I remember someone wrote about taking this medication for her cystic acne. Any experiences with this medication - and I mean firsthand experiences, NOT ad nauseum anecdotal conjecture about what causes acne. Thanks.

A diurectic for cystic acne? Unlikely. Do you mean Accutane?

Interesting........ was just browsing some medical literature and spironolactone is occasionally used for acne as an anti-androgen. However, for most acne it is not likely to be effective.
^ It's a common prescription for acne, actually.
It's useful if your acne is caused by hormonal stuff like polycystic ovaries. I take a small dose, and my skin's been steadily improving for the entire time I've been on it.
Spironolactone is also in many of the anti-acne bc pills (like Yasmin).

Oh really? I just started on Yasmin, and my skin is an utter mess. Worse than it's ever been. I'm trying to avoid Accutane, because I just cannot afford to take a medication that is known to cause depression.
Ah ha! Here's what I found:
"The 3 mg of drospirenone in Yasmin is equivalent to only 25 mg of spironolactone. The doses of spiro which seem to be effective for androgenic skin and hair problems (persistent acne, increased hair growth and alopecia) are usually 100 to 200 mg per day. Less than 75 mg, at least in my experience, tends not to be effective. So using Yasmin is like taking a very small dose of spiro. It might help somewhat but is unlikely to be as effective as spiro in higher doses. It is, of course, effective as an oral contraceptive."
I'll report what the derm says when I see her on Tuesday. What dose are you on, Scarlet?
I have taken it for several years now. My face hardly breaks out at all and it used to. However, I have fucked up hormones which was what probably caused my face to break out in the first place. I also don't retain fluid like I used to. I used to never get my periods and just swell up. If I go off my spiro for a few days I will gain easily 5 pounds if not more and I'm only 5 feet tall so 5 pounds on me is a lot! I take 200 mg/day. Since my acne was caused by hormone problems it helped me but I guess it would depend on the cause of the acne whether it would work for someone else.
Hi cookie... never tried it, but I looked into it myself, cause I get bad cystic acne outbreaks. I was on the contraceptive pill, which kept my skin under control (diane35) but when I came off it (bad blood pressure) my skin was awful and my hair started falling out too (happy days, huh). What really helped me is a topical solution called Formula 101- Acne Getaway. It's made by a Chinese doctor, and it is *seriously* great stuff. I've got awful skin, but if I apply it religiously to the affected areas 3-4 times a day, my skin clears up. Hope that helps some.

smartcookie, have you read the forum at yestheyrefake regarding spirolactone? I was just perusing their board for obagi and happened to notice quite a few posts on spiro for hormonal acne.
