Call it a safety net for when the ride ends.
True, but there is the factor of dead space on the resume, not to mention that combined with age discrimination. Suppose, you decide to quit dancing in your 30's sometime, how are you going to explain to an employer what you have been doing for the past 10 years or so since you have been in college? Other than entry level, secreterial type jobs (unless you have a specialty degree such as nursing, etc.) I think it is going to be tough getting a decent job when you over the prime hiring age and have no real work expericence, even with a good ol' bachelors degree.

Don't get me wrong, I am VERY proud of my degree. But I get more satisfaction from knowing I have a solid education rather than considering it a safety net for a good job. The best safety net you can have is SAVING your money and investing it.

I have a BA in Sociology with a specialty in Anthropological Studies. But a 4 year in Soc, only gets you $22,500 a year as a social worker here.

I'm going back for my Master's next fall then on to my Doc after that.

This is the reason that I have 'rethought' my advice on this subject. I used to subscribe to the theory of 'dance part time and finish your degree at all costs'. However, because of the fact that most dancers have a limited 'peak earnings' like professional athletes, working part time versus working full time costs a student dancer a significant amount of lost potential income.

Also, outsourcing and other changes in economic outlook have basically rendered some degrees virtually worthless. I know several dancers who danced 2 days a week in the late 90's in order to pursue IT degrees - got their degrees 2-3 years ago - and found that they couldn't afford to quit dancing and take a job in what is left of the IT field. These girls would have been FAR ahead money wise to dance full time during their 'peak earning years' from say age 20-24, to have banked the money, and then today at age 25 quit dancing and use their savings to attend college full time and obtain a degree which is actually marketable in today's economy.

Instead, the girls in my example are now approaching age 30, are still dancing albeit with less earnings potential than 10 years ago, and can't afford to quit dancing in order to obtain a different degree which will actually land them a 'straight job' with adequate earnings potential.

I am glad i came across this thread. I am now kind of pondering over the issue of what to do after I earn my B.A this year. As I had posted,i want to go for my masters... but a part of me reaaally wants to put all my focus on dancing.
Would dancing full time from say 21-24 and then trying for my masters be a good idea?
Major wise... I do not want to study anything but Communication studies and teaching it.

Well...I'd expect some of that would have to do with whether you're planning to work in those things, or just study them, and also what your financial priorities for your communications career happen to be.

Having a master's degree isn't likely to get you a "master's-worthy" job our of the gate, particularly in that type of field and/or education. You'll need to demonstrate experience in your field, on top of the pedigrees you earn. Only way to do that is time. Taking time off of school to bank some cash may not be a bad idea if you're looking to preserve a style of living while you do your time in entry-level jobs. If you are more interested in accelerating the process of getting to the high-paying "day jobs" I would suggest cranking through school, as you'll have to do some bottom-feeding for awhile.

I have a BFA from RISD and started dancing 5 years after graduating to relieve some of the crushing debt. I've danced off and on for almost 12 years. If you had told me it would go that way in the beginning I never would have believed it but dancing has served me well.

Lotti, no, you're not the oldest one here, I'm 37. Dancing was my only job for the first 4 years, I left for a year, then returned to always use it to supplement other jobs I wanted to be doing. I've practiced yoga the entire time I've danced which I think has made a big difference in longetivity.

I'm currently working on a Master's in Occupational Therapy. Dancing has given me a little breathing room to figure out the things I really wanted to be doing in life. Another point along with Melonie's on postponing school is that as an older student you really know why you're there and you're interested and want to do the work rather than doing it only because you think you should. I would only recommend a dancer with good self discipline and something of a plan postpone school and take dancing for all it's worth.

(I didn't read this post before my last reply to you.)

What kind of work are you planning to do before teaching? You'll probably need more than a couple years at a part-time job before you'll be able to teach a subject. (Not to mention most professional positions of specialty don't come with part-time hours unless you are consulting, which also requires some experience.)

There's classroom knowledge and there's practical knowledge, of course, and most schools want some of both before they allow someone to become subject matter expert enough to impart their wares on others. And tenured teaching positions in pure theory at an academic establishment usually equal having a doctorate. Lots of profs at traditional universities have only worked in research and not in the commercial/private/military sector to refine expertise, but they're in the professional student category and often have the PhD to prove it.

Schools that take master's degrees as qualification enough to teach include (but are not limited to) community colleges and private schools. Both service professionals who are going/going back to school, and therefore demand several years of employement in the field being taught. Again, not a requirement in every case, but in the overwhelming majority of cases, practical understanding of an art or applied science will be required before someone is asked to join an institution to teach it.

If you're looking to spend some time focused on both, be ready to have to give one up for the other at some point, though that may not be a permanent decision. Perhaps an internship in the interim? Won't pay the bills, but you clearly have other marketable skills.

