    Default Too expensive salon?

So today I went to this salon to get my hair highlighted and cut. It ended up costing me 240$ (including tip,) now I love how it turned out, and I'll return because I like my new hairdresser alot and I am picky about my hair. However I was just wondering if this is average price these days? Back home in the northern suburbs I would pay like 80 for my highlights and that included a cut and a blow out.

hmmm, and i thought 100 was a lot for highlights... i guess that would be about right for a high end salon.... it better look awesome for all the money you paid.... but you gotta think, nothing can make a girl happier than an awesome highlight and cut... even if it did cost $240...

I think it really depends on the salon, stylist experience & training, your hair, & what services they perform. I paid, for a touch up roots & outgrowth of highlights, + a cut, about $165.00 (not including tips). But, my hair is on the thick side & almost butt length. The salon I go to is on the upscale side, but I've been going there on & off for years, & never had a bad experience. I went to a different salon for awhile, & the last time, they left the highlight stuff on too long, + had a new grad. working on me. My hair got overhighlighted & i was very upset. I do my own mini root touch ups & small cuts (w/professional scissors) in between salon visits.

First, it depends what city you're in. If you're in a fairly big metropolitan city in an upscale salon, then that is not outrageous. Did you like the job done? If so and you have the money for it, then it's reasonable. Also have to factor in how long your hair is, etc....when it comes to price. You're not so much paying alot for the product used, majority of what you pay is for the hairdressers time involved and experience they have.
(I was a hairdresser and asst. manager of a salon for 5 years, from when I was 19-24. I was charging around $100 and up for long hair, to do highlights and cut in the early 1990's in an upscale salon. So being it's about 13-15 years past that $240 is reasonable).

I went for the second time in my adult life about a month ago for ass length hair to be razored and taken just past my bra strap.

This was a nice salon in Miami. It cost me only $75.00 for all that cutting and layers!

She spent about 2 hours on my hair!!!!! I tipped well. But that was friggin cheap i thought.

I will be going back to her again. Busy salon, beautiful, and well dressed ladies! What an experience!

For what you had, I paid $130 tip included in Fargo, ND. I had short hair though.

For an upscale salon in Denver, it's not uncommon to pay $75-$100 for a cut alone. So $240 for a cut, color and tip ain't too bad. If you're happy with the services you received, then you didn't pay too much.

If you are happy, then it's not too much. A few weeks ago, an idiot hacked off 6 inches off my hair. I wanted a trim. Do you know how much business I attracted with my long, beautiful hair? I would pay $240 to get it back. I would pay $240 to prevent it from ever happening again. Stick with a stylist/colorist who delievers exactly what you want.

Very true. Being a former hairdresser, well I still do friends and family on my own time, I trust very few with my hair. It's so hard to find someone who does it the way you like it. When I quit working in the salon I had many customers who still wanted me to do their hair. I ended up keeping some and doing them at their homes. I had a few who drove far to see me, did their hair at my house. It meant that much to them, so that was flattering that they missed me that much. Hair is such an important feature.....people will pay big bucks to have someone they trust.
If you're happy, stick with them.

Pamela- $75 was a super deal in Miami, your hair looks great.

My salon, which is low-key but pretty upscale in chicago, charges me baout $35.00 for a cut. If I get a highlight, cut and brow wax, I usually spend about $160.00 - $180.00 with tips. (Depends on the length of my hair at the time). My hair is pretty thick, and normally it's been about mid-back length. Even that seems kinda expensive to me, so I usually only get a highlight to 'treat' myself. I forget what it's called, but I get the two-tone highlight, not one color.

I forked over near that same amount a few days ago.. then again I had several process done and got a cut. My colorist did such a fab job I tipped her well. I figured it was only fitting since I live on my tips as well. Karma.

It is my hair after all and helps me make money. Quite important and well, she did an excellent job.

I don't know how prices are in your area, if you were in Michigan I'd say you got royally ass fucked, if you go to a nice salon in our area like Heidi's where I work or Marshall Field's/Macy's Premier Salons where I'm going you should be looking at 150 tip and all out the door MAX! The ONLY way it should be over 200 is if you have a LOT of hair or really thick hair, if your hair is down to your ass or it's so thick that you can't run your fingers through it I understand that. Also I'm going to give you girls a tip, don't tell the person that's doing you that you are a stripper, the prices kind've automatically go up for strippers at a lot of these places, even chain places although I would say a reputable chain probably would be more honest than like let's say a really nice salon that just had one store, they aren't accountable to anyone, the more stores they have the more accountability and the less likely you'll get fucked.

    Dale

I will reiterate most of what you pay depends on where you live and believe it or not what real estate costs I can tell you Michigan is considered kind've average, if you drive to Indy from here it's cheaper, if you drive to Chicago from here it would be way more. Philly I'd probably say would be close to us, maybe a little more so I wouldn't shell out more than 175 there. Do remember that you get what you pay for to a point but the idea is not to get fucked, people that are saying 240 is fine live in NYC, Chicago, or LA and not in your town.

That is a normal price for what you had done.. you get what you pay for.. remember that!! Oh and there is no way any stylist would charge more just because you are a dancer.. we would just know we are going to get a better tip because you girls understand what its like to work for tips!! -

Well my reply to that is that I know for a fact that the overcharging goes on, I'm not going to rat anyone out but I know girls in the business here and there are many occasions where I've heard of salons charging anywhere from about 30 extra to double. Jenna you might live in LA, or NYC, or Chicago, 240 would probably be acceptable there, anywhere else that I know of anything past 150 is a ripoff. and I work in the business. I stand by what I said, if you are asked what you do don't tell the person that you strip or your prices will go up more than likely. What you have to understand is that in the business there may be a menu however most stylists have leway as to what they can actually charge and they can just say well your hair is too long or thick for the 125 price we have to charge you 175 or 200. Now if she had to get a COLOR CORRECTION then it's worth that kind of money because sometimes when non professionals dye their own hair they screw it up and if that's the case prepare for 200 to 300 (probably closer to 400 in NYC, LA, or Chicago) but have the stylist explain why they feel you need that. Stylists are professional people that offer a valuable service but you have to make sure that yours is good and honest, if you trust the person you've been going to that's cool, however if you walk into a place new especially that telling the person you are a stripper can be bad news.

Cost of living is pretty high in Seattle area, so it would probably be comparable to a metropolitan area like Philly. I had my hair cut and full foil done at one of our top salons last month and paid $140 for the color and $65 for the cut for a total of $205 before tip, so I wouldn't say that yours was out of the ballpark. I think that bottom line is if you are happy with it and can you afford it? If so, then, you deserve it girl, because god knows we work hard for our money so we should definately not feel bad about spending it on ourselves!
