facility in Alaska (with the even higher probability of similar facilities in Russia) etc. , there would appear to be more to this than pure speculation.
