Default FCC Def. of Obscene Material

Some of you may remember the "War on Porn" thread I posted awhile back. Here is some more information on the subject :

    "What makes material “obscene?”

Obscene speech is not protected by the First Amendment and broadcasters are prohibited, by statute and regulation, from airing obscene programming at any time. According to the U.S. Supreme Court, to be obscene, material must meet a three-prong test: (1) an average person, applying contemporary community standards, must find that the material, as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest (i.e., material having a tendency to excite lustful thoughts)

Does the FCC regulate violence on television?

The FCC does not currently regulate the broadcast of violent programming.

In our assessment of whether material is “patently offensive,” context is critical. The FCC looks at three primary factors when analyzing broadcast material: (1) whether the description or depiction is explicit or graphic; (2) whether the material dwells on or repeats at length descriptions or depictions of sexual or excretory organs; and (3) whether the material appears to pander or is used to titillate

for more facts on this subject check out:

So sex is bad but violence is ok

Sex brings about life and violence often takes away life. But the act that brings life into the world is offensive but actions that harm and/or end life is a-ok .

    Mind boggling.

Why can't we just decide for ourselves what we want to view, read and hear ? And then there is the what about the kids argument. Well , uh- DUH ! It's called parenting. If a parent doesn't want their kids exposed to this or that then DON"T ALLOW them to be exposed to it.

If someone can't control what their kids watch on TV well then IMHO that makes them unfit parents.

Technology is so much better today than it used to be( parental control settings on TV's etc) and yet somehow some parents today can't seem to do what my parents had no trouble doing over 20 years ago.

I say if they can't ( or truth be told can't be bothered with) setting limits for their own children then they should not be allowed to continue being parents !

    GRRR ! end of rant.

Amen. Interesting how it's the "less government intervention" crowd (i.e. Republicans) that are pushing all this crap isn't it.

^ Someone doesn't remember the Tipper Gore days, clearly...or Liebermann's video game proposals.

Idiocy in censorship knows no partisan loyalty.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.
