Default paid collection, no receipt yet

Hi guys, I have a little problem. I recently paid an old collection. The agency told me it would take 21 days to process and the check to go through before they sent a letter stating it was paid. They told me once I received the letter I was to send 3 copies to all three credit bureaus. I called today because I paid the collection on the 10th of October and no letter yet. The man who was handling my account told me he would send it today by noon and I should receive it in 7-10 days and if not I could call and he would send another out. My gut feeling was that it wasn't his top priority. I went ahead and called the bank to get a copy of the check because it already cleared the bank. Can I send a copy of the cleared check as payment to the three credit bureaus?Btw, the said it would be marked as PAID, not paid collection.

    Thanks again for your help,
    Lisa

They lied. Sorry. In the future, if it didn't happen in writing then it didn't happen at all.

Still, couldn't I use the paid check as a receipt?

Send it to all three bureaus anyway. Include the front and back copy of the check, account number, your ss & address and a brief but thorough description of what you'd like done. That way they have to investigate it and provide you with evidence it has been updated.

Here is an example of what your letter could look like:
    DATE:

    CONSUMER:
    SOCIAL SEC.:
    BIRTHDATE:
    ADDRESS:

PLEASE FIND ENCLOSED CANCELED CHECK EVIDENCING THE ACCOUNT WITH __________ WAS PAID IN FULL ______ OF 2005. THE COLLECTION ACCOUNT WAS PAID IN FULL; SEE ATTACHED CHECK COPY. CORRECT THIS TO MY HARD CREDIT FILE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. PLEASE SEND ANY CORRESPONDENCE TO THE ABOVE ADDRESS.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE!

^ What she said. You can use the cancelled check to verify payment.

However, Lilith is right, as well. You always get a letter stating the INTENT of the creditor of clearing the account BEFORE you pay any money. If they are not willing to do that, then tell them to fuck off and if you have any money left over from paying off all of your other bills, you'll consider giving some to them.

    GreenId,
I would caution a little more patience. As you noted, sending out letters is not the highest priority to these folks, as it would be to any booreaucracy.

Give them until Monday the 14th and then get irate as hell and demand to see the management. I realize what they have done is not the letter/spirit of the agreement, but a credit agency is more likely to believe them than you.

I had a final phone bill from moving, which was pretty fucked up to begin with, but beside the point. It took like 2 months for them to get around to doing it, but the jerkoffs then sent letters to all 3 agencies. The issue with that was the bill was only reported to TU, so my exp & eq scores dropped when they added a paid collection notice. I blame that as the reason I can't get a continental 'world' mastercard.

I did call Transunion yesterday. They said that they would investigate it and for me to send a copy of the canceled check. Like Monty said I am being a litttle inpatient with them. This didn't happen overnight but I really want to clear it up asap so I can move forward. I have one more account I need to clear up and I do have the funds to do so. But my husband told me to wait until I got the letter on this one first. I don't know if I should go ahead and clear this one up as well or wait like he said. After I pay this last credit card bill off I'll only have medical bills to resolve and supposedly these aren't as damaging on your credit as credit card collections. I owe 11 grand in medical bills which I am sure I can negotitiate down. I really don't want to pay them. They are overpaid anyhow and the insurance companies were jerks about paying what they should have. I wonder if the two credit cards bills are paid and the medical bills aren't how much my credit will go up? I can't get any credit with a score of 447 (transunion) and 532 (equifax) so I am not accumuliating any new bills. So, it couldn't get any worse I suppose unless I claimed chapt. 7 which I have no intention of doing.

You wouldn't be able to, anyways. Under the new laws...you probably wouldn't qualify.

The paid collections will help your credit. But, what will really help your credit is getting that stuff paid and getting new, current, positive credit.

    Good luck!

Oh, and if you are dealing with a different credit collection agency, go ahead and pay everything off...but, get the TERMS IN WRITING FIRST!! Then pay.

Bankruptcy would hurt you more. Even under the old law, that would be on your credit for ten years and bad credit for seven. But with the new laws, you would have a bankruptcy stuck on your record and still paying on the debt. It sounds like you are doing what you need to do. Calling the credit unions and disputing so that they will investigate and showing proof of payment.

As Venus said "You always get a letter stating the INTENT of the creditor of clearing the account BEFORE you pay any money." This is really important.

I think hospital bills depends. I believe creditors do look more negative at a credit card debt than a hospital. I think it would also depend on if the bill something that could not be helped, such as illness or emergency. Perhaps you could try this. Maybe you could negotiate with the hospital. You can ask if you set up a payment arrangement, if they will list on your credit "paying as agreed" or some term like that. Just settle on a payment arrangement you think you can afford. I'm not sure if this is negotiable, but it would certainly be worth a try. I think most people would rather work something out to get their money than to not get anything.

About taking your husband's advice, I think you should go ahead and take care of the other bill and be done with it. The longer you wait, the longer it will take to get the credit clean. Just make sure you get their "promise" to remove the collection upon receipt of payment. Tell them you will send payment as soon as you get your letter of intent.

Good luck and let us know how it all works out!
