    It this life?!?

Does it ever feel like your whole life is working? Dancing is my first full-time job and it feels like I go to work, come home, go to sleep, and then get up and go to work again. I work 4-5 days/week, usually not consecutively. When I do work multiple days in a row, I feel like it's all I do. I normally do a 7-3/8-4 shift and by the time I get home and get to sleep (depending on if I go to my place or mom's and whether or not I drive), it can be as late as 9am. I sleep for 5 hours, get up, and a few hours later, I have to start getting ready to go again.

Does anyone else go through this? Do all full-time jobs feel like this? How do you deal?

40 hours a week is pretty normal! Think of all the people that work 80 or work 40 and take care of kids/family.

I think we have it pretty easy. We don't work 40 hours. We take off when we want. Count yourself lucky

Maybe I am misunderstanding but are you saying it takes you from 4 am or 3am til 9am to get home? You should consider a club closer to home.

Yep.....that's normal. I usually work 5 sometimes 6 eight hours shifts a week, sometimes doing a slam (back to back) when there is no one to come in. It sucks.....but it is pretty good $$. I do resent it sometimes though, but I guess it's a personal choice.

I hope I got this right but 7pm to 3am? Damn thats a looong shift. 8hrs or more is long to me. Is there any way you can work less hours while there?

I feel that same way too. But I vary my weeks from back to back days to few and far in between shifts.

I definately feel lucky, don't get me wrong. My mom works regular corporate hours (9-5) and commutes 3-4 hrs/day round trip, mon-fri, and she actually has to go. I can always say, "Oh, I'm not going tonight," which I find I do a little too often.

sorry, Sunkissed, I'll clarify: By the time I get home, shower, walk my dog (if I go to my mother's house), eat, and get sleepy, I end up not going to bed sometimes until 9am. It takes me about 30-45min. by car to get to my apt. from my club, and 2hrs by car to my mom's house.

Maybe it's the overnight hours that make it difficult for me, but it's so worth it $$$

OMG, do I ever feel that way. I work an average of 70-80 hours a week at my regular job, drive each way in L.A. traffic, and then dance on the weekends. YES, I feel like all I do is work. I usually have to choose between a shower and dinner or a good night's sleep. This is not life and I'm in the same place you are.

When I get done with this show, I am moving somewhere clean for a little while and I'll just dance exclusively until I get my debt paid off or until I get a union show with a decent wage. I'm tired of living this way; I am TIRED. I have no time to write or sleep or do anything that makes me feel like I have a purpose in my life.

Part of the reason that we feel like we work all the time is the hours we keep. Because of our hours, it makes it difficult to have a part of the day that you are not either getting ready for work or just got home from work. Think about it, for a 9-5, this is the typicall day. Get up, go to work, come home, have dinner, chill out, go to bed. You have a part of the day that is work time and then you have a whole part of the day that is relax at home or run errands or whatever.
My schedual looks like this. Get up, breakfast, workout, shower, run errands/clean, go to work, come home, chill out for about an hour/shower/eat/whatever, go to bed. Some days I have school and other days I dont, also I have to do homework in there somewhere, usually my days off.
I usually do nto feel rused for time. I always get everything done. Some days are more hectic than others but I feel like i have plenty of time to relax and just hang out, play on the puter, watch tv, whatever.

My boyfried is a teacher, and his whole life, even weekends, is his work. His class starts at 7:30 AM, and goes until 3. He usually has a meeting until 4 or 5, then he comes home. He does lesson plans, testing paperwork, and report cards if there are any. On many of his days off he has in-service days where he either goes to mandatory trainings, or plays psychiatrist to parents in conferences. He doens't even have time to walk the dog. And all of this for a fraction of what I make anually.

I don't work as a dancer but in my job when I'm busy (which luckily I have been lately) I will often work from the morning until the evening and then come home and do work at home and work on the weekends too. I've had slow times where I hardly work but then I'm not making money. That was when I was trying to dance to make extra and I found that it exhausted me more than anything I've ever done and I hardly made any money as a dancer. It's a hard job! Luckily when I work downtown (which I do 90% of the time) it only takes me five minutes to get there.

I think it is really important emotionally to have other things in your life besides just your job. That goes for any job actually.

Very true......But it's even harder when you can't have something besides work.

My last job was nothing but work. I would leave before the sun came up and drive home in traffic when the sun was already down. Just in time to fall asleep and wake up 4-5 hours later to get ready and leave for work trying to beat traffic. I felt like never saw the light of day. Plus for half a year it was 24hrs 7days a week at work.....what didn't help was that when were back home in the USA for the rest of the half a year, we were working ridiculous 12-16 hour days...plus usually weekends. I would eat breakfast lunch and dinner at work. and part of that half a year at home was spent traveling to other cities for weeks and months at a time. SO much for being back at home sweet home.

Now that it's over though.....I have a new appreciation and outlook for my valueable time and all the little things I use to take for granted. Like being able to sit down and relax for an hour on a big comfty couch Or sleep in a bed/

You may be burning out. You must realise the signs and no matter what... take some time off work! Goodness, I just missed Melbourne Cup in Melbourne which is (supposedly) a big money night however I left because I knew I was burnt out... money comes and goes however if you want to last (especially if you are full time/this is your only employment) you must look after yourself first and foremost ignoring the potential loss of income at times.

Work hard for three weeks and take 5 consecutive nights off (work 2 nights that week) or work 5-6 nights your first week, 3-4 nights your second week and only 2 nights your third week and repeat.

If you can afford to, take a 10 night working holiday... work for 5 nights then allow the rest of your holiday/trip be a vacation. This is what I did one time so that I could recharge and not loose myself in my business (as a stripper). I earnt an income whilst also being in a place I had never been before ... and enjoyed it as a tourist as well!

You need to get to sleep right away when you get home. Getting to sleep four hours earlier will make a huge difference.

I hope I don't offend anyone by contributing to this thread, but I noticed it and wanted to put my two pence in. A huge proportion of my waking time is spent at work. I get up at 6am, into work at 8, work till about 8 or 10pm, earn a quid, go to sleep at midnight and do it all over again. I reckon I do about 70+ hours of work a week, sometimes including weekends. If there's an urgent project on sometimes I'll be required to work through the night to have it ready for the "normal" work day the following day. If you want to make money, you need to put the work in I'm afraid.

And why do I do it? So I can spend it all on the weekend and then go about earning it all over again!

I did notice on moving here to the US that people seem to work much longer hours and have less leisure time here than in the UK however. I'm not sure if that extends to dancing as I have little experience in that I'm afraid.
