Default eating less meat to loose wieght?

I found this article on eating less meat leads to a lower BMI. Less likely to be obese or overwieght by having a diet of less meat.

Everyone meaning carnivores, omnivores and vegetarians also semi-vegetarians apply here.

Not just a matter of loosing wieght but living a healthier life through eating less meat. Any of your turned semi-veggie or complete vegetarian of any kind not to loose wieght but then lost wieght anyways? The over comsumption of anything can make you fat but even if youre mostly following a vegetarian diet?

Yeah ha ha, when I was a lowly biology technician making peanut wages, I couldn't afford meat- my lunches were Subway veggie sandwiches with cheese. And I was so skinny & hungry all the time.
IMHO, people need to keep a source of amino acids in their diet (like dairy, or light meats) because those are building blocks your body uses to regenerate itself.
Portions also matter, Americans eat too much rich food because we can. Start cooking at home and measuring out meat for meals, or mixing it with other foods (like stir-fry or stew) and you won't feel deprived.

Most definitely. I gained a ton of weight after I quit eating meat, b/c I replaced it with bread, psta, potaotes, etc. It seems weird, but veggies have to be EXTRA careful with their carbs & calories, b/c it is so easy to let cheap carbs displace healty protein sources like soy, eggs, dairy, etc.

I hear you in re: vegetarians having to watch their carb intake. I just recently gained around 3 kgs due to this downfall.... what could I do? The damn pubs in Kalgoorlie really do not cater for vegetarians. My intake of white rice increased as well as bread due to not having many (no red meat or chicken) options in re: my free meal (as I was given at least one free meal a day). Some of them didn't even have fish as an alternative

Next time, I might stick with just having vegies (as I should be guaranteed to get this in every pub).

What about rice cakes? I know my consumption of them increased dramatically as well. Would that add to my carbs ? I would generally have the rice cake with a slight spread of hommus, a slice of tomato with a slice of cheese on top.

I personally think you need to have some sort of meat in your diet.. or you need to up your proteins with beans, and dairy (if you choose to continue to consume dairy products).

Personally for me, I have a difficult time with red meat, but I find that my body does crave it once in awhile.. I mainly stick to fish, chicken and pork all in small quantities.

I dont' crave carbs. And if I have carbs, they are in the form of high fiber things like cereal (I don't drink much milk so I usually buy a cereal that I can eat dry as a snack- Quaker Oatmeal Squares is a personal favorite).. or I will eat a healthy granola bar and not the ones you buy in the regular grocery store, but I found these really yummy healthy granola bars at a co-op store that sells all health concious items.

Some of you know, that I used to be around 150, usually around 145-150 *at five feet seven inches* and am now around 120 pounds.. I started taking tonalin, I cut out all processed food, fast food and also began eating fresh vegetables.. I have found that no matter what I eat, my body still will crave meat so I give my body what it wants.. only in smaller portions. But I also think that you shouldn't cut it out entirely.. energy has to come from somewhere.. and eating vegetables all the time is not going to give you that boost you need, plus you don't want to become anemic. Eating meat has its benefits, just cut it back if you feel that you have to. We dont' require a lot anyways, just enough to give us what we require.

another HUGE problem with vegetarianism is iron-deficiency anemia (i have a test on this tomorrow, lol).... you have to make sure you're consuming complete proteins (since no ONE vegetable has complete protein) and have vitamin C in order to make your body absorb the right amount of iron. vitamin B12 is also found mostly in meats. However, talk to a doctor, or at least a dietitian before starting an iron supplement or, try to do so before switching to a vegetarian lifestyle

Well, I quit eating red meat as a teenager. I lived on a cattle farm and had a pet cow. His name was "Red" because he was a red cow. Anyway, one day I came home from school and Red was gone I was so terrified if I ate a cheeseburger I would be eating him so I quit altogether.

Now, as an adult I know this is kinda silly but I haven't had it in so long I have no desire for it. I think LEAN cuts of red meat are just fine health wise. But for me I eat LOTS of chicken breast and fish. And alot of canned tuna, even though I know about the mercury warnings and all, but I love it. I also get alot of my protein from soy products and lowfat dairy like cottage cheese.

If you are gaining weight as a vegetarian, you are eating to many calories. The carb content of your diet is not the reason for weight gain (so long as you aren't eating within a couple hours of going to sleep).

