    Default weird arm bumps

I don't know what these little red bumps on my upper arms are. They seem to flare up and down, but never really go away. I thought they were acne bumps, but the oxy wash doesn't do a thing for them (it took care of zits on my back just fine). Moisturizer seems to make them worse. Gross! They aren't very noticeable, but they drive me insane. I want smooth skin! Does anyone know what causes these or how I could get rid of them?? thanks!

i have those! mine are an allergic reaction to eggs keep a food diary so when they flare up (get redder and itchy) you can see what makes it happen... its an inflammatory response, like any other allergic reaction, so you could theoretically experiment with OTC allergy pills, or an anti-inflammatory drug such as aspirin... even aspirin topically.. when you crush it up and make a paste.. dont use too much though maybe half a pill to start and mix with some vaseline to keep it on your skin..

I had these, too, but one doctor told me they are something else. I have some on my thighs sometimes, too, and I've known some other people with them. I forget the exact term he used, but it occurs because your skin grows around your hair near your hair follicles. Sounds lovely, don't it. Anyway, he gave me a special, heavy duty moisturizing lotion to use. That was a while ago, and they've slowly gone away. It's mostly caused by dryness, I believe, so take shorter showers and use heavy lotion on those areas. I used to love taking long, hot showers, but it's ultimately drying for my skin. (I'm not a professional, and you might have something different going on. Just offering my opinion! )

I used to get red bumps on my chest and neck. Attractive! My derm told me to put hydrocortisone cream on it to bring down the inflamation. You can buy this stuff OTC at a drugstore.

I have this, MY doctor told me it's a weird type of dry skin, and prescribed Eucerin Plus alpha hydroxy lotion, which exfoliates the outer layers and rehydrates underneath. It works really well -- I see results after only a couple of days of use, although he said it might take as much as six months.

sounds like an alergic reaction or some sort of dermatitis.

Also could be ingrown hairs from resting on that area.

Most likely keratosis pilaris. I just went to the dermatologist last week for that and it sounds like the same thing you're describing. Small, rough patches of dry, kinda bumpy skin that come and go - seem to have gotten a tad worse for me since moving to the desert. Doc said keep it moisterized with a good exfoliating lotion - with alpha hydroxies - and it will subside.

He also gave me a pamphlet that says most people get it on upper arms and thighs, and sometimes on cheeks (both kind ).

I have it on my ass of all places and for the longest time thought it was acne - it's not, and the acne treatments I was doing made it worse by drying the skin out more I'm glad I went to the doc, even if it was a bit expensive - maybe now I can get my ass cleared up. HA

It's contact dermatitis. Not serious. I would try a body wash with salysilic acid in it. Neutragena makes a good one. don't over wash and be sure to use a lotion with NO mineral oil. It gets worse this time of year b/c of the artificial heat. It's so dry. The tanning bed helsp to clear it up, too but could cause other issues. I would use the wash and keep it hydrated.

I also know a friend who got something similar on her upper arms AND under her breasts. Does it sting in any way? If so, it may be what she had which is actually a form of a yeast infection that can occur in damp warm areas of your body. Her doctor told her to use a jock itch spray <of all things> on it and it cleared up in just a few days!

Docs tend to use "contact dermatitis" very loosely, aka, there's something wrong with your skin!
It could be dryness (it sounds like excema to me, but i'm not an expert) and if the skin is indeed dry, then use a heavy moisturizing agent...but make sure it's for sensitive skin and unscented<--- because these types of chemicals could also be the irritant. My friend got "contact dermatitis" and it turns out its from laundry soap. So shit, who knows what its from...all you can really do is experiment by eliminating the variables until it goes away.

My sister and I have something similar.
My tip: don't use soap. Ever. Not Ivory, not Dove, not anything that says "soap" no matter how moisturizing. The oatmeal soap substitutes are good (again Aveeno - yay Aveeno) and not expensive or a shampoo with a gentle detergent (like a baby shampoo).

Thanks everyone. I used some heavy duty moistuizer and laid off the soap (especially the drying stuff). The bumps went down a bit already. I love you guys! This place solves so many of my little problems.

I've had those little bumps on my upper arms my whole life. They were worse when I was younger, they're not really noticeable anymore, especially if I'm tanned. I might have to try this heavy duty moisturising thing and see if it makes them vanish entirely!

I just read the article that was posted here and thats exactly what I have had for the longest time!! I have these bumps on my arms, legs, and cheeks which is the worst. I went to the dermo but he said there is nothing he can do, its just the way I am, and I have been looking for something to help them fade, especially on my face. Im going to try the things mentioned here. My little cousins always told me I have chicken skin, its embatassing but at least I know Im not the only one with this
