I'm going to invest in a sewing machine. I made a cute little toga-dress with needle & thread but it's too explicit for the club. I want to make gowns & maybe sell them.

Maybe you have some older costumes that you can take apart and make into patterns? You can alter the patterns as needed, but at least you have a base to start with.

i make my own! i use just old tshirts, skirts, etc. and cut them up. dont have a sewing machine, but i can hand sew. take a class or talk to your grandma. even if you can use a machine, knowing how to do it by hand is a good skill because you can take your project anywhere and can easily make repairs.

Kwik Sew has some dancer-ish patterns...they usually need some alterations though. Costume section of most sewing catalogues is useful.

We have great fabric stores around here, but some of my favourite fabrics come from thrift stores. Also the WalMart $1.97 bin, believe it or not!

I do, though mostly they're nothing very complicated. I make my own patterns by guess work and trial n error.

^^^ definitely trial and error. I make most of my thongs since I am itty bitty between the legs. Sine I work in a nude club, they can never bo too small anyway.

    ^BUMP^

Sorry but I'm very interested in learning more about this. What is the best sewing machine to buy to make clothes, especially dancer clothes?

Any sewing machine will work (I've been using a Kenmore stretch-stitch machine for years...), but a serger will make your life infinitely easier.

Start with a simple sewing machine though...I saw an 8-stitch Singer at Wal-Mart the other day for $99 (CAD). That's all you need. A fancy-pants machine won't help you any unless you're running a sweatshop or need to do custom embroidery. Some people think they need a 'stronger' machine to sew certain fabrics (like those fucking glue-on sequins), but it's really all in the needle you use, and how you adjust the tension. I can tell you about that later if you want.

As for patterns, I still love my Kwik Sew patterns! I also like to take old clothes apart and use the pieces as pattern pieces. Regular patterns make great stripper clothes too...use your imagine to make everything shorter, tighter and sluttier, lol.

I've designed some of my attire, but never made them myself. I can't sew for shit.

I sewed my own costume from scratch once, but it was for Halloween not dancing. It was Professor Snape's frock coat from Harry Potter, I used a Butterick cassock pattern and just made it mid-thigh instead of floor length, then fitted it to be super snug, then added tons of fake buttons and sewed white shirt cuffs and collar onto it. My first attempt to seriously sew, but it turned out GREAT! Won tons of swag and was posing for pics with ppl all night at the last Book People release party in Austin, they even put me on their website lol I'm taking another crack at designing my own gear for dancing now by sewing metal mesh onto my thongs for added bling, we'll see how that goes and after that who knows.

oo yea i want to make my own costumes, too. I know how to sew and have made all sorts of things before, but I haven't tried to make a costume.p
I saw a girl at the club with one of those long mens hanes wife-beater shirts (sorry, don't know what else to call them)
she had cut it right below the boobs and used the bottom as a skirt. Pretty cute, but I prefer to look more dressy. I bought some rhinestones to glue onto my thong and decorate my current all black dress.
I definitely make all my jewelry, though! That's fun, too.

Ok here is a dumb question- what kind of fabric are we supposed to buy? lycra? cotton/lycra blend? None of my dance outfits have tags on them anymore...

And how much fabric to make a bikini top thong and shorts?

OMGzor! You were there? I was, too! We were the nerds that waited almost all day and were second in line! Neato!

Side note...did you see the chick that was dressed as the Goblet of Fire? That was a cool costume!

On topic, though...I can't sew to save my life, so costume making would probably be out for me!

My bf bought me a sewing machine for valentines day, along with that beadazzler thingy, bc i had been ranting and raving about wanting to learn how to sew and make my own stripper clothes!!!

well hancock here offers sewing classes i believe its like once a week for 5 weeks.. its like 80 bucks or something, so im gonna take the next session that comes up... as far as patterns go, i have a friend who is taking clothing design classes in college and they are learning to make patterns.. im going to give her a few of my outfits so she can copy them and make patterns for me!!! itll give both of us practice, and itll give her a little spending $$$, and a job to put on her resume!!!
