Default Why cant I do the splits sideways????

I have always wondered this! I am very flexable, can put both legs behind my head, fold in half ... cant do the splits sideways only with one leg forward. I just found this. you have to read the next few articles but i found this interesting.

I've never managed to do them sideways either although I have been able to do them with either leg forward. I can do the half sltit thing he talks about though so maybe I just havent been trying hard enough...

Hehe I can only do one leg forward and one back -its my right leg too. I cant do full on splits with one leg out to each side.

You have to do plenty of stretching to do both kinds of splits and hell some people are wonderfully flexible.

I've always been able to do the splits...left/right/and side.

It IS a matter of stretching out your muscles...but it's also about having the joints/etc lined up properly.

Did you know that bad posture will prevent you from doing the splits, etc properly? If you have bad posture, you throw the rest of your body off...

You found a very good article. Now, just go see if you can find it at a library...if you can't, you can always request it.

I can't do the forward splits but I CAN do the sideways! WTF? My back knee always flips up when I go forward, like a reflex.

This site is good also for working towards the splits:

The reviews of Scientifically Stretching say that it's mostly technical with few illustrations and no routines. If you have any idea how to stretch for the center split (the one with both legs to the sides), please post! When I try to do this split, my legs and pelvis "lock up" somewhere around 120 degrees. I'm not feeling a stretch at this point. It doesn't hurt. It feels as if my bones won't let me go any further. If I can "unlock" my joints, boy, I'd be really happy.

That's how I feel too. I'ts like my hip bones move into my body, and "dig" like they dont want me to go any further down.

If you read the article, it tells you that you need to lean from the hips in order to "move" the joint into a naturally different position.

Go back and read the second page of the article...it explains it all right in there.

I don't think I could handle doing anything more than a right leg front split now (which is what I had in the first place). Doing all that puts a hella lotta pressure on my knees (particularly the injured one). I don't want to screw up anything worse than I already have!

I tried it again and again and again because I really want to do a side split! It still locks. I'm guessing that there are additional stretches to give one the flexibility to correctly lean the hips forward in order to "unlock" the joint. I'd love to know what they are.

From what I've read from the reviews at amazon.com, the book contains too much scientific jargon with "stick figure" sketches that I doubt I, a layman, would understand, which is why I am reluctant to buy it.

I dont think splits sideways can be done after just practicing over and over again, it really takes time, just dont get discouraged. Not many people can do them because it takes practice even if you are flexible. Getting your body used to that position takes time and patience, and most people I know have practiced for months. Yoga is great for those who are not flexible at all, like myself. Just keep at it, you will be amazed at what you can do with your body with the right amount of time and practice
