    Default Questions...

    Greetings!

I've finally decided to just go for it. I'm going back to school for a master's in opera performance, and I definitely need a way to finance this adventure without working 100 hours a week I'm kind of wary of getting too involved in the whole scene...hopefully I can keep it in perspective; it's a way to make $ so I can continue to sing and study, no more, no less.

So...is it best to go for an amateur night and then talk to the management and try to nail a job, or is it more likely you'll be hired by asking for an audition? or does it even matter?

Also...I'm Rumanian, so I'm not exactly the typical tall blond American sex symbol. I have an accent, pale skin and dark hair. Will that count against me, or can I use it to my advantage, perhaps?

Where are some good places to find cheap but decent-looking costume pieces online? (I've heard ebay for shoes, but I didn't find all that much when I looked.) I'm thinking to start I'll get one pair of shoes, one tube dress...already have plenty of g-strings...though I'm not really sure of what to wear on top. Both of the clubs I visited had most of the dancers wearing tube dresses and no bra, but I'm not sure...I'm thinking I should maybe do a bra and wrap skirt when I audition.

Finally...and with a sincere apology for asking so many questions...how did those of you that landed jobs learn to dance? I've been taking ballet for six years, and I've been to clubs before and seen dancers at work, but I feel like I'd still be winging it and making things up as I go.

You're a Rumanian opera singer with pale skin, dark hair, a sexy foreign accent, and 6 years of ballet experience - and you wonder if you can dance? Are you kidding? You'll clean the place out. Good luck!

I get my shoes at Maya in Hollywood. If you're not in the L.A. area, Maya also has a website: . Her shoes are very good quality and very reasonably priced.

Exactly. I bet you will do beautifully.

I can't help you on most of your questions as I'm not a dancer. But for the last one... Pick a few songs that you like, and find a mirror (probably full-body length), and dance there. Practice. You've seen the moves at the clubs, just imitate them and find your own style. In front a mirror, you can come up with a dance routine that really works for you. If you are able to pick your own music for auditioning, you can use the songs that you've practiced too. At the very least, you will condition your body into feeling that these moves are natural. That way, you won't freeze on stage. You'll body will know what to do. But hey, it's okay to wing it and make things up as you go along. Whatever works for you. ^_^

I'm sure you'll do great with all that ballet experience. And guys like accents and dark hair a lot.

Depends on the club. Some only hire after they've seen you in an amateur competition that's held at their club... others have you audition... whereas others still don't really care.. just fill out the paperwork and you're good to go. Go into the clubs that you want to possibly work within and inquire with the dancers there.

Or go straight to the manager.

Also...I'm Rumanian, so I'm not exactly the typical tall blond American sex symbol. I have an accent, pale skin and dark hair. Will that count against me, or can I use it to my advantage, perhaps?
I take it by this question that you have NOT been inside an actual strip club by chance? Also, I take it that you have NOT bothered to even look at the gallery photos of all of us?

You need to visit a few clubs my dear. You will see first hand that not all of us are tall (I'm 5 foot), blonde (naturally brunette) with fake boobs (small b cup)!

*sigh* That's a HUGE myth you fell for there...

how did those of you that landed jobs learn to dance?
Actual dance ability really has no bearing on your earning potential. Dancing is the least of your worries. Besides wanting to know if you have actually visited quite a few strip clubs.... do you REALLY know what being an erotic/exotic dancer is all about? Have you read other threads in this folder and especially in the Dollar Den and Hustle Hut folders ?? I ask because if you had visited those folders you will find out quick that it isn't all about "dancing".... dancing is only a very small part of it.

Thank you to all of you that replied. I was a bit apprehensive after reading the post where the manager told a prospective stripper she had to tan before getting hired. ugh. I'm willing to change my appearance in a variety of ways, but that's one thing I will never do.

But I figure there's only one way to find out if I'm hire-able or not....I jsut have to go and do it.

Now, what would you suggest wearing to audition? I know I'll probably have to buy new shoes, as the ones I have been practicing in thus far are 4"...and some sort of outfit. But I have no idea what. Should I start the song in a bra and some sort of sarong or skirt, or what? I'd definitely fit the "innocent" stage persona best (people still think I'm 16 at age 21. bah), so I'm thinking a schoolgirl-type outfit of some sort....I suck at putting together things like this.

And I don't want to spend a lot on a bunch of crap that will be useless if I can't get hired anywhere.

    Suggestions?
