    Arrow Investing $2000

I have $2000 AUD to invest. I'm personally still deciding if I want to invest it for income or capital growth or a bit of both.

How would you invest $2000? Would you invest for income, capital growth or both ? What would you invest that money in...? Would you invest in a managed fund ?

If your plans were to eventually have the credit worthy-ness to be able to qualify for a business loan (a loan amount of $10,000 +) so you can buy businesses (or even start your own).... how would you invest $2000 so you can realise this plan: would you invest for income, capital growth or both ?

It might be different in Australia, but I don't think any kind of investing does much of anything towards your credit rating. Could be wrong though-

Since you probably don't want to risk the money, I'd say put it in a high interest savings account, and have $200 a month come out over the next 10 months. Have it go into a dividend fund of some sort, and have the dividend reinvest itself.

This is with my limited knowledge of investing a pretty safe way to go, with (probably) a higher yeild than a plain old term investment.

Forget I'm an Australian asking these questions. I'm just interested in how people will reply to my questions

Most people who come into a sum of money wishing to invest it overlook the obvious. If you have any credit cards you carry a balance on, put the $2k towards the debt that might be costing you 20-some% interest annually.

There's always an element of risk to investing, unless you're willing to settle for the trivial amounts paid by a savings account or 4% in a long term GIC. Paying down high interest outstanding loans is a sure way to save yourself a lot of money.

I don't really put an amount as small as $2000 and "investing" together. While you obviously can invest $2000, I think of that as part of something I contribute every month to some type of investment, instead of a lump sum. You ask if one of the objectives is income. Nobody's making income off $2000 alone.

Do you guys have IRAs there?

it all depends on what you want to do with it....short-term or long-term savings goals.

You should try to target a nest egg of 6 months income to live off of as liquid savings. i.e. you can get to it immediately. I would put in in a money market fund. Look for a good yield. In the U.S. the insurance companies and mortgage companies are paying the most. statefarm.com and countrywide savings bank are two.

Keep saving every month. Then start purchasing a quality mutual fund like $200 every month.

I agree that your first $10,000 at least should be pointed towards a money market fund - which is available to cover emergencies but which will still provide a little bit of interest income. Because you want fast liquidity if and when you need the money, and also to avoid exchange rate risk, I would stick with an Aussie fund.
