Default How important are the lyrics?

I'm going through all of my CD's, trying to put stuff together, and I keep finding songs that have great music, but the lyrics are depressing, too "I want to marry you", etc. I haven't started dancing yet, but I was told that the DJ at the club where I'll be working is fairly cool about letting dancers bring stuff in. I was also told that I could use pretty much anything I wanted, except for songs that were racially offensive, degrading to women, or too violent.

So I mean, obviously the goal is to have the customer pay attention to YOU, not necessarily the song, but are there types of lyrics that will really just kill your customer's energy?

I never pay attention to lyrics when I play songs. Obviously I stay away from songs that contain cursing, or lyrics that are racially offensive, or degrading. Otherwise, if the beat is steady, rhythmic, and danceable...that's alll that matters. I think, it's the really slooooooow songs that depress customers and take the energy out of the room.

Yep, no slow songs, and pick upbeat music.........I do listen to lyrics but a lot of people don't.....what are some songs you have imagined yourself dancing to onstage?

Some songs on the CD I've been practicing to:

    Tainted Love: Marilyn Manson
    Get A Grip: Aerosmith
The Power is Mine: Lords of Acid
Act Nice and Gentle: The Black Keys
    Ring My Bell: Anita Ward
    Fat Bottom Girls: Queen
    Twentieth Century Fox: The Doors
    Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps: Cake

    What do you think?

No slow songs... although I do have a funny story to tell...

I had a really cool DJ at the club I worked at and I trusted him with music, he just "knew" what would work for me and what wouldn't.... so he tells me that he's going to put me up to some older 80's stuff.. the last song he accidentally qued the wrong song.. I'm up on stage dancing to "One is the lonliest number that you'll ever see".. I started busting a gut!!!!

So the GM comes to the booth and says, "What the hell are you doing? I've got hockey players bawling their eyes out and customers crying in their beer!"....

SO no... no depressing slow songs.... LOLLOL.... nothing like cheese dick hair band songs and then that one to end it all...

    ROTFLMAO!

Lil game of lyrics fill in the blanks, how many can you get?.....

1."let me lick you up and down,
    till you say stop"
    song title***** **

2."Blame it all on my roots,* ****** ** ** *****,and ruined your black tie affair.

3.I want to fuck you like an ________

    4."your once,twice,three times a _____

I remember back in the day,I used to run a dj company that did weddings.
    (fuckabridebtw)

The song "end of the road"by boyz to men was the #1 song of all time, longest running #1 song on billboard or something like that.
anyways,it was a song about breaking up if you have not heard it or could not tell by the title.

All the brides wanted that song as thier first dance for over a year.

    fuckin horrible!

No matter how much i pleaded with them to no avail, many still did it anyways.

It was the hottest song of the day.

To some people the words matter,to others they could care less.

    BTW you sick fucks.......

If ya ever dirty danced with your SO to the song Three times a LADY,you should seek personal help ya twisted pervs!!!!!LOLOLOLOL
Its a song Lionel Ritchie wrote for his mother, about his mother, and only for his mother!

    Im sorry.

    <hangs head in shame>

    I ruinteded it fer ya.

    Let the cat out-o-the bag.

I know everytime i toss it on at a party, everyone wants to grab a SO and bump belt buckles on the dancefloor, or bump uglys behind closed doors.

    But im sorry guys....

    Its a mothers day song.

(most guys over 30 are probably feeling really dirty right now and need to be excused so they can shower and delouse)

You can only dance with your mother during that song for the words to fit(or your dommi)

Words do matter in songs IMO,even if they are not there.

The Kingsman's "louie Louie"set the stage for this debate.(great music history to read if you wernt around)They mumbled nothing, and the world turned it into words.

Then came the ozzy records played backwards(or was it the kiss album,i forgot)

Either way,I played them all backwards,to include the pink floyds and greatful dead, fuckin nothing, and i was stoned enough to hear it dammit!

So I would say I guess,in my opinion, words really dont matter one way or the other, frontwards or backwards to the general public.

to me they do,but thats only cause as a dj,i gotta listen.

Its all about the response the song gets,in peoples own words.

Here's another song whilst up-beat I would highly recommend NOT dancing to:

    U.G.L.Y

"U.G.L.Y .. you ain't go no alabi... you ugly.. hey hey... you ugly"

Plus I won't dance to "Who let the dogs out" just because its annoying and well... how is it sexy or anything at all ?

One of our DJ's plays "who let the dogs out" when he announces a special. It cracks me up, but all the girls start complaining.

    How important are the lyrics?

Hmmm... that might depend on your club...

But for anything less than a showclub, consider this:

I used to make *bank* doing "Blasphemous Rumours" by Depeche Mode... and that song has possibly the most depressing lyrics ever written...

I wouldn't advise using anything depressing on a routine basis, but it isn't always a crowd-killer. Some guys couldn't care less if you played Beethoven's Fifth, as long as your clothes come off.
