    Default Living in Vegas

OK....this is for all those serious dancers who make the trip out to Vegas for a few weeks or months and try to rent vs. paying hefty hotel prices on the weekends. I searched for a weekly rental and thought I finally found a decent enough place (Shelter Island Apts) on Swenson St. in East Las Vegas. This area has several weekly rentals for around $200, but it is a BAD area.

My car was stolen about a week after I got there, and the guy who stole it lived in the same building. He was caught a few days later when he tried breaking into another ladies apt. in that building, and I found out he sold my car for a 1/4oz of dope and it was now in Mexico.

Not to say this happens to everyone, but this sort of thing is common in East Vegas according to the cab drivers and cops. My advise is to not skimp on the living arrangements and pay that $400-600 a week, or even just stay in a halfway decent hotel on the strip or a nice part of town. This is the 2nd bad experience I've had with renting a room/apt.

Gosh, We could have warned you about that area.

I have been going to Vegas for years and even have a storage space there. Here is what I recommend.

Siena Suites just opened up last December on Boulder Hwy and Russell Road on the Henderson border near Galleria Mall. The suites are new and not many drifters hanging there. The rates will fluctuate if an event is in town. This is where I stay when I come to town for a week or more.

Extended Stay America on Valley View is good.

Budget Suites on Tropicana towards Valley View is decent. Don't stay at the one on Tropicana next to the AM PM.

Emerald Suites on Tropicana or S Las Vegas Blvd are decent, but they do rent rooms nightly and you could get bumped if an event is in town.If you know how long you plan to be in town pay up front for those weeks.

Vegas is just like living in any other city if you stay away from the tourist and transient areas. I never go in casinos, and the only time I go to the strip is by taking the back entrance to Fashion Show Mall or to work. All the tourist trraffic drives me crazy. Just don't stay in suites with a lot of foot traffic or hanger outers.

I have stayed in a few iffy suites like Budget on Rancho, and Sportsmens on Boulder and Tropicana. Never again. Sportsmen had police action regularly. Budget had too many people coming out of the woodwork.

You don't need to stay in a $600 a week place. The ones I mentioned might run you $450 during an event (you can negotiate rent at Siena) but other than that no more than $300-$350 for the week. Pay 30 days up front and you save tax and get a monthly rate at Budget. Don't stay at any other Budget Suites but the one I mentioned. Try to get a room downstairs with parking in front if at all possible and you can keep an eye on your car and get from your car to the room quicker.

Good luck and sorry you had such a bad experience.
