    Default HELP! Sciattic Nerve!

Ok.. A few years back I had this problem, and I don't even know how it happened then. But this morning, I found it's acting up again. I know what it is, because I remember the pain all too well. I can't afford the week recovery time this time, because I have my In-Laws coming in on Monday. I want to get the house ready, and I also don't want this ruining the visit. We haven't seen them since we left RI in April.

Anyone know any quick fixes for this? Pain relief? Something.

I'm staring at Delia's toys on the floor right now and wincing because I can't bend over and pick them up. It KILLS me and my neat-freakishness.

Dan's going to massage my back later to see if that will do anything, but I'm not sure it will.

Anyone else ever had it? Like I said, I had it a few years back, and I just had to wait for it to go away. I can't put pressure on my left leg because the pain goes all the way from the tailbone to the tips of my toes. It's not fun.

    Help.

I think that's similar to what I have, except your slipped disc is pinching a nerve, and mine isn't (yet).

    http://www.stripperweb.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55722

A remedy I found to be so effective is to hang from monkeybars (or any horizontal bar). Just hang there, drop all your weight onto your arms (and off your back). It really helps me.

I did some more research, and herniated discs (and resulting sciatica) are so common basically because we have not yet fully evolved the strength in the lower back to support us being bipedal. Which means, obviously, that the best thing you can do is to learn to stand without putting pressure on your lower back. This is hard for women, and especially dancers, because a deep lordosis (swayback) is what you get when you put on heels and stick your butt out.

Which is all rambling, I know you want help NOW, lol...unfortunatley, I have nothing to offer. I was told by several people once when my rib popped out that alcohol is best for back pain. So there's an excuse for ya .

Oh yeah, my agent had severe sciatica (6 months off work, and he's a workaholic)- he had acupuncture, I think that was the only thing that worked.

    ((((Feel better))))

Here's a bunch of info on the sciatic nerve. If you scroll to the bottom of the page, it'll list a whole bunch of things to take to help combat the nerve pain.

You may want to pop some Ibuprofen (about 4 pills) when the pain gets to you. 4 pills of the over-the-counter Ibuprofen is about 800 milligrams, which is prescription strength. 4 pills every 4-6 hours should help keep the inflammation down. But, you really should go get it checked out as soon as you can. You also do not want to be taking the high dosage of Ibuprofen for too long.

Also, Evening Primrose Oil is also good for inflammation...

Hope you feel better soon! I pinched the sciatic nerve when I was in a car accident the day before Makayla was born. And, there was not much I could do since my body was full of prolactin and I was breast-feeding her. I went in for an adjustment, but it just wouldn't take. Finally, 3 months later, they did another adjustment and it took (prolactin takes about 3 months to get out of your system...).

So, I can feel your pain...take care of yourself!!

Been there and I seriously feel for you. Really the only recommendation is to stay off you feet. I know, your like, yeah right, with a toddler! Do your best though to keep the pressure off and the inflammation should go down. I live on Motrin when my sciatic acts up. You might also try one of those donut pillows to sit on to alleviate tension off the tailbone.

Thanks for all the information and help, girls. I'm going to try all of the methods and see if I can't at least get myself to be able to stand enough to do what I have to do. I'm just pissed because I want to make sure everything's nice before they get here. I still have a few boxes that I need to unpack too, which sucks. LOTS of bending involved there.

I just don't know how the hell I did this, that's what most frustrating. Well, okay, the pain isn't so good either.

Do you think that IcyHot might help a bit? Or that new Well-Patch? Dan's offered to run to the store after Delia's bath to see what he can get.

Scarlett.. I'm seriously going to try the monkey bars! I think we'll take Delia to the park tomorrow just so I can try that. Does it hurt real bad? I'm such a wussy when it comes to this type immobilizing pain. I hate feeling like I can't do what I need to get done. Ugh.

No...I felt a bit of a pop in my lower back, but it was a really good kind of pain. I'd suggest doing some light back muscle stretches first (like the one where you fold your upper arm over your boobs and turn your head), just in case the hanging isolates a muscle .

It hurt my grip more than anything- bring (grippy) gloves, maybe.

    Good luck!

Awesome! I'm glad it doesn't hurt that much, was just real scared of that. I'll do some stretches before hand, and I'll make sure I take the gloves. Thanks for the tip. Just thinking of doing that makes me feel like it could work.

Rhia- My step dad had this issue a few years back, and the only thing that helped him was acupuncture. He's never had any problems with it since; dunno how widely used it is, just thought I'd throw that in, too!

Oooh! Thanks Venus! I'm going to check that out right now.

I did go to the playground earlier, and hung upside down for a few minutes. It did help quite a bit. The pain's still there, but it's not as pronounced, and I don't have to limp so much, which is a good thing. Plus, I'm all doped up on Ibuprofen (heh). You were right about the "good" pain, Scarlett.

I think I'll be able to function enough to get what I need done today. I'm still trying to figure out how I upset the nerve though. Ugh.

    Thanks again, Everyone!
