    Default Computer Whizzes

Hi, I would like to buy a new notebook computer, not a real expensive one. I want it to be wireless with dvd/cd burner, lol although i want it for distance education classes. which one do you all recommend? i went on dell and there seems to be alot of cheap or reasonable priced notebooks, but everytime you click on one all these selections come out. i'm just so clueless. Can someone help me decide PLEASE. THANKS.

I really wouldn't get too cheap of a laptop, remember the old saying, you get what you pay for. I would look to spend between $1000-$1200. Try and get the following - Pentium 4 M Centrino (1.6GHz-1.8GHz), 512MB memory, 15" or 15.4 " screen, cd-rw/dvd-rom, wireless g, and at least 40GB hard drive. I would stay away from Dell and take a look at HP or Toshiba. HP would be my first choice. Go for a business model over a consumer one, they're built better. Warranty is important, most of the cheaper ones carry 1 yr or less. You can get some HP Smartbuys that carry a 3 yr warranty. If anything goes wrong w/ your laptop in 3 yrs, they will send you out a box, pick it up and have it back to you in a day or 2. Take a look at the HP nx6120 series notebooks if you want a good one.

^ Very, very good advice with regard to real costs and system specs, though I lean toward IBM first (ThinkPads are built like tanks with incredible support) followed by Toshiba (love me some Satellites...). Toshiba and IBM are the only manufacturers that actually build their own laptops--everyone else contracts out to the five main Taiwanese subcontract designers.

My secondary system is an IBM R40 ThinkPad, though I've been getting clients T42s lately and feeling very envious.

PS--stay far away from the cheap Dells; they suck.

I second that on the Dells - they are not made like they use to be. HPs aren't much good either.

^ The more expensive the laptop, irrespective of manufacturer, the better built it is. The higher-end Dells and HPs are pretty damn good, but you have to drop at least $1200-$1400 to start.

My sister has a Dell ultralight 700m, and it's great, but it wasn't cheap either.

Apple G4 Ibook or Titanium, best and most reliable BY FAR. Costs about $300 more than a "normal" notebook (for the same size screen, mac packs in lots of other features) but worth it.

other than that, my gf has an HP she's happy with...
