    Phony $20 bills

Supposedly there are fake $20 bills floating around in my area, and we were all told to watch out for them. I don't have enough time to check every twenty I get, and my custies would probably look at me weird as I carefully examined the twenty they had just given me. Has anyone had this problem? And I hate to say it, but if they're good fakes, then why wouldn't I be able to spend them somewhere like on gas or something?

No offense, but do you want a visit from the Secret Service? My niece just knew a kid in school who made funny money and got a surprise visit.

Remember all gas stations have TV cameras (which get your licenses plate and face).

The easiest way to tell fake money is by its feel. The linen (yes it is not paper, but linen) bills are printed on has a very distinctive feel which is very hard to copy.

There is also a strip that is visible if held up to the light.

Why dont' you want to spend a fake bill? As mentioned above, you'll get a visit, plus, if the store clerk marks it with the counterfeit pen.. you'll be paying ...

Hold up the bill to a light and you should see a strip inside that says $20 US currency or something along those lines..

I'm not saying I would intentionally spend a fake dollar bill; I meant that if it was a good fake, I would most likely spend it without knowing it was fake. People in this area just don't check twenty dollar bills.

Here weve had a lot of $5 bills that were bleached and re-printed as a $100 bill... looked real, felt real, had the strip, passed the pen test... only difference is you see Lincoln in the bill instead of Franklins... Im always careful... I check all my bills before i go home and the club will change out the fakes for reals.. altho im sure most clubs wont do that.

We have that a lot in chicago. I walk around with one of those pens tucked in my garter. If customers ask, I just say "Hey. This is a business. I make money just like a store and I don't want to get ripped off."

Awhile back, I knew of a situation where a lady accepted some fake tens (by mistake), tried to use @ grocery store. She had to use another method to pay, & got an FBI visit, as did the agency..

Yep, better look those $20s over good- my local minimart taped a phony one up for everyone to see and they were wondering why I was eyeballing it so closely. LOL The counterfeiters has "distressed" the bill to make detection harder, rips, worn spots and all.
If your eyesight & the lighting is good enough (like in the bathroom), look for the tiny red & blue fibers in the paper of the bill- these are from cotton scrap Levi Strauss Jeans sells to the US Mint to make the paper for money.

PS I hate counterfeiters because if I have to earn my living they should too. Also hate them for passing off bills at Mom & Pop stores, as it's likely they'll get away with it and the family business swallows the loss, as if it wasn't hard enough for small businesses in America.

Get one of the pens you see the store clerks using at just about every convenience store and/or gas station and make good use of it - only takes a second or two and, once you've had some practice, I suspect you'll wind up being able to surreptiously do it without anyone really realizing what you're doing... and, more importantly, without him even hqaving enough time to make the front door!

That said, if you should nevertheless find yourself in possession of what you believe to be a counterfeit bill, don't compound your problems by attempting to just pass it on to someone else... turn it in and take the hit; Secret Service is another of the long list of government agencies you generally want to make it through life without ever having to deal with and, preferably, without their ever having had any reason at all to even realize you were here. It's well worth $20, $100 or even several hundred bucks to just stay the Hell off of their radar screen entirely.
