Default More techies about to loose their jobs

Save your money citizen based techies - you are about to be out of the job. The judicial committee has OK'ed 100,000 or so more H1-B visas for foreign workers you can train and then be replaced by.

Contact your congress critter saying NO MORE H1-Bs!

Blessing in disguise. These poor cubicle ferns should get hard labors jobs and live actualized lives instead of getting a monitor tan. Read "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand.

Hmm, the president of a Coal Miner's Union was on "Nightline" this morning, talking about the high turnover and shortage of miners today.......Makes me want to sing "Daddy Was A Bankrobber" by The Clash...LOL.....
But seriously, an IT job is not utopia......(have you seen "Office Space"?) When I exited high school, computer science was "hot" and snotnosed brats were making $80K a year doing programming......but things have changed.....
Part of why foreign born techies are so eager to work here is that the American dream is still seductive. We live in a nice country, barring acts of God and crazy government......these people want a piece of the pie!
Meanwhile, methinks Mexican immigrants will soon know the mining toil that Welsh & Cornish immigrants knew for so long....

Blame our education system. Partly, and the media, for not interesting kids in technical fields. and poarents for not really caring. And the international money exchange and our political system for making it cheaper to import rather than to utilize domestic products, including intelligence and labor. And our hiring system and the HR departments for being JUST PLAIN STUPID.

I totally agree with threlayer. Opening our borders to immigrants is sure to cause anxiety. To me ,we have been living in a dream too long. This new measure will make us gear towards competing on a global scale.

It isn't a matter of lack of interest ... it's a lack of financial incentive. When one can work 9 months of the year for $40k plus with unbelieveable health and retirement benefits as a teacher, without even being held responsible for the percentage of students that actually pass the courses that teacher teaches --- why would anybody want to become an engineer or technician where the phone can ring nights and weekends, where you WILL be held held responsible to actually achieve certain results by a certain time within a certain budget etc. for the similar pay and lesser benefits ?

Kids are largely not interested in these fields. Maybe not inspired by some teachers and parents. You are right that consulting engineers have the onerous task of defending their work for a lifetime, particuylarly in design-build jobs. More and more engineers and scientists are being displaced by foreign professional workers (both domestic and outsourced). And this is amplified by an educational system which promotes foreign students toan extent because of the lack of interest in domestic students. A vicious cycle.

After all who would want to watch on a TV series the trials and problems encountered by an engineering firm, over those of a police department or a hospital? Or even a law firm.... Hmmm. Who indeed.?

...and most companies won't train their existing employees in skills that atually matter. instead you get sent to 'how to manage conflict...', and 'how to be a good corporate slave...' classes.

or you get fource fed management junk and 'corporate cheerleader' bullshit...while the indian, brazilian, and chinese (sp) contractors get the good positions.

so much is going on in this field...in 'corporate america'...makes me want to wait tables...or something else...

    end of rant

why do some people still have to fight to get the same opportunities that are given to others?

    reclusiveness...is a good thing.

the greatest revenge in the world...is success.

I agree that companies are not at all interested in providing prof. employees with 'transferrable skills.' It is not in their best interests to do so. They do train in company-specific skills and expect that the employee will do any remaining 'professional development' that they may be interested in. Sometimes they even give them time and funding to accomplish this on their own, as long as it seems not to be in conflict and it may be along the lines the company is going or may go in the future.

Some classes are mandatory and sometimes contain transferrable skills, like 'Sexual Harassment', 'OSHA', 'Hazardous Materials', etc. Some are advisable depending on the career path they see you in. Some are related to specific company procedures, data sources, and equipment. Examples are 'MS Office,' and company email.

More and more engineers and scientists are being displaced by foreign professional workers (both domestic and outsourced).
... and one MAJOR reason for this is the relative personal liability risk of an American engineer / scientist being personally sued for negligence / 'malpractice' should a mistake / flaw / accident result from their work. One 'generous' jury can effectively wipe out the 'financial fruits' of an entire career's worth of work. Foreign engineers / scientists are much more difficult to sue in an American court - particularly if they aren't residing in the US at the time the case comes before the court !

Good stuff, Deogol. But from a real world standpoint, the direction is clear and it's not going to be reversed until another 1930's style depression is staring people squarely in the face. Until then, political realities will continue to destroy the American middle class, will continue to exempt the rich, and will continue to subsidize the poor.

Just as Delphi's bankruptcy has finally splashed the financially unsustainable $27 an hour union wages for fork truck drivers into the national media, at some point the financial unsustainability of states providing welfare/medicaid/food stamp benefits worth the equivalent of $10-$12 an hour to people who aren't working (and who therefore aren't likely to seek work either) will also hit the mainstream media in a big way. But so far, we haven't even been able to address the unsustainable cost issue of providing medicaid benefits to illegal aliens, despite the forced closure of many emergency medical facilities due to de-facto bankruptcy !!!! Until political correctness and tax increases to finance that political correctness start being evaluated for financial sustainability, nothing is going to change.

    ^^^ I totally agree.

At least the issue is being talked about in some circles.

You can't have cheap goods, which EVERYBODY wants to buy, unless you have cheap labor, including labor to design the goods and the machinery to produce them with. I hope that basic is clear. That means marketing goods produced where people live in conditions where labor is cheaper than in the USA. So the more good we buy on the cheap, the more we force USA workers out of jobs. That's the way it's going to be from here on out, depression and a fantasy awakening or not.

In my opinion, because of marketing and various policies, the people of the USA have become spoiled brats wanting everything marketed to them, regardless of the consequences to their neighbor, and eventually to themselves. Come on now, how much junk do you need in your life.

You can't reduce costs to approaching nothing forever. Look at the technology in your Indonesian-made cellphone or your laptop; how could that be made in an industry where fork-lift drivers expect over $20/hour with full benefits? and real estate taxes rivalling your mortgage payments. Technology or not, you can't replace everyone with machinery. Machinery may not require a salary but it costs a lot initially and it takes people to keep it going. And you can't get machinery to design that machinery without people getting paid. And it doesn't get distributed solely by machinery. Not everyone is going to work for peanuts literally so you can have all the gizmos you see advertised on your very cheap TV set.

That's just the way it is. Either get very smart and produce leading edge stuff, produce something that cannot be imported, get into the import business, or live in poverty.

Go read some Henry David Thoreau. Quit getting hoodwinked by shysters on TV!
