Default What will happen if I quit caffine?

I have been wondering, what are the benefits of quitting all caffine? (Currently drinking 2-3 cups of tea daily, no coffee or sodas).

It seems to me that my NL lines are a little deeper and my cheeks are looking a little saggier since I started adding in that 3rd cup of tea daily, and I am wondering if it is the caffine doing this to me. Actaally, I just think the time has come to give up this last addiction, but6 I know it will really disrupt my life for a few days and I am wondering if it is worth it.

Also, b/c my son's sleep schedule conflicts with mine, I get really sleep deprived sometimes. Add to this, I have a long (45 min-1 hour) drive home. I am wondering about non-cafine, reletively healthy ways to make sure I get home safely. ALthough, come to think of it, I have not come close to falling asleep at the wheel even once since I quit coffee.

Any comments will definitely be appreciated!

Can't answer your question, but I want to give you a friendly reminder that caffeine is always one of the drugs you should go off slowly (to avoid nasty migraines.) Switch that tea to green tea, then go down by a cup every other day or so.

If you drink extra water, you can offset the dehydration from caffeine. (I like to depend on tea for my "morning glory"....you know, keeping the digestion moving....OK too much info.)
You can also try natural stimulants, like guarana or ma huang to replace the caffeine. Green tea works but might be too mild.

Agreed... After about 48 hours off caffine, I'll get a HUGE headache. Good luck!

I had to give up caffeine completely because of IBS (even a couple SIPS of a latte or a tea, and I'm crying with gut pain...or the caffeine content in pop, chocolate...it's a tragedy! haha). It's hard to replace, I won't deny. Without the stimulant effects, I find it hard to stay awake in class sometimes (some profs are boorrring). But what works for me is cardio excercise in the morning, or any time I feel particularly drowsy. It's natural adrenaline. I also drink apple juice, which has a strange 'wake up' effect. I don't know if I've noticed any direct benefits of quitting it, except that obviously I no longer require coffee to 'wake up', but I have been noticing that I sleep better, and basically whenever i feel like it (no more insomnia and plenty of naps, which are great refreshers as well!). I guess there's nothing else like it exactly, but without it I really feel the effects of getting less than seven or eight hours of sleep. If I get adequate sleep, I don't miss it nearly as much!

All true; when you stop caffine you will get a headache for a while. Withdrawl, believe it or not!
    Then it will go away.
Try hot chocolate. It won't do anything for the headache, but you'll still have that nice feeling of holding the warm mug.

Yep.. Headaches. I quit drinking regular caffeinated coffee when I was pregnant. I still have no idea why I switched to unleaded. I had headaches for quite a while.

    Good luck!

I quit caffiene for a few months. True Life: I was a Starbucks junky! hehe
I got headaches alot and always felt tired because I couldnt rely on my liquid pick me up. Lots of cold cold water helped wake me up as well as keep me hydrated. I got more sleep to feel better and excersized more to keep my energy up.

Back on coffee again...damn you Arco gas stations.

I never got headaches when I quit caffeine...but obviously I'm in the minority.

I'll second Maxine's suggestion of guarana (not ma huang though). Also, use a coffee substitute, like decaf or dandelion, or chicory coffee... the placebo effect rocks! My body's dumb, when I switched over, I still had to have a 'coffee' in the morning before I really got going. A lot of the addiction is habit.

There are also little vials of gingko and/or ginseng that you can buy at health food or chinese herbal stores (or online)- I don't use them, but heard they are great for an energy boost.

Let me report, again, that most people can TOTALLY avoid the headaches by just stepping the dosage down in increments!

It may not be possible for *everyone* to quit caffeine completely using this method, but for most people dealing with side effects, getting down to a cup or two of green tea (vs. coffee which has several times the caffeine) can make them go away.

And going from a cup of green tea to nothing is a lot less hard on the system than going from several cups of coffee to nothing.

Caffeine in larger dosages (in excess of 1 per day) not only flushes your body of needed water, but also flushes your body (and bones) of needed calcium, vitamins, and minerals. While caffinated teas are ok having 1 or 2 times per day...any more than that and you will find that you are looking "less healthy". If you just like to drink tea, drink naturally decaf teas. While the green caffinated teas are ok in moderation...they can still "cause harm" in excess.

Ehhh...quitting...start it during a time period in which you have 3 days to quit. It won't be that short...but it'll give you an idea of how your body is going to react.

I drank lots of water which helped curb any cravings and eliminate some of the other withdrawl symptoms.

Take your vitamins every day. It'll help push you through the withdrawl stage by replacing the vitamins/minerals that were lost during your "addiction".

Don't do it cold turkey. I used to be badly addicted to caffeine - 10 cups a day or so, and for awhile I was even brewing my coffee with caffeinated bottled water. It was causing painful cysts in my breasts and all kinds of stomach problems, so on the doctor's advice I decided to quit. I spent three days suffering from intense migraines, throwing up, cold sweats, and shakes. After about three days, the throwing up and shaking went away but the headaches and sweats lasted a little longer. I think the headaches took about a week or so to go away.

Now I have one cup of coffee per day and an occasional diet soda. No more worries.

I have already cut down from 5-6 cups of coffee a day to 2-3 cups of tea. It is absolutely true what chaos fairy said, you can cut down a LOT and not get headaches. I do tend to wander around the house *CLUTCHIG* my warm mug, especailly in the winter, so I will probably be drinking a lot of herbal tea this year.

I am still attempting (and failing miserably) on that damn detox diet, which actaully says tea is bad for you. I have never heard that and I am wondering if anybody knows whether this is true. I could google "tea + health effects" but I am sure I will find a lot of nonsense that way, and I would rahter ask real people who I know.

During the detox part of the diet, ANY CAFFEINE is bad for you. After you get through the detox, you start incorporating every day things into your diet.

Like I said before...caffeine flushes your body of needed vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. It also taxes your liver and your kidneys. Since you want to do the detox to help cleanse your organs and give them a break...you should not drink the teas/coffees, etc. and, then, you should not be drinking more than 1-2 cups per day. I found that drinking hot lemon water with a little Stevia Sweetner gave me my "hot drink" fix.

Tea is actually quite good for you in the *long* run, especially green tea and white tea which are packed with antioxidants and low in caffeine -- it's a big part of why the Japanese live longer! :-) Individual diet regimens may vary.

You could also switch to green tea, which is very healthy and has no caffeine, or decaf black tea which also has health benefits, or flower tea. I'm a huge fan of flower tea in the winter, especially hibiscus.
