Default Think twice before using Walmart film dept.

Jarvis had assigned her senior civics and economics class “to take photographs to illustrate their rights in the Bill of Rights,” she says. One student “had taken a photo of George Bush out of a magazine and tacked the picture to a wall with a red thumb tack through his head. Then he made a thumb’s down sign with his own hand next to the President’s picture, and he had a photo taken of that, and he pasted it on a poster.”

According to Jarvis, the student, who remains anonymous, was just doing his assignment, illustrating the right to dissent.

But over at the Kitty Hawk Wal-Mart, where the student took his film to be developed, this right is evidently suspect.

An employee in that Wal-Mart photo department called the Kitty Hawk police on the student. And the Kitty Hawk police turned the matter over to the Secret Service.

On Tuesday, September 20, the Secret Service came to Currituck High.“At 1:35, the student came to me and told me that the Secret Service had taken his poster,” Jarvis says. “I didn’t believe him at first. But they had come into my room when I wasn’t there and had taken his poster, which was in a stack with all the others.”

She says the student was upset.

“He was nervous, he was scared, and his parents were out of town on business,” says Jarvis.

She, too, had to talk to the Secret Service.

“Halfway through my afternoon class, the assistant principal got me out of class and took me to the office conference room,” she says. “Two men from the Secret Service were there. They asked me what I knew about the student. I told them he was a great kid, that he was in the homecoming court, and that he’d never been in any trouble.”

Then they got down to his poster.

“They asked me, didn’t I think that it was suspicious,” she recalls. “I said no, it was a Bill of Rights project!”

At the end of the meeting, they told her the incident “would be interpreted by the U.S. attorney, who would decide whether the student could be indicted,”

Indicted for what? Does that mean they are going to go after all the bumper stickers opposing Bush? Sheesh!
What if we made a t-shirt that says "I hate my president", would be indicted?
What a crappy system where they actually waste tax payers money on a poster.
Makes you wonder if that photo tech is just alittle paranoid himself. Let's ask him about the aliens that probed him the other night..

Look, you guys don't realize what kind of country you are living in these days do you?

There are a lot of people out there who's buttons are getting pushed about this kind of shit and the democrats want yank off about the Vietnam War and like the KKK still rules the south.

I stay away from Walmart as far as possible. Don't like the junk they sell. Don't like the way they treat their employees. Don't like the way they treat their vendors. Don't like Walmert at all.

^^^^ I did like the episode that South Park did on Walmart...
I don't shop ther much myself, they are WAY too far away from where I live. Target is my buddy. Plus, I would never use Walmart as my photo techs, they don't let you print nekkid pics, that's downright mean!

They censor their magazines and forget about buying a CD with explicit lyrics there.

It is a shame they are quickly becoming one of three major stores out there.

Those who want to continue might have to turn into seedy "adult" shops - like "adult" music stores with explicit lyrics... etc. (Like there are any CD shops around anymore.)

We actually have a cd shop in town (pretty popular one too), but I can see where you are heading.
It IS sad that some artists have to censor their music and creativity BEFORE they even print the CD. I never buy cds from Walmart for that reason alone. I always worry that it might have been censored without my knowing it. Some songs just don't sound right without the F word.

Walmart bought Target -- to cater to the people who dislike Walmart... I've always loved Target but have had to wean myself off of them post WallyWorld takeover.

CostCo rules! They treat their employees like human beings.

I wouldn't develop anything at any chain anymore, not after personally working at a Kinko's when I was 19 and knowing how we liked to treat and mock private property . . .

In fairness, photo development policies regarding refusals/reporting of certain types of content are not new and certainly not exclusive to WalMart. Before the days of affordable digital cameras I used to have to work with film development and scanning for all of my pay website photo updates, so I can tell you firsthand that lots of businesses which offered photo developing services had 'attitudes' about nude/adult content.

When did Walmart buy Target? I don't recall that happening. I know there were a lot of rumors going around, but as far as I know, that's all they were.

Anyhoo.. Melonie's dead on. And honestly.. If people want to keep their photos safe and private.. They can always get a printer dock and print them out right at home.. Like I do.

