    Default Moving with pets

Anyone ever had to drive a LONG distance with pets who hate being in cars ? Any advice or funny stories to share ?

i went to a bbq with my dog a few summers ago and it was in cleveland about an hour away. i asked everyone to please not feed her, but of course her being cute everyone was feeding her "secretly"

so on the ride home in the back of my friends car, my dog starts to do the "im gonna vomit burps" so not wanting to get my friends car all messed up i did what any good mom would and tried to catch it....

    it overflowed considerably.

that was a very unfun hour ride home.

If you have cats there is a 'cat valium' you can get from their vet. I also found that putting them where they can see you in the car helps a bit.

First time we were supposed to move here from RI was back in 2002. We had a chihuhua and a cat. We didn't have money to rent the Uhaul, so we packed all we could into the Hubby's '79 Volare (Pea green.. It was so lovely) and threw the rest in a storage unit to fetch after we got settled in TN. We took the cat and dog and put them in the car (we all barely had enough room to move). Got as far as the on-ramp to 95 and turned around. LOL

So long story short, we've never moved with pets. However, we had taken the Chihuahua with us when we visited TN 2 weeks before the attempt to move there, and he did great both ways (20-hour car drive both ways).

Hope you have better luck than we did.

I worked as a veterinary assistant for three years- I've seen animals stressed, and I've seen them sedated. For the low risk of the sedative pills we give, it is much easier on the animal (much kinder IMO) to tranq them a bit for travel. Ask your vet if the animal gets stressed in the car (cats especially)!

I travel across country alot with my dog. Had a bad experience. My dog looks mean (german shepard) but is a sweetie. Ok,I broke down on interstate called AAA roadside assistaince. They are supposed to tow your vehicle (if they cant repair it there) and you to nearest mechanic. But they said only I could ride in their car,not the dog. They said because I didnt have a muzzle for him he couldn't ride. (I told them I'd hold on to him and that he is not mean too) So long story short, take a muzzle with you if you have a dog.

My dog who is 11 years old HATES the car. She starts grunting and groaning and whining when you put her in the car. I ride her in a carrier strapped into the seatbelt in the back with a blanket in it. After a while she will calm down if you get on the interstate like for a long trip. One thing that I've noticed that makes a difference is the music I play. If it's something soft and melodic or has maybe a certain pitch to it she whines like crazy. But if I play hip hop it calms her down. Luckily she doesn't get car sick though, just drives me nuts with whining.

My brother's dog gets car sick. My mom warned me about it. We took her somewhere and were just about home, I mean like 2 blocks away from home, and I was thinking how wonderful it was that she didn't get car sick and that maybe my mom was wrong and then guess what happened.....

    (sorry these pics are gross)....

Done it alot with cats...and 2x wioth dog.

LOTS of catnip for cat, they gotta see you all the time, and give the dog (and the cat, in her cage) enuff room to move around and be safe

lots of pee breaks for the dog, and the cat too if u can...

try to give em (on trips over 5 hours) all a chance to run around if even just in the truck cab

email me or PM for more ideas

Well after reading the replies I am absolutely going to talk to the vet about getting something to chill my fur babies out if the hubby takes this new job and we end up moving.

When I was living in the country we had to drive for over an hour to take my male cat to the vet to get him desexed. We were probably 5 minutes max away from the vet, and so far had had a completely hassle free trip, when a big loud truck drove past us and the cat freaked and pissed ALL OVER my lap. Good times!

My cat goes flat as a pancake and hyperventilates when taken on trips in any type of vehicle (since I don't have a car, at present, I used taxis and would tip $10 for the trouble). She doesn't make any noise... just stresses out heaps yet is okay. The only time I would tranq her is if the trip is not a local one and over 2 hours.

Another tip in re: travelling with pets - make sure they havn't had anything to eat (only liquids) 12 hours prior to the trip if possible.

LOL Bunny,I'm sorry your dog puked onto evrything.

I drove from New Orleans to California with my two dogs and the vet prescribed a sedative for them.It worked very well.

I flew cross country with my cat and she was fine. She doesn't like to be in cars though. The vet told me when I bring her back to NY to give her a benadryl.

This summer I drove from south Louisiana to Washington, D.C with a 3 week old kitten. Milo did fine as long as the the air wasn't too cold, he wasn't getting direct sunlight (kept a towel over the side holes in the carrier), he was facing me, I spoke to him every now and then, stuck my finger in for him to play with, and stopped every couple hours for a stretch/potty and quality time/play break. He did fine in the hotel and during the ride. He slept on his own most of the way. Treat them much like you would were you still at home. Speak soothingly and don't make a lot of sudden jerks with the car. Milo was up and playing right out of the car (as shown in the pic)

Be sure if you try a sedative you try it out before the actual trip. I tried 3 types before flying with my dog and one actually made her more hyper. The one I did end up using still didn't do jack shit. When we got on the plane and were waiting to take off she started barking and people were looking all over wondering wtf was that dog barking noise! Both legs of my flight there and back they had an empty seat next to me so I think maybe they did that on purpose so she wouldn't annoy the person next to me. You can't take them out from under the seat when you fly with them. And I had to pay almost as much as my own ticket for her to ride under the seat in front of me. A friend of mine flew with her dog from Louisiana to California and the sedative didn't work either and he freaked out and she finally took him and locked herself into one of the bathrooms with him until they landed. She said people were staring at her like they wanted to kill her cuz her dog was howling like a fool! I've never had to sedate my dog in the car though. She'll eventually just fall asleep. It just makes the trip longer because I have to let her out to pee and drink every time I stop and then get her back in her carrier so it probably adds about an hour onto the trip.

my oldest kittie, mia (she has pics in the pet pics thread ) rode all the way from Dallas to California in the front of the truck with us. she has ridden in cars before but this was a 3 day trip!
when she is in her kittie travel box thing, she is unbearable--constantly meowing and scratching to get out. but if we let her out she will sit in one spot and every once in a while make a little meow that seems to say, "are we there yet?" lol. this kittie also flew from dallas to CA and back a few times before i moved permantly. she is a well traveled kittie! on her first plane trip i had to get her shots and everything to show the airline papers, while i was getting her shots i asked the vet about giving her something. she gave me 2 low-dose valiums. i'm pretty sure she said it was just low-dosage people valium and to give her only a quarter or half i think. she was fine, i don't think she slept, just kinda dozed off a little. gosh i love that kitty cat.
i have noticed with my other cats, usually they are fine in a car as long as they aren't in their cage or if they at least have the lid on it. they let me hold them still gently and don't try to run off.
damn. just realized some people might think this is cruel or unsafe to have the cat not in her cage while in a car...let me tell you i tried leaving her in the carrier and she was not having it. i was scared she was going to rip her claws out from scratching so hard to get out. but outside the carrier, she just sat on top of a cooler we had on the floor between us and didnt get upset or freak out at all.
Oh, I musta took a wrong turn at Albuquerque.
