    Default Psyched!

Tonight, Dan is bringing me and Delia to Petco, because Monday, we're going to get a new family member! Being that we have over 15,000 evacuees from NOLA and MS, a lot of pets were either surrendered by their owners or transferred to the local shelters after being rescued in the aftermath. They have numerous litters of puppies of all kinds, as well as young, adults, and seniors. We're most likely going to adopt one of the two most adorable golden labs that were pictured on one of the websites as up for adoption.

Dan called earlier to check on their status, and they were just declared adoption-ready. Yay! We're going Monday (since he works tomorrow, and most of the shelters are closed Sunday, especially this one in particular). If for some reason they're already adopted by then, we'll just check out all the others and pick the best one for the three of us.

I'm psyched! We have this huge place with the fenced backyard that is just begging for a furry sibling for Delia to run around in with.

I'll update on Monday, and maybe throw some new pics in too.

Tonight it's off to Petco to spoil the furbaby that we don't have yet. Hahaha.

    Wish us luck for Monday!

**Pic of the 2 I mentioned is below**

No names yet.. We don't wanna jinx ourselves in case either of them are already adopted by Monday. I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed and hope that at least one of them are still there. Hahaha

I can't wait though. And all Delia has done today was run around the house screaming "Puppy!"

    Hehe

What a kind, loving thing to do. It broke my heart to see all of those lost, surrendered or abandoned animals. I love to hear about one happy ending! Kisses on the new puppies' snouts!

We went to Petco earlier tonight and stocked up on chew toys, bones, food, and all the necessities. When we left there, Dan started driving down the road, in the opposite direction of our house. So, I asked what he was doing, of course. He said "Well, I was trying to find the shelter NOW, so I'll know where it is, and I was planning on going and getting the puppy tomorrow and surprising you and Delia by bringing it home in the middle of the day!" LOL

He's always doing stuff like that. But, I talked him out of that. I think it's best that we all go together. This way, we can make sure the puppy reacts well to us and Delia. And if he/she doesn't, we'll be at the shelter and can browse around for a better suited one. He saw my point.

Although I'd love to take both pups (I can imagine how close they must be), we just wouldn't be able to. It'd be a bit too much for us. So, we're only going to take one home. I'm such a sap though.. The thought of breaking those two up breaks my heart. Is that weird? One is male, the other female.

Anyhoo.. Dan's leaving work for an hour or two tomorrow and will be by to pick us up around 12:30ish. Then, we'll head to the shelter. Yay! I'm excited, and have been puppy-proofing the house for about an hour now. LOL

One puppy or two, it is still a kind-hearted thing to do. One puppy will be plenty of work as it is! Don't worry about other puppy--a beautiful dog like that won't wait long for a new home! Enjoy new puppy guilt- free!

Thanks, Paintbaby. Honestly I wish I could take a bunch of them in. Most of the shelters are kill-shelters, and when they list animals as "due out" followed by a date, it's very saddening.

When I first brought the subject up with Dan the other night, he promptly picked the paper up and started looking through the "Pets For Sale" section. I looked at him like he had 5 heads or something and said "What the hell are you doing? We're going to the shelter to get one!" With all the shelters around here being crowded with pets needing homes, I'd never, ever think about actually purchasing a pup from a breeder or otherwise. Many would be surprised at the percentage of purebreds at shelters. They're either seized or strays that were never claimed. Very sad.

    I can't wait though. Woo!

Heh.. Gyn.. I think that's what sealed the deal with Dan. Delia walked up to him and said "Puppy?" Talk about watching a big tough grown man turn into a big puddle of moosh in 1.2 seconds... LOL

Rhia- I agree. When I get the chance to get a pup of my own (which won't be for a while since I want to wait until post-ferret times to get one) I want to adopt one from a shelter. Actually, though, I'll probably end up going with a breed specific one (a border collie or something since that's what I had as a kiddo).

Last year I rescued two pups from Mox's parent's neighbor's house. These people were SO mean to their dogs, and I finally had enough of it (when I watched/heard the guy whip up on one of the dogs with a stick). One night, we (meaning Mox, his cousin, my friend, and I) jumped the fence and took the dogs. I found a new home for them (with an AWESOME family), and they're happy and loved now!

I just can't stand to see an animal hurt! It sucks SOOOOOOOOOOOO bad! My plan later in the future (like retirement age) is to open a no-kill shelter that houses all kinds of animals (including ferrets and birds!). Hopefully I'll be able to make that happen!

Congrats on the new edition! So cool.

I've two cats. Would like a dog, however, that is impractical in my current situation.

Awwwww. How nice of you. Want a rescued snake too? They are cool! j/k!!

I did not know Petco took rescued pets. We don't have a Petco, so i never had the experience of going. We have Petsmart who brings in shelter animals!

