    Sad more knee problems

    hey all,
this is my first actual post (as opposed to replying to other's posts) and i have a question. has anyone out there ever had brusitis (pronounced bra-ci-tis - i probably spelled it wrong). it's the first problem i've had with either of my knees in seven years of dancing and it's had me off work for the last two weeks.
anyway, apparently it's when fluid forms above your kneecap causing it to look like you shoved a baseball under your skin (sorry for the graphic description ).
the doctor has been very non-commital about how long it should take to get better, and i was wondering if any of you might know...
    any info would be appreciated!
    thanks

I get bracitis in my knees too. I just try to put as little strain on it as possible until the fluid goes down. My knee swells when I perform certain pole tricks- so I avoid those tricks. Other dancers I know who have bracitis go to the emergency room and have it drained. They say it is extremely painful and it's only a short term fix. The doctors remove the fluid but the problem is still there. Then you'll be in a never ending routine of going to the E.R. every few weeks. Try to figure out what is causing the bracitis-maybe you can prevent it.

YOu should talk to your doc about a cortizone shot. The injection itself hurts but short of surgery, I don't think there is much to be done about bursitis. I have it, too and I just get the shot to treat it. You should only have to have it about every 3-6 months if even that often. Good luck.

You don't mention specifically if the bursitis is directly over your knee cap or just below the knee cap, but in any case, the initial treatment is the same. Rest, elevation, alternating heat and ice packs, anti-inflammatories, and compression with an ACE wrap.

The most important part of the treatment is to stop all activity that aggravates it. Unfortunately, what typically causes it is repetitive trauma and pressure on the site, i.e. like spending a lot of time on your knees. (Plumbers get this same injury a lot) Cortisone injections are usually recommended after 10 days of conservative therapy have failed.

If they continue to be a problem, there are a couple of alternatives. There are materials that can be injected into the bursa itself to scar it down, or it can be surgically removed. An orthopedic surgeon would be the one to discuss this with further.

    Good luck.
