Default Do you resent "stripper tourists"?

It seems like a lot of girls (myself soon to be included in this growing trend) strip whilst in college, often because of the flexible schedule and fewer work hours.
Strip clubs are filling up with girls that are using this industry temporarily and don't regard it as their careers or professions. This seems to be gaining social acceptability as well, I've talked to a number of dancers who've mentioned that playing the "I'm in college" card works to get dances, even if they're lieing.
It kinda pisses me off that stripping is more socially acceptable if its temporary.
That if a stripper is really still a "good girl" - has a day job, is a student, is young and experimental etc. her line of work becomes ok when women who are doing it to support themselves, and maybe a family, and regarding the industry as a long-term endeavor, seem to carry a heavier share of the negative stereotypes.

I'm curious how women who are stripping and don't view it in quite the same temporary manner feel about this other kind of stripper.

Are you trying to change the world, one lapdance at a time? It IS a temporary career, and "long-term" is often less than 10-15 years for veterans. Stripper "tourist" is poor terminology.

Well......I'm glad they pass in and out. They make up the "periphery" of the industry.

The only actual 'resentment' I have noticed in regard to 'student strippers' is that clubs often allow them to 'cherry pick' the most lucrative shifts i.e. thursday, friday and saturday nights, without expecting them to 'pay their dues' working less lucrative shifts on monday, tuesday and wednesday nights - in order to accomodate their college schedules. In some clubs, 'cherry picking' has become enough of an issue among 'career' dancers vs 'student strippers' that the clubs have instituted scheduling rules in the interest of financial fairness (i.e. in order for a girl to schedule a weekend night, she must first work a night early in the week).

I don't know which category I'm in, as I'm a student, but have been dancing awhile and plan on dancing part-time indefinitely. I certainly don't resent short-termers.

I don't think people necessarily look down upon career strippers...just upon unhappy career (or older) strippers. The most popular girls I know have been at it for 10, 12, 15 years, and are still going strong and loving it. People are usually impressed that they embrace their jobs so fully, and it makes me feel so half-assed, lol.

Not to be rude, ('cause I can be sometimes when I don't mean to) but if that's what u call it, I'm definetly a "stripper tourist." Making money, saving money, going to school, investing it, etc. NO, I DON'T want to be a career stripper, I could not imagine making this my life after 30. I never really understood the women who had been doing it for 15-20 years.........if you made all that money, what did you do with it? Did you invest it or go to school or buy real estate get an IRA or elevate in some way or another? Or did you put all your kids through college/in private school?

I'm not completely knockin' the idea tho. There was this one chic I worked with upstate who was 36 and she didn't look a day over 24. She had it, so she flaunted it. But a lot of women I've seen who've been doin it for 12-15 years+ look like they've been through the ringer and should maybe consider another occupation............

I guess I am a "stripper tourist" but I only need to work 2 nights to make the money that some of the "career strippers" make in a week. I feel like I'm half-assing it sometimes as well, but to me it is just a stepping stone to get me on my own and into graduate school without being broke and living on ramen. I save all my money and don't live a "stripper lifestyle" so that I can take advantage of this opportunity that I won't have later in life. My goal is to buy a house, save a little more and then get out. The only thing is that I already feel like I'm sucked in.

Scarlett, please check out the so why did you become a stripper thread. men do generally have a negative view of career adult entertainers... even though they can't live without them! why? socio-religious mental conditioning. America is a so-called christian nation, and while anyone can look around and say this is not true just by the visual evidence, it still makes people feel good to be a ble to point a finger at someone else and say "you're bad!!!". Forget that this guy is equally bad for being in the club himself or htat he probably cheats on his wife and his taxes, or may be molesting his step-daughter...

thanfully, not all custiesare this way, which is why I love love love hobbyists. but for the ones that are, trying to change their minds is not the answer. Just smile, say you are working your way through college, or that you were layed-off from your job, and take his fuckin $$$$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

haha, i feel this way as well but i think and thats how probably all "career" strippers get started whether or not we intend to do this forever.

i'm not a student though i still pass as the "young girl pulling herself through/supplementing day job" thing and i hope to go back to school soon (in which this job will be compatible). i certainly don't agree with giving ANY girl priveliges over others for school or anything (save very special circumstances, such as health, maternity leave, temporary conditions etc). BEING a student is a privelige that most people don't see. not that students don't work hard too, but it doesn't always have as much to do with brains and drive as it does with your background, social status, etc. i can see how resentment can arise from these sorts of situations, but i don't think any girl's life or lifestyle and reason for dancing. can be judged more worthwhile or valid than any other's. those feelings belong on the double standards that make us feel degraded in this industry (ironically, probably the same ones that make us money! what a paradox).

additionally we have no right to criticize women who do this for longer than we expect to do it ourselves. real estate, education, whatever "elevating" oneself means are not keys to a secure future. (besides, doesn't that term "elevating" imply that other people have to suffer because you are on top?) sucess and the american dream aren't as fairly and easily achieved as we are taught to think as children (and conservatives -- hah).
