    Default The War on Porn

The FBI is joining the Bush administration's War on Porn. And it's looking for a few good agents.

The new squad will divert eight agents, a supervisor and assorted support staff to gather evidence against "manufacturers and purveyors" of pornography -- not the kind exploiting children, but the kind that depicts, and is marketed to, consenting adults.

Just what we need - more BS positions for our tax dollars to go... wonderful...

I love this line - "I guess this means we've won the war on terror," said one exasperated FBI agent, speaking on the condition of anonymity because poking fun at headquarters is not regarded as career-enhancing. "We must not need any more resources for espionage."

SO TRUE... Give me a BREAK!

Gotta get rid of Bush. Hopefully the bad press he's gotten lately will bring those who voted for him to their senses, and the Christian Conservative Republicans won't be reelected.

Eh...this is just a means of placating some political constituencies.

No serious effort is going to be exerted by the FBI in this regard; they just have a lot of other things to do that are more important--reflected by the fact that a whopping ten agents will be placed on this matter.

You have to get rid of ALL of them - the blues AND the reds.

We seriously need some new ideas in this country.

The hurricanes, the deficits, the taxes - examples of a government with no fucking clue about what it is doing ... mark my words - this country has to fall pretty far before something substantial is going to happen.

Drastic times call for drastic measures

I would be willing to willing to become an “undercover” agent and conduct investigations, frisk the enemy what ever is needed. All for my country.

It’s nice to know that we have hunger, healthcare and joblessness all taken care of and can now focus our tax dollars and time on this…

I am disappointed in the Democratic party as well. I just hate the Republican party's focus on religion and big business profits at the expense of the working people. I agree that the entire political process and legal system of this country needs revamping, especially to abolish campaign contributions, and lobbyists.

    From the Washington Post article:

"Based on a review of past successful cases in a variety of jurisdictions," the memo said, the best odds of conviction come with pornography that "includes bestiality, urination, defecation, as well as sadistic and masochistic behavior." No word on the universe of other kinks that helps make porn a multibillion-dollar industry.

So... they should send nine of the 10 agents to Russia, cuz that's where 90% of the worst Internet stuff is coming from.

I've got a great way to defeat Christian neo-cons in the Republican Party. Join the Republican Party.

That way you can pick off far right candidates at the primary level. Should you fail there, threaten vocally that you are going to cross party lines and vote for the Democratic candidate in the general election. Then do it. This would cut the religious right's power considerably.

The reason religious zealotry appears to be on the increase in this country isn't because the country is growing more socially conservative, its because the people who are socially conservative are well organized and the rest of us are not.

There are no democrat's that are Christian's? I don't think being a Christian has anything to do with it.
Sending 10 F.B.I. agents to bring down porn is like sending 10 F.B.I. agents to bring down all the meth labs in this country. It's just not going to work!

True! Another way would be for the Christian Dems & Christian Independents to take back Christianity from the Right.

It is reaching the point where the moderates won't even play anymore in the Republican party. Within the party, there needs to be a discussion to let these people know the votes are there for them. Unfortunately, you would be labeled a liberal and drummed out with the thunder of AM radio.

It would be like trying to explain the foolishness of affirmative action nearly half a century past it's time (the sixties are nearly 45 years ago ya know) to democrats.

The problem with fighting child porn versus fighting adult porn is that finding and keeping investigators for the adult porn squad is easier.

Having worked with law enforcement some years ago in the fight against child pornography, the chief problem the FBI faced was the stress level agents had to endure during their investigations. The fact that they were seeing children exploited on a daily basis in the most inhuman and degrading ways you can imagine caused many agents to burnout. Retaining agents for such duties became an issue. However, some agencies managed to find agents who could handle the stress and who had such talent in tracking down pedophiles that they racked-up a long list of arrests and convictions. Two of the best agencies I found, on the local level, who had extremely talented agents were located in Virginia and Wisconsin. I will not specify which agencies, due to the sensitivity of their operations.

Yes, it feels great when you catch the bad guys. But, there is a tremendous amount of time involved with the investigations. Child molesters and child porn merchants are some of the most intelligent criminals Law Enforcement has to deal with, smarter than drug dealers, in fact. Plus child porn is a multi-million dollar business and the amount of money made from it gave the bad guys the edge in many cases, with access to some of the best software to elude detection by agencies without sufficient funding to counteract it. Local police and sheriffs often had no agents whose specific job was to trackdown child pornographers and molesters.

Adult porn is far more accessable, the people easier to find and there is less stress in performing the investigations than doing the same kind of work fighting child porn.

If more liberal to moderate people became Republicans (and nothing except filling out a voter registration card is stopping them), hence diluting the influence that conservatives have in that party, Republicans would have to steer their policies more to the left, now wouldn't they? If people could get over their partisan snobbery and see the strategical geniusness of this, it might actually work.

Although I have to agree with some here, a move to the left doesn't exact guarantee a persecution-free future for the adult industry. The left wing feminists I came across in academia weren't exactly any more "porn friendly" than right wing religious fundamentalists are. They simply have different motivations for wanting to shut the business down.

The RR has taken over the party, how are moderate and social liberals supposed to do anything about it?

Until an organized backlash happens against the RR, it's gonna be more of this as long as a Repub prez is elected.

The sad thing is, as reviled as Clinton was by the right, he is more a fiscal conservative than Bush can ever dream of being.

Doc I see your point and all but I couldn't bring myself to vote republican anymore than I could kill small animals for fun. Both are against my personal moral code.

I do however think the real Christians of this country have started to wake up and see the truth about rightwing politics. They are begining to see that it isn't really representative of the majority of the Christian beliefs system.

It took 20 some years for the rightwingers to hijack the faithful and sadly it will probably take that long to undo as well.

    Yeah, two words, "welfare reform."

    I can't believe a democrat did that.