^^^^ I really do like Target... I guess I'll have to reconcider my choices.. Dollar General just doens't have that flair.
As for Costco, I have a few friends that work there and agree that they are taken care of.

It doesn't seem right to censor film, though. Who is Walmart to say what is decent and what isn't? I guess there is a fine line between abuse in photos and just plain fun (talking about child porn) but other than that, what is there REALLY for them to be scouting for?
Someone with a bong can have their photos printed, and PLENTY of underage drinking, but show dislike for a president and it's a criminal offense. What a waste.

I just did a Google search for any sort of Wal-Mart buyout of Target. Not a single one is substantial. Innuendo and babble, but no concrete evidence. Seriously, that would have been front page news.

Oh, and to keep it on topic, if this story is true, it's ridiculous. However....maybe I am entirely too cynical, but nothing our government does would surprise me.

Oh, and pre-digital prints, I used one of those photolabs from the back of the local independent weekly. Cheap, no questions asked.

Heh.. No doubt, Chris. And I think I would've heard something from my old co-workers who are still suffering at good ole Tar-Ghetto's overnight shift. So rest assured people.. Target and Walmart are still in competition for your dollars, separately.

I esspecially find it ridiculous when the authorities are called in by these photolabs to harass, and sometimes arrest people who wanted pictures developed of their kids innocently taking a bath.

was this kid middle eastern and his parents were away on business in Saudi Arabia???
Did this kid attend Columbine high??

Is the phone number to the American secret service posted next to the film developing machine??

Or do employees of walmart have that number memorized for cases just like this.

Maybe, just maybe,a minimum wage walmart employee told the manager on duty, the manager called the sherrif,or local police department, then THEY called the secret service,is closer to what i would guess.(and im sure the FBI is in there somewhere and got a call lol)

Then i would ask,why the employee, the manager on duty, then the local cops, would all feel the need to call the secret service??

This story seems to be missing some pieces,it just sounds to crazy for me,i smell a rat.

    But it makes good headlines.

Dont belive everything you read imo.

    Tough call imo.

I do think, under this situation,if there is aquestion,it should be asked.

OK, first of all it's the 21st century for cryin' out loud, buy a digital camera!

All kidding aside, nothing about what happened to this poor kid shocks me. George(Patriot Act) Bush and Wal(OT, you don't get no stinkin' OT) Mart represent much of what can go wrong in a democracy when the voting public dumbs itself down to the level of the politician who hires the best PR firm. Get off of your asses, read the newspaper, LOOK for the facts, they are out there, you just have to dig. We have three years to educate ourselves and make the right decisions before the next presidential election.

again, who knows? My guess is the employee who made the call is an extreemist who equates dissent of the President with treason.

All I have to say is that I'm glad I have a digital camera with a Photosmart printer.

Walmart sucks, anyways...so this is just one more thing to add to the pot.

I dont doubt that, but your missing my point FL.

    Something stinks.

Do you really think thats all it takes??
Just a phonecall to the secret service from a walmart photo tech??
Try calling, you know an agent doesnt answer the phone right??Its a secretary.

Dont you think the secret service would be really busy with all the anti Bush propaganda out there??kripes, they would have to patrol ALL schools from middle school up!

I dont doubt the employee set off the first red flair, but then it would have gone thru channels, then it would have been the secret service showing up at the school.

Those channels are full of professionals, who evidentially belived this was something that needs to be looked at,so the secret service was brought in.

My question is why did it get thru those channels ,why did those people feel the need to push it up the line to secret service??

    Something stinks.

    No ,I got your point.

And yes something stinks allright but it isn't the student, the teacher or the school.

It is the reaction that occured over a photograph with a teen showing a thumbs down next to a photo of the President.

Being as we are strippers, we should know better then anyone how subjective the first amendment is!

Wal Mart is a private business, and not a government organization, so if they wish to run their business a certian way, I'm fine with that. The thing that gets me about this article is that it went so far. Sheesh, all the local cops had to do was make a call to the student's school to determine that he was merely working on social studies project, and then they could have let it drop. What a waste of tax payer dollars!

Anyone who thinks we live in a "free" country, is sorely mistaken.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!