Lotsa luck with the new one Rhi!!!

I have my hands full (2 dogs, 1 is 11 year old pit, other was put down due to age problems) snakes....You can't stop at just one!!!!!

Shit i would take them all if i could.

I know what you mean, Pamela. Everytime I visit a shelter, I want to take them all!

Petco doesn't house sheltered pets that I know of. They hold "Adoption Days" every month or so, though. We went there just to get supplies. We were kind of bummed though, we thought Delia would get a kick out of seeing some kitties. She liked the bunnies and ferrets though. Oh, when we were looking at the bunnies, we noticed the price! $65 for a bunny? When did they get to be so much? Yipes!

We're going through the main shelter here in Bartlett. Dan said they were very pleasant on the phone with him. They also offer a 3-Day Foster Program. This gives the family 3 days to decide if the new pet is right for them. If not, they can return it to the shelter and find one that suits them better.

About a half-hour to go, and then Dan's coming to pick us up to head over there. Yay!

Yeah. Petco's where i rescued our new puppy from too We had been looking everywhere for a puppy. 3 local pounds in the area and all the puppies had been taken or were on hold etc. We also adopted our kittens there too

Good luck with your new puppy/puppies. I wish we had a farm then i would have 2 dogs.......so our puppy could have a friend to play with.

We got back a little bit ago. We went in there set on getting one of those pups. But my heart was stolen about midway through the cages. I stopped all of a sudden, and turned to my left. There, standing there staring at me was a boxer mix with the sweetest looking face. I didn't even bother looking at any of the other dogs, because I was sure I'd found the one for us. Dan took Delia over to see, and as she stuck her hand through the pen, he kissed her. She giggled, of course. We called over one of the girls who was working there, and she asked if we wanted to walk with him, and play in the pen outside with him. He's pretty strong, but I kept a good handle on the leash. They did the aggression test there (pulling on his tail, pulling on his ears, etc..), and he passed with flying colors as suitable for a toddler.

They told us that he had been looked at 4 times already today! Lucky for us, they don't "hold" animals. It's first-come, first-adopt only. We had decided right then and there that he was coming home with us!

We went back inside to fill out the paperwork and all. We've decided to foster him until Thursday, and if all goes well, we'll officially adopt him then. I don't foresee any problems happening, but you never know.

He is absolutely adorable. We got home, and I had to change Delia. He followed us closely, room to room. He's sleeping right now, in the foyer. He's had fun with all his toys (The shelter gave us a few as well), and he's had a treat or two. He's such a cuddler!!! It's amazing how well he took to me, personally. I've been the one he's come up to cuddle with, and I love it! Heh.

Some pics are below. Any other pics, I'll post in the Pic section, because I don't wanna have to moderate myself or anything.. Heh..

We need your help! This little guy needs a name. Like I said, he's a boxer mix. I'm thinking he may have some Pit in him, but we'll find out when he goes to the vet next week. We'll also schedule his neutering (poor guy!) then. He is 10 months old, and is as big as he's going to get. He's about medium size, probably around 30 lbs. He's reddish in color with a little tuft of white on his chest. He's gorgeous.

    Any ideas on a name?

Ok the name has appeared to me! His name is: SAM.

It was that or Ozzymandias. But I thought sam was easier to pronounce.

Sam, eh? It could work. I must consult with Dan when he gets home. I was looking at him earlier, and the name "Fox" came to me. He's a fox-like shade of red. We'll see what whatshisface says. Also thought of "DOG (pronounced Dee-oh-gee)", only because I heard someone named their dog that once, and I thought it was too cute. LOL

Looking at him though, I don't think he has boxer in him at all. He looks more to be a Pit/Lab mix. Either way, he's staying.

Oh.. Remember what you asked earlier Mast? If he had tried to get busy with my leg or anything... Well... I just should not bend over in front of this doggy, lemme tell ya. Hahaha

He's getting clipped next week, so hopefully that'll decrease his urges a bit.

Oooh! I like Chili! I should've thought of that before we all started calling him "Fox" LOL. We also ordered tags for him bearing that name. He seems to like the name anyway.. Heh..

Went and spoiled him some more tonight. This time I headed to Tar-Ghetto solo. Didn't get too much, just some treats and a new collar. The one that we got last time was too small (or so we thought). So, we tried the larger one on him--too BIG! Ugh.. So we tried the one we got last night. It just about fits him (we can get the two fingers between the neck and the collar comfortably). So, that'll work. He's not going to get much bigger; they say he's full-grown now, at 10 months. He's adorable though, and he seems to already know this is home.

Can't wait for him to get neutered though (sorry guys). He takes every opportunity to hump anything that'll stand still long enough. LOL
