    20s Flapper show (suggestions?)

I'm in the process of 'getting together' a Flapper show (read: I havn't bought the outfit yet however I know what I want to buy/get made just waiting on the dollars).

Didn't find anything in searching the forum hence my post.

Yes, I'm already going to be using "Hanky Spanky" by Maddona as one of the songs. It was actually that song when I heard it that made me think of doing a Flapper show.

If you are one of the few who don't know what a Flapper is... Flapper 1 / Flapper 2

Some of the personality I want to portray in my music is fun/happy, cheeky/naughty, party girl.

Thank you everyone for your assistance

Hey Big Spender...not historically accurate, of course, but will go with the theme.

didnt they come up with a techno remake of "diamonds are a girls best friend"??

I cant remember who does it,and i cant find it in the pile, but from what i remember,it might work.

Also,Bette Middler comes to mind, and no,i cant find her greatest hits cd anywhere, but if i remember right, there is a wellspring from her, specially her stage stuff if you can find it.

Would the fever-sarah vaughn remix work??
I forgot the name of the cd series, but we were talking about it in here awhile ago,the series is packed with 20-40's techno remixes.
    <stabs in the dark>
    You promised me-ingrid
    mambo italiano-shaft??
(if you like the shaft song, they also have a song called "sway"that might follow well.

Check out a couple of period movies such as Cotton Club (or is that early 30s) or Ragtime?
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

Ooooooh, you have to rent the Louise Brooks movie "Pandora's Box" from 1929. It's a silent German film, but it's worth observing her mannerisms and eye contact (she plays a hypersexual showgirl.) Louise Brooks is a legend now- where Clara Bow was slutty and scatterbrained, Brooks was sharp, rebellious and talented.
I suggest this because I doubt the dance styles of the 1920s translate well to a SC stage....too herky-jerky. But the flapper look is very sexy and timeless. I would suggest finding a couple ostrich feather fans and doing a fan dance after your costume is off. I saw this on a documentary of Lenny Bruce (he married a burlesque stripper) & it looked very sexy and posh. I think it would go with the retro theme.

This isn't strictly historically correct but check out Satin Chic off the new Goldfrapp album...

Technically --- All of the music suggestions here are completely out of the period. At that time the pop music was ragtime, dixieland, pre-Vaudeville, and syrupy forgettable pop tunes. Swing was not invented yet. Even the classic "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" (my BEST non-jazz suggestion) was way in the future.

Don't be fooled by the fast-paced dancing you see in period movies; that not just because of the up-tempo dancing used then but is mostly because film projectors now in use play back the movies at a very fast clip.

I usually just take a lot of artistic license with my themed sets depending on the audience I'm dancing for. It isn't like we are trying to create a historically correct re-enactment of what a strip club would have been like in the roaring 20's. We are just trying to create a mood that matches a theme.

I would also be willing to bet that 99.9% of the customers in the bar could care less if a girl wears a theme costume and dances to something besides what most folks would think approiate for that theme. (I do an outlaw cowgirl bit using some heavy metal like Saliva, Kid Rock [not cowboy, but Bawitabaw] , and of course, Pan Terra / Cowboys from Hell .)

We are artists interpreting a style or theme in an erotic fashion. If the dancer can give the audience the feel of an era, that is enough. Ever watched a truly old fashioned burlesque strip tease? Most would find them boring in the realm of erotica. The dancers move very slow, and really are more about slooooowwwwllly removing bits and peices of costume, and then wil be toppless or fully nude for all of about 15 seconds before the lights go dark on stage.

Okay, I'm off my soap box now. I was just suggesting songs that I enjoy dancing to to evoke a mood of a bygone era

"Patricia the Stripper". Its about the 1920's.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Shirley Bassey version of "Hey, Big Spender". Her voice is sooooooo haute!

Historically accurate or not (that's a whole 'nother thread) one of my ladies does:

Zoot Suit Riot: I forget if it's cherry poppin daddies or big bad voodoo daddy
    Hell:Squirrel Nut Zippers
AAAAAAND and i would never thought this would have worked
but.... Leave Your Hat On: Joe Cocker (always a crowd pleaser)

The guys go apeshit, no one stands up and yells HEY THATS FROM THE 90'S!!

It works for her, and I made moolah too.
waffles are just pancakes with little squares on them.

Zoot Suit Riot is from the 50s; it is jazz in the style of BOP. Cherry Poppin' Daddies did a remake a it recently with vocals and I'm playing it right now. My suggestion of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" is valid if you are taking license with the period and just doing a re-enactment. I have another erotically-themed and danceable cut from the 40s and that is "You Give Me Fever" or "Fever" by Peggy Lee and others. I like the "Hey Big Spender" suggestion in that venue too; it is jazzy but not at all in the same style.

A tremendous amount of older music is available in the newsgroups if you can't find recordings. But the files are too large to upload to SW.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

    This has been great

I agree that the theme doesn't have to use actual music from 1920s ... just has to "evoke" that image for the audience and it isn't like my whole set must be this way... really only the first two songs will be 'in theme'... then I will add in more modern songs as I plan to be half naked or naked ... doing stuff (using props) by that time.

Also look into a song...forget the name...gawrsh...it's in the Dick Tracy movie, Madonna sings it...I think it's called more.
    "Got my diamonds,
    Got my yaght,
    Got a guy I adooooore....
I'm so happy with what I got -
    I want mooooooore!"

    It's a cute number.
    Also "Too Darn Hot"

If you want something slower, try the one Jessica Rabbit sings in the Roger Rabbit movie, "We had plenty money 1922..."

Try the instrumental standby "The Stripper" by the David Rose Orchestra and also Let Me Entertain You from the Gypsy Soundtrack.

That works for my flapper sets as well as the old version of Fever by Peggy Lee and the original Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend by Marilyn Monroe.

Not truly flapper but certainly more burlesque type stripping. Don't think anyone will point out to you that they are not from the Roaring 20's era

Durn. Just thought of another old one - "Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate"

Shimmy is slang for a somewhat erotic dance with lots of shaking. Well the shaking is erotic to me anyway.

Also "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." Kinda creepy if you think about it, but I knew a group of burlesque girls who did an act to this, and the crowd LOVED it.
