Angry 2 fast makes me 2 furious!

For all the animal lovers out there...remember that fall is the 'gathering' time for all our animal buddies, so they tend to wander on the roads more during this time of year.

PLEASE if you drive, know anyone who drives anywhere, watch your speeds! Nothing puts a damper on a great mood like seeing some poor casualty of humans doing on the roadway. I am sure I am not alone on this note, so tell others to try to be courtious of our little critters! I live near a "backroad" where the speed limit is 45--you'll see some idiot blazing down the road at 60mph!!! I witness many (too damn many) casualties of human neglect on my way to and from work...it will bring me to tears...very sad and preventable!

SOOOO PLEASE help me to help our little 'hidden' friends from being squished and watch the speeding, and tell your close custys too--everyone will thank you, especially me! THANK YOU * in advance*

This will make you feel better- millions of Californians are driving much slower & less overall because our frigging gasoline is three bucks a gallon. I just got back from running errands and I never broke 50 MPH.
I'd also like to mention I almost hit a buck deer on Highway 101 but swerved in time. I was driving a Geo Metro- it would have been a bad scene for us. Some people avoid hitting critters for selfish reasons, like wanting to live. "The world is big enough for the two of us"- Albert Schweitzer.

i never go any faster than 5 above on the highway. i don't get speeding... unless it's an emergency. if you leave early enough you don't have to speed. i ran over an already dead animal the other. i usually swerve, but i couldn't tell what it was until it was too late. and i still feel bad.

I think alot of people hit the animals on purpose . I only say that for two reason , one is because alot of people ( men ) say they do and second it always struck me kinda odd that alot of the animals are quite squished far off the side of the road . Personnally I have never accidently driven over the white line and hit a raccoon ???? but thats just me ...

Maybe I have nice friends, but I have never heard a guy say he hits animals on purpose. Not even a drunk guy.

How do squished animals end up far off the side of the road? They get hit, then hit again when they're dead. Roads have crowns; they're higher in the middle. Rain makes the surface slippery. Glancing blows push the carcass to the side.

Now for the BIG mystery: why do raccoons get hit on the other side of the white line? Maybe by cars driving the other way.

Most "squished" animals I see (usually squirrels, coons, and the occasional cat) are in the middle of the road. The larger "hit" animals (usually deer, coyotes, and the occasional dog) end up on the side because they more likely were hit by the grill than the tires, and the force of the impact pushed them there. Either that or because they were moved. You should see how far a human can fly when struck by a car (not that I would know from either perspective).

Strange this topic came up because yesterday, I saw the most brazen squirrel jump out in the middle of a main throughfare and just stop. I had to honk at him twice to get him to skedaddle.

Me neither. I have no doubt that someone has hit an animal on purpose, but I don't think it's a common thing.

Also, when roads are being cleaned, the animals are frequently pushed to the side for someone else to collect and (frequently) render and put into low quality dog food. It's gross, but the dogs don't seem to mind and it is definitely more cost effective than cremating all the roadkill.

Not to mention possums, who fake left and right, then dive at one of your front wheels. It's like they've already written the suicide note.

If you think possum and other yellow line yummies are too good to end up in dog food, get a copy of Buck Peterson's The Original Road Kill Cookbook.

One of the many things I loved when me and my ex were stationed on Gitmo, was to see how many idiots got their tires popped by running over land crabs. These things were HUGE. And, late at night, especially after it rained... They'd be all over the roads, just hanging out. As soon as a car's headlights hit them, they'd stick their claws straight up in the air. Guess they figured that if they were going down, they were taking that person's tires with them.

It was heartbreaking however, to see all the iguanas who were victims to either drunk drivers, or just idiots who weren't paying attention in general. These iguanas weren't small by any definition (5-6 ft. long), and they were free to roam the entire base. They got hit more than stray dogs.

I couldn't agree more, though. People need to pay attention. I've seen idiots speed through residential areas, where children were playing as well as animals. Gods help the morons that try speeding on my street.

You gotta be stupid to hit an animal on purpose. For the mere fact of the possibility of damaging your vehicle.

LOL Mast! When I clicked on it I was SURE it was going to a rant about some doofus guy trying to hump way to fast. LOL

But, I have heard a few guys say they hit animals on purpose. And judging by the number of assholes I've witnessed or heard telling about picking on/torturing other animals, I'd say there's more than a few jerkwads out there who'll run over a critter for sport

Thanks miss Rhiannon! It isn't a sex topic (lmao!) ...sorry. Oh, that story was hysterical! That's kinda the response I expected...I however didn't fathom the range of discussion for 'roadkill' --omg-- whew. I just dislike blatent disregard for life, and the scavengers will do just fine w/o the intervention of some calous idiots tires. Thanks to all ya'll that it may have got you to think about driving technique...*disclaimer* I do NOT mean sacrifice your life/friends/childs life for some poor animal that was in the wrong place at the wrong time!

    thank you--Justine

Sportswriter , Thanks for mocking me I sent you an email to tell you what else I think ...

For the rest of you who disagreed with me ..

Two weeks ago I drove past a cat/kitten that was over the white ( where normal people do not drive ) and this poor thing had been hit/squished , its hind quarters were completely flattened onto the ground . I do not see how this animal who couldn't do more than writh in agony could have moved off to the side of the road after it had been hit , which leaves me to only believe that someone swerved off the side of the road to hit this animal . My own cat was hit a year ago and the person who hit my cat keep going , never slowing down or anything and 3 of the cars who where behind him stopped and pulled over to help the cat and to find its owners . They all agreed that it looked like the driver hit the cat on purpose . I have also been in cars with people ( men ) that have swerved to avoid an animal and when I thanked them ( this has happened 2x's ) they admitted that they had only done so because they know how much I love animals .......

I wasn't saying what I posted to be a jerk and I am clearly not a stupid or sheltered person . I am also not the kind of person who thinks this is kool . I find it disturbing but to think that there are people out there who would not do something like that on purpose is beyond naive .

It was elk tonight, two of them.... one thing to remember is that if you see one animal, slow WAY down because chances are there is another that just might jump in front of your car... which is just what happened... that elk could almost have flattened my car almost as much as the moose...

Animal lovers, you should read "Sick Puppy" by Carl Hiassen. It's a novel about a environmentalist with an anger control problem- he beats people for hurting animals or Nature.
Anyone who makes a habit out of swerving TO hit animals will learn a hard lesson someday- a tire can rupture from a high-speed swerve onto the edge of the road. I wish I could be a fly on the wall at that scene.

Where I live, most white lines mark the middle of the road. Most of the roadkill I've seen has been within 5-6 feet of those white lines. I offered an obvious explanation (I hope you sent doc a PM, too).

You later clarified your original comment to mean only the lines marking the shoulders of a road (typically a major state road). I rarely see roadkill there, and I don't think you should assume that animals on the far side of that line were hit on purpose. Some of your anger may be misdirected and unnecessary.

I'm sorry that your cat escaped and was killed on a road. I'm sorry you know men who would hit animals on purpose. Good drivers know how dangerous it is to swerve on a road and risk losing tire adhesion, so I don't think the two men who swerved for your sake would hit animals on purpose.

If it's any consolation to you, I've hit one squirrel lifetime and he ran away. I was test driving a new car with a Pakistani "sales counselor" in the passenger seat. I said, "Oh man, I can't buy this car." He looked at me and said, "Don't worry, it was meant to be." I didn't buy the line or the car.

PS: Thanks for the PM, bostondancer. I wrote one back, but you don't accept them.
