Very good article about a movie in production about the Zodiac killer of Northern California, and the pernicious effects of his reign of terror.

Some questions I have, opinions are welcome:

    1) Do you think he evaded capture due to the historically permissive nature of San Francisco? In that people were less likely to suspect a solitary male of being up to no good....versus the public response to the Son of Sam killer in Brooklyn, New York (hysteria, vigilance)? (This is not a homophobic statement. Vagrancy is tolerated in SF- see Willie Brown's famous comment about painting the homeless yellow and using them as speed bumps.)

    2) Do you think he had accomplices?

    3) If he is still alive, do you think he will pull a Dennis Rader (BTK Killer) -like act and bumble into getting apprehended? It seems the Zodiac revelled in public attention and inducing fear.

Damn.. I'll never understand why they have to make movies about serial killers. It gives them more attention than they're worth.

Well, I feel sick when I think about serial killers, but I feel the public needs to be educated that such inidivduals exist and frankly, the law is unable to help stop them until way too late (EX: Zodiac, Cary Stayner, etc.)
I don't understand being fascinated by serial killers, but if one is educated about them, it is illuminating.

I did a research paper on serial killers for one of my English classes, and it was a VERY strange topic (to say the least). I got totally creeped out about it, but I did learn an awful lot. I only picked it because it was a Psychology related topic and I think we had to pick one that involved our major. Very strange people, though...*shudder*

Oh, no.. I know there are a ton of movies out already. That was part of what I was saying, I guess. How many movies do we really need about these scumbags? One is fine, I can see the point in that. But, damn.

    It's sick that's for sure.

I already seen many clips on the Zodiak killer on A&E once.

I had this thing about reading about them. It started back in the late 70's, and i have not stopped yet!

I always thought that if i learned what made them tick, i would have a better chance of survival...strange huh?

I returned a game to Blockbuster today, and I noticed on the new releases wall there was a dvd called "Zodiac". I picked it up and perused it briefly, yep....about the Zodiac Killer. I can't argue... call it anything you like, but the psychology of these men is fascinating. I am currently reading a fairly horrible book that no one ever apparently felt the need to proof read, but it's about Ted Bundy. I was raised in Florida and my mom is from Utah, so there IS a wee bit of a connection there. To date, the most interesting book I have read on this subject is called "Lustmord:The writings and artifacts of killers". It's nothing but actual correspondence and journal entries, without some corny author/investigator getting involved and putting their spin on it.

Oh I definitely think that the ones out are fascinating. Years ago, I set it in my mind that I wanted to be a profiler, because I am definitely interested in finding out what makes these freaks tick. I just don't think we need to have numerous versions, but eh.

Has anyone noticed that mostly all serial killers are described as "Quiet, never got into trouble, kept to themselves."? I think the only one not described like that in recent history is BTK. They describe him as completely arrogant, and always looking to start trouble.

Yea Rhi. And how many have wives gf's and a family too! Geez.

I read in Time mag. a year ago about the first serial killer on record, was 1800's!!!!

    He was a brutal fuck.

I read about so many of them, i lost track.

If anyone remembers there was one who had all the females in his cellar, chained, raped them over and over to get them pregnant. If one chick got caught trying to get free or talking he would kill her. He had many big dogs the book said, and fed the bones of these ladies to the dogs.

Also he chose one girl he kidnapped and took her out to McDonalds. He drove a Caddy.
I am not sure if this girl he chose to be a friend ever turned him in, or the smell or something got him.

There was alot going on in this book with him. I just can't remember his name or much else, i read so many. But would like to read this one again.
