    Default slipped disc

Have any of you guys ever had a slipped disc?

I have one- it doesn't hurt, but it affects my mobility a bit- like I can't do back bends.

I looked it up, and it's an old person thing! I'm assuming mine is from dancing, and because I put a lot of pressure on my lower spine with the way I stand...and I'm wondering if I'm screwed for life now? Amazingly, not much info online about 'fixing' a slipped disc.

I'm going to go see an Alexander technique practitioner, but was wondering if anyone here can make me feel better by tellng me that they had a slipped disc that went back into place?

Well I've never had one but my ma and some people at work have had them. One you need to have it looked at by a doctor right away.

My ma is a little different since she has multiple problems besides just a slipped disk. She has spurs and scoliousis (sp????) to name a few so surgery was not an option she wanted to take (even though i think it would help her) So she does a lot of physical therapy to strengthen the muscles etc.

But the other two people i know had it fixed through surgery and they feel like new!! One guy was a big marathon runner. The other guy was completely dibilitated by it until he had the surgery.

I wish i had better information for you. But I think surgery is an option and it's fairly reliable. But you said it doesn't bother you pain wise, so maybe they can do something other then surgery since they are catching the problem early and before it gets out of control.

Good luck. I hope someone can give you some more detailed info.

Slipped discs don't just "slip back". My mother was almost paralized back in the 70's from ignoring a slipped disc until she couldn't walk anymore. She was 28 years old, and had suffered a fall years earlier that cause the disc to slip in the first place. She still has nerve problems from the disc damage.

On the up side, there is a new replacement disc that is very effective that doctors have been using. The end of fusing the vertabrae together as the fix. If you wish to get this fixed, you may have to pay out of pocket cash for it (not covered by insurance), but you will have increased mobility and the artificial discs are better and longer lasting then your original discs.

    Here is more info:

I have been watching this subject because all of my family members have had surgery to fix their backs at some time or another. I am a lot slimmer then everyone else in my family (and a lot more fit) so I might be able to aviod this pain!

I think you're going to have to get it put back into place, by a chiro. That would be my suggestion, of course I don't know what your stance is on chiropractic, some people swear by them and some people hate them. I have scoliosis, so i don't have much of a choice other than to swear by them!
It might not bother you now but it will have a HUGE impact as you age, guaranteed.
Good luck! And sorry i didn't get your PM earlier, i was too dumb to understand how to clean out my inbox.

Exactly what they said. scoliosis runs in my family and i feel like the pain i get in my back now might turn into something worse like my ma's if i'm not careful.. So i too keep an eye out for information on saving my back.

Chropractic is what my mother uses. And she swears by it and at it. She has been dealing with this for over 20 years. And i swear it is the same story with here every single day. She always says she's getting better. She's getting stronger with the exercises and the therapy.......But the sad truth is she's not. But it's all she has left to hope for. So she lives everyday like this and i wish she would stop being so stubborn and get the surgery. But then again it might be to late for her to even have that option

So my advice is talk to your doctor and ask about ALL the possible solutions. Surgery, physical therapy, other.......the Pro and Cons........And then decide from there. All i can say though is that from what i've seen and what I still am seeing my mother go through........I always lean towards having the surgery as a better solution followed up with physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around your vertabre.......

This happened to my mother as well about fifteen years ago; she fell on the ice, herniated a disc and X-Rays from a doctor did not pick up the damage--because X-Rays cannot see complete tissue damage as can an MRI. Eventually, after suffering excruciating pain for some time, a chiropractor noticed the disc had ruptured, and had to be removed.

Get some surgical opinions soon--since you're in Canada, there may be a long wait for a surgery like this.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

In the meantime, if your doctor allows it...start practicing Yoga. There are several moves for people with disc problems that help elongate the spine or help remove pressure off of the spine for a while.

Never had anything like that happen to me...but, go see your doctor and start researching alternatives to surgery, if possible.

    Scarlett -

A slipped disc, a herniated disc, a bulging disc..... all are synonyms for a condition where the fibrous cartilagenous exterior (annulous fibrosis) of an intervertebral disc fails and the soft inside (nucleus pulposis) comes out and possibly pushes on a spinal nerve and causes neuropathic pain.

The good news is that the vast majority of herniated discs are asymptomatic and resolve by themselves. The majority of symptomatic herniated discs also resolve by themselves over a few months. In the U.S., there used to be papain treatments to dissolve the bulging nucleus pulposis, but that treatment has been proven in medical literature to be harmful to the spine. This treatment, however, is still used in Canada.

The best treatment for a herniated disc is initially non-invasive management. This involves taking daily non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the inflammation on the bulging disc. This in turn promotes the resolution of the disc herniation. A typical treatment is either Ibuprofen 600 mg four times a day or Ibuprofen 800 mg three times a day. This treatment is not appropriate for any person who has a history of stomach or duodenal ulcers as NSAID medications can cause a recurrence in ulcers. For patients who have gastric distress from high dose Ibuprofen, some find relief in using Pepcid daily. The key is to use this high dose of Ibuprofen. A lower dose (200 mg, 400 mg) only helps pain, but is not anti-inflammatory. The higher dose is necessary. 800 mg is the equivalent of taking four over the counter Advils in one shot.

In addition to the NSAID treatment, certain physical therapy exercises will help the pain and promote the healing of the damaged disc. If a disc does NOT resolve by itself and the symptoms do not go away, the next step is surgery. The surgical approach depends very much on the location of the slipped disc and the inidividual patient. In many cases the operation is a minimally invasive approach called a microdiscectomy.

Some people find help with chiropractors and other alternative treatments. However, almost all of these treatments have no effect other than a good placebo effect (which certainly can help people feel better). The medical literature is fairly clear that most herniated discs self-resolve, so with or without treatment, it is going to get better.

If you have any more questions about your slipped disc, please let me know. This is the field of medicine that I specialize in and also the field in which I do academic research. Back pain sucks hard..... hope it gets better soon.

Dont ignore any back problems. I had two slipped disks that I ignored for a couple years... I regret it. You need a chiro to 'slip them back' It hurts but it needs to be done. Any back problem should not be ignored.

Now that's what I wanted to hear!! lol

Thanks for the advice all- I am going to make sure to take care of this now, one way or another.

Adrenaline, thanks for the detailed post! My slipped disc is in the T12 lumbar, which is apparently a really common spot. It's done this before, and it did slip back in (or else I just stopped noticing it for about 2 years), but the fact that it's out again has me worried.

How long would you suggest treating it with ibuprofen before I go to see someone to get something done to it? I'll be seeing an Alexander technique practitioner (basically a posture coach) in the meantime, but I don't want to wait until it's too late.

    Thanks again-

I mentioned this in another thread but I should probably state it again. Be very careful taking ipuprofen... You cant stay on it to long because it can and will cause liver damage. And damage to your stomache(ie ulcers) a lot of people dont realise it and pop the stuff like crazy. Im just passing on the warning my doctors gave me when I was on it. There is herbel remidies out there that act the same but without the damage.

I had a slipped disc when I was 9. The pain was terrible but the Dr gave me pain medication ot take and said to leave it and it will eventually slid back into place. It did just that a week later.