I just started dancing a few months ago. I have a BS in communicative disorders. I am going to school full time in Jan for my Master's in speech pathology. I wish I had danced in college instead of bartending/waitressing. I would have a lot less debt! When I fininsh my degree I plan on quitting dancing. Dancing is not my career. I truly love my day job, I have worked for 5 years. When I finish school I will be making a decent living, b/c the time I have invested. It is all what you love. I like dancing its fun and the $$$ is sooooooo good! Dancing for me is a means to an end. I wouldn't be dancing if I didn't have the passion to pay for my Master's degree. I am sorry to say this , but I disagree w/ the "wage ecomony" comments. I know people are going to be enraged at this comment, but I am passionate about it. We are selling ourselves when we dance, we sell a fantasy. I personally am not using my mind to dance, I am using my body. When I am at my professional job, I am using my mind and education, I get true fulfillment from it, I don't get that when I dance. There is no retirement $$(unless you save it), or health insurance(what happens if you get hurt, and can't dance anymore). The Real World is not a bad place to be. I would chose it over dancing if I had to make a choice. If dancing is what you love wonderful, but lets not take away from the value of an education, and working from the bottom from the top.

People see what they want to see to justify their own existence. As far as I'm concerned, strippers are among the more enlightened.
It's very wrong to look down on anyone, actually, (maybe a mass murderer, etc?) Actually, I consider myself pretty enlightened, "wage slave", TY. I'm proud to have a job, worked hard to get it. Aren't most of SC custies (that one makes $ off of) one of 'em too?

If ones dances/works other jobs/goes to school, (or not) awesome! Whatever gets bread to the table in a depression -like economy.

What is interesting: No one mentioned the risks involved not just short-term, (getting busted, raided, or the fallout w/a "psyco-bitch", as mentioned in other threads. It's hard enough to find any job (gaps in employment can be worked with, but a legal charge?)

    No, I don't dance, now, b/c of above-mentioned & other reasons

Ok im not trying to sidetrack or swap topics on this thread, because i swear to god,all these girls who have thier paper just does my heart right and makes me feel like a million bucks!!!!
i hope it makes all the ones reading this who dont have that paper blue with envy,to the point they go out and get one themselves!!!

    This thread rocks!!!!!!!

But i just gotta comment on this part of the responses...

I have worked in many clubs, some that have been raided, girls cuffed and taken away, even closing the doors on the spot for some of the really bad shit holes i been in,but one things for sure,I saw it comming everytime.

If your in a city that is fighting its adult industry,if you stay there, your taking a chance.

If you work a club where alot of extras go on,your taking a chance.

If you work a club that has alot of drugs, your taking a chance.

If you work a club thats full of gangster custies, your taking a chance.

I have worked with thousands of girls who would leave a club if any of these things were out of hand, and they never ever got busted, they didnt have the time.

If your in a club where the illegal stuff is more then the legal stuff, you need to be smart and leave.

There are alot of clubs that follow the law to the letter,at least as much as possibly controlled, and they have no problems from the law.

Those are the clubs entertainers should look for and work for,and they are out there.

I know many dont like it described as a team effort, but the people you work with are pretty dammed important,so is the clubs.
If 5 out of 7 are extra's girl, guess what, they are ALL considered extras girls.
If 5-6 are junkies, they are all looked at like junkies.
If 5-6 are rip offs, they are all rips.

You cant swim in a sewer and then complain if ya get shit on ya.

Look around you when your at work, know your surroundings,if you say to yourself"dam,if I was a cop looking for a ribbon in my jacket, would i be able to bust this place?"

If you answer yes, then you need to leave,or your taking a chance on being busted or raided.

And a bit of advice,I know alot of girls whine about clubs like the Vu,Ricks,Papermoon,Cheeta's,etc,CHAIN clubs dont get raided often, its usually the mom and pop places and the dives, not the top gentlemens clubs.

In the near 3 years we have been doing our program, I am very excited to say that we have had working dancers by night who were, by day:

    3 Attorneys
    2 Doctors
    4 Real Estate Agents
    1 Microbiologist
    1 Theatrical Stage Manager
    1 Firefighter
    1 Linguistics expert
    1 College English professor
    1 High School Teacher
    1 High School Vice Principal
...and I'm sure many more I missed.

Not that having a college degree is the end-all, be-all. The majority of the most successful people I know don't have one. It is, though, a great thing to see how there are so many women who rise-above the stereotype.

Im 21 years old and a college senior, i'll be graduating this year. i'll have a degree in history and psychoanalytic studies, and i'm thinking about pursuing a phD afterwards. i dance part time to pay for school and mostly to pay for my credit card debt, but i am definitely done w/dancing once i graduate. i meet lots of people in my situation though, but i cant wait till i graduate.

I have a BA in technical theatre (i mostly enjoy stage management and running lights) but i still dance for the lifestyle that it allows me to have.
i don't quite mean that in the traditional sense though,i think. i still dance because it allows me to live in the country rather than the city. to seriously pursue a job in the theatre industry i would have to live in a larger city. i don't find this increadably appealing (the largest town i've ever lived in is 8000) so dancing lets me live somewhere i love.

I did not complete my college degree, but I did go and decided that academia was not for me. I take classes a couple times a year in areas that I find interesting, not because I'm working toward a goal of a degree.

