    Sad Dried, Fried Hair!

Hey, folks. Just finished reading Katrine's thread, shamp. & cond. recs. Sorry, none of that sh** works for me. My hair's long, dyed & overhighlighted (from last yr. thanks to a no-brain "pro"). I have been taking good care of it, I need a trim & will get 1, (when the moon phase it right). Here's a sample of the mediocre crap I've been using: Matrix Color Smart creme leave-in, Wella Kolestral deep conditioner, Matrix leave in spray, Aussie Deeep Cond., & Nexus Emergencee, + Royal African Oil. Any recs? I'll try anything!. Thanks.

If your hair is that damaged you're not going to get results overnight. First, go get a trim. Then you can try out the Federic Fekkai products. I love them. Try the Protein Rx Peparative Treatment Mask or the Hair Mask w/ Shea Butter. Or you can try Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment. The right brush and comb can make a difference too, check Federic Fekkai on that also. Get online and check out Sephora.com. They have everything. Or try bluemercury.com, another great resourse.

Start washing your hair 1-2 times a week. All of the other days do a conditioning rinse. It really saved my hair when I was growing out the fried highlighted parts of it.

BTW...where was that salon that screwed up your hair, again???

Yes I totally agree you should only shampoo your hair a couple times of week and just use a deep conditioner. A really good conditioner out there is Keraphix.. it has been a miracle to me, because normally I have dry course curly hair...and its the worst to keep in good condition, plus after straightening it everyday and putting color in.. it really is damaging.

Well, thanks, gracious ladies! I do only wash 1 - 2 X's wkly, max. I do def. need a trim, just can't afford 1 now. I do trim very little myself, ocasionaly. I have been wanting to try Fekkai prods. I think the sun damaged it more, altho I tried to be careful w/covering head, "sunscreem" for hair usage, etc. I very gently comb/detangle with a soft rubber comb, have boar brushes too.

Venus, it was Foccacio (sp.?) on Highland Ave., in Arl.Hts. The thing was, I had been to the same person there, for a yr. straight & the last time she did my hair, she had like 5 clients, + was training a new person...grr I got my $ back, but still. I now go to Trio Salon in Evanston, had previously gone to their downtown location on & off for 10 yrs. They have "fixed" my hair b/4 too. They've been praised in Allure & other mags.

First things first, get a trim. And not just a "trim" but have them cut off ALL of the damaged hair. Some people just don't like the possiblility of cutting their hair. If your hair is as damaged as you say, you may be needing to cut some inches off. Even if your hair will be significantly shorter than what it is now, it will be more healthy.

The last thing you want is for your ends to split all the way to the root of your hair. Hair that comes out of your scalp is so healthy. Keep that attached to the damaged ends at the bottom, will then hurt the top.

All those conditioners and haircare items you are buying won't do anything for you until you get those ends trimmed. Once they get trimmed, but in a nice conditioner, and sit under a hooded dryer so that the conditioner can soak into the hair shaft.

Ok Whirlerz, you got me thinking now. Now are you trimming your hair yourself with cutting shears, or regular scissors?

if it's damaged enough and you don't cut the damage out, it will start to fall out and stop growing. it happened to me, and i had to get it bobbed and it's taken two years to grow back. so cut off everything that's damaged! trust me! learn from my horrible mistake.

I have the answer darling, Loreal's Vive Conditioner and put also a layer of Pantene, works like a charm!! I flat iron my hair daily, I also have short hair, so cutting it is not an option for me, so far, I have been using this combo of conditioner and is has shown marvelous results.

No, I definately have geniune stylist scissors. I do like to go get a pro trim, tho. I can't, won't get more than a couple inches off..It's just now not resonding to what I've been using. Also, I've been really hit hard w/seasonal allergies this year. When you're sick, hair can take a beating just from that. Thanks for all the great input, ladies!

I learned this from Pamela, olive oil is a great hair sealant. Depending on your schedule, you can leave it in or wash it out with gentle shampoo. No more blow dryer or hot iron. Braid/ponytail. Brush twice daily and massage your scalp.
When I stupidly bleached my hair out a few years back, I found KMS Restructurer at the beauty supply store...for you money, this is a fine heavy conditioner you can leave in.
Try some of those "Wal-Mart hair pills" - I use a generic brand called Nutra Choice & it's working.

Ok, thanks, I'll try the KMS. I do have African Royale "Hot Six" oil. I got it from Sally's, the main ingredient is olive oil. I use it on my skin too.

Oh, I'm sure you've heard of using Mane & Tail....Miss Horse Whisperer! My money's on KMS though.

PS Why not try cornrows? I believe pressure stimulates hair growth. Of couse, anyone is welcome to set me straight on this.

Yes, I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago. The lady left the bleach on too long and I looked like a canary when she finished. The salon manager put some low lights in to make it look normal but it was still fried and ended up falling out. I finally found a good guy who gave me a cut. I went from almost breast length hair to a short bob barely reaching the bottom of my face. I put extensions in at that point and it gave my hair a break for a while (8 months). Now my hair is finally healthy again and collarbone length. I use Nexxus Y serum. It claims to give you more "youthful" hair but I don't know about that. But my hair is damn sure in a lot better shape than it was. I also agree with Venus about only washing every few days. That way your hair has more time to absorb the oils from your scalp instead of washing them away every day. I wash every other day and if my hair is really stinky from work then I just condition. Leave the conditioner on though for a least 3 minutes before rinsing. I always shave my legs while the conditioner is on my hair. Another good thing is to cut back on the blow dryer and curling iron. I use an ion dryer if I must blow dry and use velvet hot rollers for work if I want to go curly.

