    First Salon Facial??

Hey girls! I've never gone in for a salon facial before (in home facials always worked for me ) I was wondering soem things:

    What kinds are there?

    Are they expensive?

    Do they really help?

I have some oil problems, some blackheads and basically dull skin. I'd like to help those things and gain some anti-aging benefits too. I'm also aware of the gross junk that settles on your skin from work. I know there are some facial junkies out there who will be glad to have another join them...LOL!

Once you start, you'll be hooked! I love them. I get a 50 minute facial which includes steaming, pore vaccuming, exfoliation and massage for $90. I do this once a month and usually get a full body massage and a soak in the mineral pool that day as well, if I have the time.

You definitely need to treat yourself well. This is a good step. If you ever get the chance, try a body wrap. They buff you and apply mud then wrap you in plastic for a few minutes. You feel like a Hershey's Kiss, LOL! But your skin is glowing afterwards.

Good luck and let us know how you liked it!

If you have them done regularly, once every month, facials do help. There are many kinds of facials at many price ranges. One of the cheapest options is to go to a Chinese salon if you live in an urban area.

What's pore vacuuming? is that the same as extraction? I had a facial extraction, but I don't remember anything but a metal implement that didn't get that much.

I've never been but I gave my boyfriend one for Christmas. (Aren't I nice?)

His was about an hour and a half for $65 for extraction, exfoliation, hydration, mask and a hands/feet/neck massage.

I've never had one but I had a friend who used to get them regularly. She said they helped her TMJ and were cheaper than paying a physical therapist for a session for her jaw. I recently tried Oil of Olay chemical peel and I like it. I've only used it twice so far so I don't know how much it'll do to even out my complexion but it makes my skin feel really smooth and nice after I use it. After reading this thread though a facial sounds like something I might have to try.

what's special about a salon facial versus a home facial is that the salon uses proffesional products! Proffesional products have less junky useless ingredients, a higher and stronger concentration of active ingredients, and it's not expired (products sit at the drug store warehouse for years before it's put on the shelves)

to have a facial every 3-4 weeks is ideal

pore vacuuming is similar to extractions only it doesn't hurt. There's a machine that you connect a tiny tube to and the machine creates a suction through this tube, which is placed in the skin and used like a vacuum.

^^^so does that mean the vacuum gets out more from more pores? Because I had the extraction facial, and it didn't seem like she got out much from blackheads or whiteheads.
Or is the vacuum as limited as the extractor, save the fact that it doesn't hurt?

forget about getting facials at a salon. go to a dermatologist for the best advice on skin care. there was a news report on facials (20/20 or 48 Hours maybe?), and they came to the conclusion that there is no scientific evidence that facials, body wraps, and all of that other expensive crap does any good for your skin.

    Fancygirl:

the vacuum is faster, therefore the time alotted to extractions (usually 5 minutes) is spent more efficiently

But beware of poorly trained estheticians because improper use of the vaccuum can lead to major bruising and redness

my first facial had "natural" ingredients and was done in a nail salon. really relaxing...i could smell the papaya, mango, and honey in the mask. it cost 60 bucks or so, and i got a facial and neck massage at the same time. after, my skin was softer. i only do this once or twice a year....i prefer to spend the $$ on an occassional massage, and my disposable income is low right now...thus no room for facials. would do it again though.

in order to do any kind of extractions - vaccuum, loop tool, using fingers, whatever, - you MUST soften the skin to open the pores. You can do this by steaming for at least 15 minutes.

You can stand over a pot of boiling water, or have a hot shower, or use a steam room, or you can buy a steamer - Avon sells one, you can also get them from beauty supply stores

or you can apply hot, wet towels for 15 minutes