I have several friends with college degrees. One friend has a degree in law (she works as a secretary for a temp agency), another has an IT degree (he is a construction worker), another has a degree in theater (a masters at that) and she waitresses at Sizzler. I have met many dancers with degrees. Mostly nurses, and more then a few with fashion degrees, art degrees, and lot of beauticians. They all still dance.

I love being a dancer, and I plan on dancing as long as I possibly can.

As far as the money dissappearing in this business, I haven't seen it. I follow BGMNM's guidelines for clubs that I work at. Although I've never earned huge sums of cash on a daily basis I am happy with my work and my income. So, "if ain't broke don't fix it," tends to be my motto!

P.S. I am 35 (will be 36 in two months), and I generally earn quite a bit more then dancers 10 years younger then me working in the same club.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

Yea i have a degree in Media and am just finishing off my Masters in Journalism (finish in a month) and while I coudl have got a real job at the end of last year...after looking for jobs, your right...the real worl ain't what it has cracked up to be. To go into a job where I would make a quarter of what I do now and treated with less respect than I do now. I think not.

I have a BFA in theater (which I would not recommend to anyone, a total waste of time) and have a little more to complete on an MFA in writing (which I will never complete, even more of a waste of time). School taught me nothing other than how to operate within a beauracratic structure. I could have learned the same in prison and not had student loans. That being said, I think completing one's degree is worthwhile, if for no other reason than because it gives you pride of ownership and evidence that you can complete something you set your mind to. This is an invaluable feeling, since in dancing we are usually independant contractors, setting our own structures and it's easy to feel ungrounded and doubt your ability to operate in a structured setting.
I totally agree with Lena on the wage slave stuff. In fact, I think I will print her quote and put it in the dressing room so everyone can have a little pep in thier step tonight at work.
As for the explained absence on your resume: just say you were helping to riase children, care for a dying relative, or run your own internet retail business, etc. etc. It's not that hard to substantiate absences, just draw from what you know and could rhapsodize on in an interview situation. Alternatively, I once just bit the bullet and told a prospective employer I was a dancer and got hired FOR that reason. He was a shrewd as nails top-ranking Hollywood studio executive and didn't want a shrinking violet as an assistant. So each situation calls for it's own disclosure.
As for explaining away a legal paper trail, knock on wood, I've never had to do that. I imagine there would be ways to fight this, anyone care to elaborate on thier experience, perhaps a different thread? I know that I have worked in differrent clubs where girls were arrested for thisorthat, taken away in cuffs, and then when it came down to the court date, the judge just threw it out. A lot of drama amounting to nothing. It is my understanding that when these "arrests" are made everyone's palms get greased: lawyer representing the city, lawyer representing the club/girl, city politician who put the raid in place via his/her policies. It is a money-generating scheme usually at the expense of the club owners (who will pay more to protect themselves form further raids), and at the personal mortification of the girl in question. When you remove the stigma and emotional attachment of getting "arrested", you see there is nothing more than profiteering going on by local authorites, aka as extortion. The mafia has understood this valuable earning strategy for years. I think I got off on a tangent, were we talking about college degrees?

Yep. I have a BFA in painting/photography. Was working three jobs just to put a little bit in savings every month on top of my expenses. I resonate with Lena's comments about working in a wage economy. I felt used and owned when I would drive home from my 40 hr a week job, and eventually felt like an idiot for doing it for so little money. That feeling ate me up! So yep, I have my diploma right here, and I'm actually driving up to the club I want to work at TODAY to see if I can apply. Here goes...

I've got an MD, in a country with no job opportunities; besides this, female MD are treated sometimes worse then strippers in slum clubs.

That is really amazing - you girls are so smart My respect to all the ladies, who consciously made a decision to strip, although they had enough brains to get a degree.

I will graduate with honors from Psy BA this semester, did a part of my undergrad work in Europe. I already applied for grad school in Industrial relations, but before I start there next fall I would love to come back to dancing for a several months.

I danced in the bikini club two years ago – it was amazing experience. Being always praised only for the academic achievements I was surprised to realize that I can do well in a setting like SC.

As Pamela said – one uses psychology there everyday, so I guess I can say that work in SC would be within my degree

I have a B.A. with honors and a Master's with highest honors. My Master's is from a university that is quite well-respected in my field. I also have a good career I enjoy. I dance on the weekends because it's fun, and to get out of debt more quickly. I should have my credit card paid off by the New Year, and my car paid off (two years early) by the end of 2006. And that's dancing just one night a week. You can't beat that.

But I'm in it mostly for the fun, not the money. You're only young and beautiful for a little while!

I have a degree (and a really good one) and cetificated papers up to my neck in like 5 other things but I have NEVER come across a job I was qualified for that can pay like stripping can and thats really sad because sometimes I feel my degrees going to waste. When I take a break and go and do a 'normal' 9-5 job I get agitated because Im used to the stresses and excitement of working the clubs, but when Im working the clubs its like, did I go through 4 years of training to dance nekked and grind on mens privates for money?
    Hard choice.

I honestly think that once i'm done with my degree in may, i will dance rather than look for a job right away... i want to take a break and save up money..... i'm in the best shape of my life right now... such a shame to waste it.....