Pressure on you hair and scalp causes breakage. You also need the natural oils from your scalp to nourish all of your hair.Brushing your hair gently from the nape of your neck up promotes healthy growth and shine.

I heard Mane and Tail has a really bad waxy build-up...but some people love it. Everytime I get really damaged hair I get the L'oreal cond. Nutrivive. It works really well for me, that and no heat styling.
Biotin is supposed to maximize hair growth. I know when I was taking it my hair grew something like 10 inches/year as opposed to the regular 6 inches.

I've been using vitamin E oil (left in over night) and it's been working pretty well.

Also taking Vitamin E supplements orally along with the "Hair" pills (plus Vitamin C and Tonalin). The combination seems to be good for the hair and skin.

Yes, I've used the Nex. Y Serum, I think it worked good (been awhile). I NEVER heat style. Girls, I was on lookfantastic.com last nite, they have lots of hair/skin prods. There are custy reviews (not on all products). Joico Intensive Moisture got several 5 star ratings, so I might get it, they have it at my local Ulta.

Whirlerz. Damaged hair is just that. We can make it look better and feel better only to a certain extent. I always used hot olive oil treatments. Even to the point of mixing some in with my conditioner and warming both up. I also washed my hair only 3 times a week.

I bleached the hell out of it, and dyed it, and blached it. But, it looked ok here on camera perhaps, but if i did not use a smoothing cream to hold the cuticles that were so damaged it looked very damamged!

The only thing to start with is a good cut or trim. Once a cuticle is damaged the hair shaft keeps "tearing" all the way up the piece of hair. I hated that.

My hair is still considered long by all, but it only a few strands fall below my boobs, to me that is short. When she was cutting my hair (because i hate salons and don't go for cuts) she explained all this to me. And how damaged the long hair was, but how good i made it look. Strange i know.

She never tried to sell me products! She only explained my hair length and the major damage. Boy after she washed it i saw it.

I still will be a huge lover of olive oil treatments, most don't do it, because it's messy or their hair stays greasy they say. So then i say mix a few drops in with you're conditioner and warm them both up! It's great!!!!!

Now my hair is super blonde all over the front and top, and black under and around the upper back of the head some. I did this after the cut, she explained how to pull the blonde up and what to dye.

Then she said use Loreal, because they are good over the counter products for the hair. I have been using them for years. But changed

Anyway, condition condition condition!!!!! Most important after a trim. Shampoo may feel good, but our heads are not as dirty as we think.

    Good luck,

    Pamela

Haha, just b/4 reading this^, I took my Hot Sixx bottle of oil, & saturated (somewhat) my hair. It has olive, wheat germ, sesame, vitamins & herbs in it. I know I need the trim, I just have to get a couple paychecks goin'. Thanks.

Pam-I swear by olive oil too... this is the only thing along with regular six week trims that have saved my hair...

Last year, all the swimming I did killed my hair... and I also had blonde highlights placed in over my naturally red hair and the person who did it left it on too long... my hair was so damn fried, it has taken vitamins, faithfully regliously done trims and olive oil to revive it...

It is now shoulder length, but the choppiness is almost gone.. I had to layer my hair after all the crap that happened to it...

I'm kind of curious about the hot olive oil treatments.... My hair is kind of weird. It is frizzy to no end, yet I have to wash it every day because it is so thin and my scalp produces a massive amount of oil or something. If I don't shampoo my hair every day, it gets oily and stringy and gross. But at the same time, everything but four inches from my roots is pretty dry.

I dunno if anyone else has this problem. I know that it is damaged (too poor to go to salons to get a trim) from stupid bleaching decisions and split ends. It is dry and not very soft to the touch... So it needs moisterizer or something desperately... Yet every moisterizer or deep conditioner that I try causes my scalp to create oil overdrive. It does not look healthy in the slightest.

It is some Dr. Jackyl and Mr. Hyde combination and I am just at a loss of what to do. Advice? Anyone?

runawaywaltz- try taking oil pills, to normalize the amount of oil your skin puts out to lubricate skin and scalp.
In the shower, rinse your hair with hot water and massage the scalp to loosen dirt & oil but don't shampoo. I only shampoo once a week, twice if needed.
Quit bleaching your hair for good- if you want a different look, buy a wig or fall (fake ponytail.)
Start taking those Wal-Mart Hair pills (with silica). And start wearing your hair up to keep it from getting trashed.

Actually, you could use this "over oily" problem to your advantage. Your hair absorbs your own body oils better than any oil on the market. Take a nice, natural bristle brush and section out your hair. Brush from the crown of your head to the very ends several times...do that throughout all of the sections. Then, resection your hair and brush from the nape of your neck to the end of the hair. It helps distribute oil all over.

I have very naturally curly hair and one thing I learned is to NEVER use a brush on my hair (except the natural bristle brushes). Especially if your hair is wet; always use a wide-tooth comb. Using a brush on wet hair can cause hair snappage (from the strands wrapping around the brush bristles and breaking) which makes your hair look more frizzy.

Wash (shampoo) you hair 1-2 times per week and really wash the scalp. Squeeze the shampoo through to the ends of the hair, but no rubbing. Don't condition the scalp area, but condition the ends of the hair. On the other days, use a warm-water conditioning rinse (just use warm water and get your hair wet which opens the cuticles, apply conditioner and then rinse out. Use cool water to finish the rinse).

    Hope that helps!
