    Default Tanning question

Hey my felloe newbies...haven't posted in a while, was teaching belly dancing at a summer camp.
Question: I know that that a tan vastly improves the way you look naked, but skin cancer runs in my family so I would rather not use a tanning bed. I'm experimenting with various fake tan creams and gels. I've tried Neutrogena tanning foam that worked already but it was awfully light. Any reccommendations?

Tried out a new (to me) self tanner called "Whipped Chocolate", it gave me a nice golden tan and smells great!! So many smell funky after a while, this one actually smells like chocolate. Got it at Sally's Beauty supply for 10 bucks.

There's a whole line of products just for this called "Fake Bake" Personally I have never tried it - but I have heard from co-workers that have and they like it a lot.

Jergens Natural Glow is the cheapest product I know of that has the stuff which prevents streaks and uneven color. Something-cellulose, I think.

Since I've started stripping a few weeks ago, I've been struggling with different self tanners to give me color instead of going to the tanning salon. Trying to avoid the side effects of tanning a all cost if possible. Here are my experiences so far.

Neutrogena foam medium with bronzer. This was my first attempt and is a good product. When applied in circular motion, it's quite easy to have a perfectly streak free and even distribution. Bronzer gave an immediate nice deep tan color but as all bronzers do, it rinses right off with water. The self tanner left me with a nice light/medium color and had effectively moved me from pasty white to a healthy light colored tone. The color lasted but two days. 13.99$ / 4 to 5 applications for me.

Neutrogena lotion deep. I wasn't much impressed with the level of color considering this was labeled as "deep". It looked the same as the results I had gotten from the medium foam. I reapplied the next day and then got a nice result with color. Not orangey and lasted a good 3-4 days. I like this one as it absorbed and dried very quickly letting you get dressed soon after application. For those looking for deeper color, I find 2 applications of this product a few hours apart to work quite well. 13.99$ / 4 applications for me.

Coppertone deep lotion with vanishing tint. Got pretty much the same results as with the neutrogena deep lotion. One application gave a light/medium color, two gave a perfect color. Product goes on well and dries quickly. Bronzer is nice and always helpful with application. Lasted a good 3-4 days. 8.99$ / 4 to 5 applications.

L'Oreal Sublime Bronze deep gelee. I'm just starting to test this one having tried it only once so far. My first experience had mixed results and some that better be resolved with my next try for me to recommend this product to anyone. First the product is more on the liquidy side of gel consistency so it's very easy to squeeze too much out at once, drip some all over and make a mess. It applies very well and evenly but I was quite surprised and dissapointed by it's absorbancy factor and drying time. It claims to be quick dry but I found it to be quite to contrary and I have very very dry skin, it absorbs vaseline like a sponge. It was quite strange as my skin "felt" dry after a couple of minutes but when I touched it, it felt greasy. I was greasy well over an hour after application and I had applied a thin coat! I finally put on pyjamas an hour and a half later and they stuck to me all over.... Not a very nice feeling... Color results: surprising! this product is the one that has given me the most color for one application so far so it does score points with that. Having said that, it also demands the most care for areas that tend to darken more than others like hands and feet. Mine were significantly darker in those areas than the rest of my body I will report more on this product once I have given it another go in a day or two to give my final opinions. I hate the greasy feel factor but the color is quite nice, hopefully modifying some application details will help make this product usable to me. Third day since application and color is still quite nice 15.99$ / 3 to 4 applications.

I haven't tried this one myself but have read great reviews of it online. Banana Boat's deep self tanning lotion. Supposedly gives great color, absorbs nicely and smells great. I haven't been able to find it in my neck of the woods yet though... Also quoted to be reasonably priced.

My conclusion thus far with the products I've tried is that I'll most likely stick to the Coppertone or Neutrogena lotions. They've given me the best results so far and the Coppertone one is very reasonably priced which is an important factor considering that this will be a regular purchase.

    General self-tanning observation notes:

    - If you are just starting with self tanners, try those with a bronzer first. The bronzers help you see where you've applied and help you get an even streak free color.

    - If your skin is on the dry side, go for lotions and gels instead of mousses and sprays, they seem to apply and absorb better. If your skin is on the oilier side, mousses and sprays are said to be better suited for you.

    - Remember that bronzers are just a tint that's added to the lotion to temporarily add color to help the application process and give you an immediate color. These bronzers always rinse off easily and may rub off on light clothing especially while sweating. Definitely a good idea to shower the bronzer off before work so it doesn't rub off on your outfits or custy's clothes (for contact dances).

    - Once you've applied a self tanner, do not get wet or exercise and sweat within at least 4 hours. If not, the product will not have had enough time to absorb and do it's work. More time is better. My suggestion (and what works best for me with self-tanning and work) is to self tan at night before bed, then you can exercise and shower the next day before your shift. That way you have a nice color for work and get rid of the unpleasant smell of the self-tanner.

    - Before applying your self tanner, be sure to protect certain areas that are known to absorb the product more by applying lotion first. Areas to watch for: feet (sole, heel and toes), knees (especially just below the knee), hands (palms, fingers and knuckles), other areas like dry patches of skin. Apply some regular body lotion to these areas in order to avoid unpleasant darker spots that will stand out.

    - My best trick so far to avoid really dark palms, hands and fingers is to wear some tight fitted medical gloves (there are some non-latex available for those with allergies. These can be found for cheap at your drugstore, here I get a box of 100 for 8.99$. I wear the gloves to apply the self tanner all over then when all is done I remove them and use a latex makeup sponge to paint the self tanner on the top of my hands and very lightly my fingers. Be sure to have lotioned your well hands first anyways, for some reason hands tend to absorb the most product than anywhere else on the body!

    - When applying self tanner to the face and neck area, don't forget to do your ears and behind them too, especially if you pull up your hair. After I've done my face, I just use what's left on my fingers to give them a quick once over.

Well that's all I can think of for now, hope this info is helpful to someone! I'll update later when I have more self-tanner product experiences and reviews to share.
