    Sad Should I quit??

    hey, I need some opinions!

I recently took 2 weeks off of work because I had family visiting and it was really nice to be able to relax. I wwent back to work last week and I was really glad to be back. I missed the place, the money, the people and a lot of stuff. I truly like my job.

    But it doesn't like me.

My knees hurt really bad. Not in the joint really, more on top. Like the skin...it feels really bruisy feeling. Like if I rub my hand over my knee it's like I poked a bruise. One of my knees is swollen and puffy. (going to the doc, it's probably fluid) I noticed that they aren't healing like they used to.

I used to be kinda sore after work and a good nights sleep or a day off was all I needed to feel normal. Now it won't go away.

Is it crazy to keep working!? I also am experiencing some ankle pain which varies from uncomfortable to pretty painful. (old sprain acting up) I feel like I'm getting old! I've been dancing for about 6 months...

What do you guys think would help?

Aww, sorry you are in a lot of pain! I would suggest Ibuprofen for the pain and swelling, and just keep icing it until your Doctors appointment, and your Doc can tell you whats up. By the way, was it mostly pole work or floor that got your knees banged up? I'm not a dancer, I'm a waitress at a Pastie Club. Just wondering if theres other moves you can do that wont interfere with your knees for a while. Hope you get better soon!

    Hey Heaven,

I recently went through exactly what you are describing and it was really scary. I thought about quitting dancing as well! Anyway, I went to GNC and got glucosamine with chondroitin. It's been a week now I've been taking the pills and the pain is gone. From talking to the sales guy at GNC, this stuff is a best seller (and for good reason). Anyway, definitely get some and reassess what movements/actions were the cause of this knee pain (in my case, kneeling and doing lots of squats in heels that were too high). Better to cut out certain risky moves and keep your knees healthy!!

Yes do some supplements and make sure you see a doctor.

Like you have described I think you feel like you want to quit b/c they way your body feels. Its doesnt seem that youre doing bad moneywise or you are emotionally damaged b/c of dancing. So you seem good there.

Seems like you are sleeping to make yourself better. If your body doesnt rest well then you wont work well. Your body is just telling you "hey take better care of me or Im gonna crap out during your shift" I know you workout n such but try refining your lifestyle to fit your bodies new needs. I think youll feel better after that.

It is that time of year, could you just be suffering a little more then normal because of cold/flu? I get really achy when I have a cold, and hurt a lot more at work.

Reguardless, you should get medical help. Also think about hiring a personal trainer who is educated in sports therapy, as you may be expeirencing the early signs of tendonitis or other joint mobility issues. The best thing to do if you are getting joint pain and stiffness is to keep moving. I know it hurts, but lack of use is worse. Of course this all depends on if you are injured or not.

My husband suffers from tennis elbow and goes to get laser treatments once a week, and he feels much better after trying other things like anti inflamatories and topical treatments. So don't give up if the first thing you try doesn't work, just try something else instead.

you might just need some shoes with a shorter heel. how long have u been back? you're gonna hurt after the first few days of being gone for a while, your body has to get used to it again. the swelling in your knee isnt good, i'd wait til after the doctor visit to go back.
Oh, I musta took a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

Wear tight thigh high boots. The compression and material will protect your knees and ankles.

Also, incorporate Yoga and Pilates. It'll strengthen up your body and help limber you up at the same time.

Well, I did the last week back and I had 4 shifts. OWIE! The pain in the surface of my knees seems to be a lot better but it takes a couple of days worth of rest to get them to stop hurting. The swollen one is better, not 100% but it is better. (Still going to go to the Dr.)

You guys are right, I didn't expect the 2 weeks to make such a huge difference in my "dance tolerance"! I have neen a little flu-ey too.

I usually wear 7" heels and I think they are pretty comfortable. At the first of the month I'm going to go to GNC and get some joint supplements. I'd rather take care of my joints now, than try to reverse damage later!

On the whole, I think my body is saying "Take care of me or I QUIT!" I can't just keep dancing without the maintenance part, I don't want to take advantage of my body. It would be like driving an expensive car and never changing the oil!!

    THANKS GIRLS!

I don't hear this mentioned often, but what has always helped me are Omega-3 supplements. I picked it up during my vegetarian vitamin-crazy years and I think it really is what has kept me going.

I take 1 800mg Triomega softgel every day and my knee never bothers me.

I noticed in your profile you said you ride horses? If so that is more then likely a main source for your pain. I ride extensively used to be on the YR Team for Canada etc... and almost anyone who rides horses will tell you it takes a major beating on your knees. Im sure dancing is part of it but riding does it as well. MSM with Gloucosamine(I cant spell) is a great supplement to try for this. Avoid anti imflamitory drugs like advil taking them to often can cause liver damage. There are lots of natural remidies out there to help you. Im sure you can find something, not many people can say they love there job so if you can do something to keep it do it. Good Luck.
