Default Dancing in a foreign country...from America

Ok, so I'm thinking way far ahead but I thought I'd just test out the waters for responses. So...I'm planning on studying abroad for next fall semester. Some places that I'm thinking of are... London (or somewhere in England), Spain, Japan, or Australia. Since I'd be there for a whole semseter, I am already anticipating running up a large tab, so it would help if I could find some part time work. Here are my questions about dancing in another country:

    1. Do you think I could pull off working without a car?
    2. Do you think customer's would enjoy the fact that I am an American?
    3. Would I have to get a work visa? Do you think clubs would be hesitant to hire me?
    4. Do they have tax returns or something similar that I would have to file or do you think I could keep the money under the table?

I think those are the main questions on my mind. If anyone can share their knowledge about this, it would be helpful. Thanks so much ladies!

In Australia, you would have to get work permission added to your student visa after you arrive in the country. While school is in session, you can only work a maximum 20 hours a week, and you must maintain a good GPA and at least 80% attendance to avoid deportation. During school holidays, you can work as much as you like. You will have to get a tax file number and declare your earnings and pay taxes on them. I wouldn't recommend working under the table, as you will get the money back when you leave.

I got my Master's in Australia and I am an American, so feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the student visa process or anything like that! I lived on the Gold Coast. I wasn't stripping then but I hear it's the most high-contact city in the country, which makes sense because it's their touristy party beach town (sort of like Fort Lauderdale or Key West is here). I did travel quite a bit while I was there too so hopefully I can help with any tips on being an American in Oz.

Yekhefah has you headed on the right track.

    1. Do you think I could pull off working without a car?

Yes. I am only buying a car because I am starting to get involved in agency/private stripping and require one so I can be eligible for more waitress and show bookings. As far as clubs go, you can either strive to live close by the club so transportation is minimalised or at the worse catch a taxi to/from work. I would advise you stick with working in clubs whilst in Australia not agency work.

    2. Do you think customer's would enjoy the fact that I am an American?
Yes and no. Australia is a multi-cultural country. Besides the fact that we have alot of US programs on TV and US movies... we are used to America and Americans.

    3. Would I have to get a work visa? Do you think clubs would be hesitant to hire me?

The ATO (Australian Tax Office) is cracking down on the exotic dance industry in re: clubs. The majority and best clubs will not hire you without the proper paperwork. Yekhefah can most likely help you out here more than me. I only know how to help you from an Australian citizen point of view.

    4. Do they have tax returns or something similar that I would have to file or do you think I could keep the money under the table?

You wouldn't be able to keep the money under the table and I would never ever recommend this method anyway. It is better for you in the short and long term to declare your income. Believe me... pay your taxes as you are bound to get them back anyway.

Quick addition: I don't know if it works the same way for exotic dancers, but my ex-husband had a REALLY hard time finding work in Australia. They take care of their own first, and several people told him point-blank that they won't hire Americans. We have a really lousy reputation down under (which is completely earned; the majority of Americans that I saw down there were uptight, obnoxious assholes). Most of the people were very friendly and cheerful, and I got along well with everyone, but it was really hard for my ex.

I didn't work while I was there, except the couple of times I tended bar for tips with a friend of mine. And maybe the exotic dance industry is different, I don't know. But be warned that it could be very difficult finding a job because they are going to hire an Australian first whenever they can.