Carbs matter more than calories mainly when you are doing a low carb diet because of the way it tricks your body.

the carb content of something is related to the calorie content though... think about it
    1 gram of fat - 9 calories
    1 gram of carbs= 4 calories
    1 gram of protein=4 cals

you can even use that to see how they dont quite match up on a lot of labels...

anyways, carbs do matter, but nothing matters more than something else.. the key is to finding things that are balanced....

if anyone wants a diet analysis, let me know, i have the software to do it, but i can't give any personal analysis without making it very clear i am NOT a registered dietician... but i can give ya the software results

I think you need to keep some source of protein in your diet, otherwise you risk making yourself anemic as well as not have the proper cellular building blocks to repair your muscles.
I completely stopped eating meat when I was 18. I did lose weight, but it wasn't where I wanted. I lost it in my face and legs when I was aiming for my butt and arms. It made me look really emaciated and not to mention bruising very easily. My legs got weak really easy to and that doesn't work when you're a swimmer. I would suggest if you cut out meat to replace it with other proteins such as beans, otherwise you risk replacing it with carbs. You can make your own hummus also so look up tasty alternatives to meat on the web and you should find lots of info.

I'm sorry, but calories are the bottom line when it comes to weight gain/loss.

Diregarding nutrition, if I ate nothing but 2000 calories a day* of lard, it wouldn't be much different than my eating 2000 calories a day* of pasta or some soy tofu.

    * by 'calories a day 'I dont mean ingested, I mean absorbed while digesting. Some calories your body just can't absorb, like in fiber. So you an obviously discount what you eat vs what you don't absorb.

A balance has to be reached, I think. To me, protein-rich foods will keep me full longer than carb rich ones (A salad with lots of chicken on it versus a bagel), but at the same time...too much meat isn't good for you.
I usually have about 4 dairy servings a day (yogurt, milk in my tea, cottage cheese etc), and chicken or fish/some other form of protein with dinner, sometimes, like today I had tuna with my lunch also. I have really limited my red meat intake and only eat it one or two times a month, <take a stab in the dark what part of the month, lol>. As long as the meat you are eating is lean and you limit it, you should be fine.

The point I was making about the carbs is that you have to make sure you don't let carbs DISPLACE protein, which is really easy to do. For example, you can go to almost any restaurant in America and get spaghetti w/maraina sauce, pasta primavera, or veggie stir fry with white rice. Dishes like these will make you feel full but you will NOT get protein from them.

What you can get from eating this way is very, very sick with protein malnutrition. Trust me; I know.

I stopped eating meat almost 3 months ago. This was purely because I felt sorry for animals (as good as they tasted, I couldn't bear to touch meat anymore).

I stopped eating meat instantly. I haven't touched even a morsel of meat in the past 3 months, and I don't think i'll ever touch it again.

To answer your question though, I haven't lost or gained any weight. I'm a carb fanatic and I've been eating a bit more junk lately...mostly because I'm in College, and my mom can't see what i'm eating! (She's a health freak, and goes crazy when I eat anything bad!)

I've stayed at the 110 mark (i'm almost 5"3). My weight is pretty steady, but I think that if I didn't eat as much junk my weight would have probably went down a few pounds.

Vegetarians are most likely to have lower rates of obesity because they are generally more conscious of what they put into their bodies. They are also less likely to be smokers. The same applies to tea drinkers. I don't think the message should be that meat makes you fat, just that knowing what you're eating is a good idea.

I eat meat only about once, maybe twice a month; I stopped eating meat altogether when I was 12 because I didn't like the taste and I love animals, but I suffered from horrible anaemia for so long that nowdays I figure it's probably best for me to eat just enough meat to keep me from dizzy spells & tiredness. Iron tablets always took a long time to work, and one of my nutrition lecturers also mentioned in one of his lectures that taking iron tablets for more than 3 months is harmful to the body- but he didn't elaborate and I haven't bothered to look into it as yet.

I still never eat chicken because I want to get as much iron as I possibly can out of the meat I do eat and unless the chicken you eat is organic, free-range chicken, you are most likely also ingesting intensively-raised chickens that have lived in cramped, unsanitary conditions and consumed feed loaded with antibiotics (as a growth-promoter and to pre-empt the disease that is inevitably rife in crowded conditions). I also had some very much-loved pet chickens when I was a kid, so I pay my respects to them by not eating their relatives!

i eat meat as my primary food, with vegetables and fruit (dried and fresh) thrown in there as my sides. i eat all the meat, skin, fat, etc. even sometimes using bones for stock. i also try to cook my vegetables in oil. and now and again i have eggs and cheese.

i throw that out there because i can't gain weight. when i wasn't dancing, i ate this way and weighed about 103. since i took up dancing i briefly gained 5 pounds or so, but now, eating the exact same way (but more often, and more in the way of soups and stews), i weigh the same as i did pre-dancing, and it's mainly muscle.

notable in my typical diet is a near-total absence of rice (except very rarely brown rice), potatoes, baked goods and other such carbs. i also drink a fair amount of water and juice.

i'm just saying, i've never dieted, and my weight's always been low, no beer belly, or ass sag, or love handles, and so forth. and i eat mostly meat. so i always suggest eating meat (i stick with fowl of various types, and beef, and less often fish like salmon), since i can't seem to really gain weight going that route. anyhow.
