Default People asking “what do you do?” Esp Landlords etc

Currently I am a web model/ entertainer & part time photographer for my Gfs adult promotions online that she dose on the side of dancing and I am doing , web claming, and may be start stripping again, and I was curious to as how allot of you guys respond to the question of “what do you do?”

For me I am perfectly cool with what I do, but don’t feel like I want to tell everyone I meet what I do as really unless we really knew each other well etc then it really isn’t any of their business, and really since my job is not who I am as a whole I don’t’ feel the need to tell everyone I fist meet, so often with acquaintances I will redirect the question after giving a vague answer possibly such as web consultant or internet sales that sells “all sorts of stuff”

I think how you answer the question of “what do you can depends on who is asking. Such as a banker or potential religious employer who might be rotationally religious just doesn’t’ need to be giving the opportunity to judge what I do as moral or not and have that count against me.

Think of some examples of different contexts or people asking this question and post what you would or have said before IE

1.friends 2. Family 3. Acquaintances 4. People you have just meet 5. Landlords 6. Potential employers 7. The bank and any other context you can think of.

How do generally handle the question.. With a story or just by being vague and redirecting and what specifically do you say….

I will give examples below how I tend to handle the question.

With friends who I have closer contact with I will tell them I work in the field of adult entertainment without going to much into specifics, and with acquaintances I will tend to tell them things I’m working towards currently when they ask what I do getting around what specific projects I’m doing at the time, and then redirect the attention back to them.

With people that I just have strictly some kind of business relationship or another I have a story about how I do many things and have a flexible schedule etc

LOL maybe I will pose as a private franchiser for quckstar and every time they bring it up I will start acting like I am trying to sell them in on my franchise or my soaps and products until they want no further details LOL. Time to get more creative.. It can be fun : )

Or I can just come up with a hobby on the side that I claim to do full time……

By the way is there other threads on this subject or strongly relating that anyone has a link to etc?

There's no option for telling the truth: I'm a stripper.

To most casual aquaintances I say that I am a student (true). I usually say something about saving well from when I was a teacher to imply that I don't need to work. If they persist then I am a waitress (regular restaurant kind--not in club). My parents think I work at Chevy's! Don't know why I picked this place, I've never even eaten there. A couple of weeks ago some young kids from across the street asked me what job I had. No choice but to lie there! Good luck mystery! Jenna

Hell, just tell them you are an investor. Let them figure out what you invest in - stocks, real estate, commodities etc. (You actually invest in your dancing talent.) If they want more, tell them you also are in a line of business that can make them more money and then ask do they want to go to a meeting to learn how this is a big opportunity for them? (If they guess Amway or Shaklee, smile and say, "I dont want you to start drawing conclusions until you learn what is in it for you.")

Seriously, they need some info to assure them you can pay your lease and maybe a credit check. How are you going to do that?
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

I don't lie anymore about it. WHen I first started dancing and my banks would comment on all the 1's I would lie and say I waitressed. It is none of their business. I also work in finance and make jewelry and other various crafts so when someone I don't feel I need to be honest with asks I say I invest the extra cash I make off my hobbies well. Most people that know me know that I have a regular job as well as entertain on the side for fun and extra money.

I don't mention it, since I have other stuff going on. If I feel the need to let them know, I don't say "stripper", I just shimmy my boobies back and forth. Everyone immediately seems to get it and can react accordingly. Something about saying, "I'm a stripper" is like a slap to the face of people sometimes, its weird.

I tell people that I work in a nightclub. After that it depends on who it is that is asking a question. Some would hear bartender and/or cocktail waitress, some would hear entertainer.I also say "model" which is true too.Nosy people won't hear much at all.

I tell them I'm a dancer without including the 'nude' or 'exotic' adjectives. Most of them, I think, get the point. In formal situations, like a loan application or whatever, I've never had them press for details, and I describe myself as self-employed, so usually they are more interested in verifying income than what clothes I do or don't wear to dance. In friendly conversation, I think they very quickly get the point that being a 'dancer' doesn't mean I work for the Joffrey Ballet.

i tell people flat out that I'm an exotic dancer.Life is far too short to be having to run around and cover stupid things up.If you lie it will someday come back to haunt you.

For the most part I have to say ditto to what Kristina posted. There have been occasions though when I have lied, usually it is to men who give me the creeps anyway. In those cases I say I work out of my home selling on Ebay.

It is fun to mess with bank tellers. Just tell them you pan handle w/ a cardboard sign near the freeway exit. This $400 I'm depositing was a pretty slow day, maybe better tommorrow. That'll get 'em every time.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

DONT tell them your an 'adult entertainer'. The first thing they will think is that your a porn star. The second thing they'll think is that your a prostitute.
Best to keep it real. If your an exotic dancer it sounds better than saying your a 'stripper' even though its the same thing.

I don't tell people what I do. People that I have just met that is. Frankly it's really non of their business and I don't care to have them sterotype me with one simple handshake.

People that matter in my life know and accept me as who and what I am. Other folks just don't matter that much.

I'm a layperson, and let me just tell you you're best off being honest with most people. If you don't want them to know, and they can't check up on you, just lie completely. Tell them you're a server or something. Euphamisms like "adult entertainer" will give you away and could also potentially backfire on you as was pointed out already.

i'm not ashamedof what i do but i recently had a landlord tell me i have to move because they dont want a stripper in the building. my lawyer says they cant discrminate on race or religion, but they can discriminate based on occupation. so looks like i'll have to lie on rental applications.

I hide that I’ve danced and do adult work, but that dose not mean that I’m ashamed of it. What it means for me is although I don’t concern myself too much withy what people think I also see the value of getting the best possible results for myself and in this game called life. If they aren’t close business partners or friends etc I see no need to give any impressions of who I am except those that get the best results. For example my landlord I don’t care what she thinks about what I do morally, but I want that apartment so I give her whatever impression works for me best to get the apartment, and our relationship is that I pay rent and it goes not further so it doesn’t truly matter.

I said potentially religious wit a R as in some one who could; be religious might discriminate. although that are religious people who are perfectly cool so not always of course.

In general it is best off to be honest, but I don't believe that means you have to be open and telling with people you hardly or don’t' really know or who are just light acquaintances etc.

my story would not backfire I make a habit of having plan A B and C laid out and can have my "references" easily validated with any "proof” that I need to apart my story there is always a way to support your stories with a good creative mind, and if people like you then they really don't care to look into you and gladly believe what you tell them.. they only look into you if you are a bad renter etc.

I have always said I dj at a night club. (because most djs work on only cash also, just like we do) or Ill say, I take place in the managment. Depends if your tight with your managment, or have a good reputation at your club, they will/should go along with it.

I almost always hid behind my being a student. The only time I was really truthful was when i was filing taxes (kind of had to tell the accountant what was going on for income source) and when I was in New Orleans (but I wasn't a student then, and figured that I didn't care what anyone there would think)
