Try Mucinex but if it's an infection you need an antibiotic and actually, I don't think they even give you meds for a sinus infection. You just kind of have to wait it out. Hang in there!!!

when i had a sinus infection my doctor gave me some type pills to take like two times a day they worked but for got what they were called.

You can call a dr and explain your money prob, because your not wanting pain meds they might be willing to call in a prescription to a pharmacy. I've done this for bronchidus and a couph.
What you probably have is a nasel drip, cant think of the technical term, its when the area behind your nose is produsing to much mucus from a bacterial infection.
The problem with these infections is that they tend to reinfect you constantly, so wash sheets and pillow cases every other day, and spray lysol on all countertops and door handles, use alcahol on keyboard and phone, ect. and you can also use triple acting anti bacterial ointment on the outer edge of the nose, and cold cream on the inside of the nose to prevent chafing. My dad used to snif salt water, and gargle salt water to make them go away, but that burns, does work though.
Hope you get better soon, and if your at work, use a hand sanitiser before and after you blow nose or touch face every time, also, don't drink from any glass, use straws.
Tylonal Cold and Sinus helps, but I think you are going to have to see a DR for the infection. You could call a Dr you have been to before and explain the $$ circumstances and ask if they can give you samples. Also there is this stuff called Coraphed and it ROCKS, of course it helps because of the ephedra in it. I'll try to find it.... oh, CorAFed by Swift. Call around to you rlocal drug stores and see if they have it. Maybe print the page I have linked.

I know Im a bad girl for ignoring it, but I had the same problem as you-I had a sinus infection and no money for antibiotics. But i get them pretty frequently, so I just toughed out my infection ad it went away on its own. I just treated the symptoms. Of course it took forever for it to go away, but hey I also have tons of Vicodin
Im a bad example, no one pay attention to me![]()

Garlic oil caps are supposted to have an antihistimine effect. I take one every day, they are anitfungal, antiviral, & anitbacterial. I have suffered w/seasonal allergies since July (this year was the worst). I also take @ least 1,000 mg vitamin C. More is better, you have to get used to it, the acidity can irritate your bowel, & take w/calcium & B6.

Do you have any low-income clinics in your area? We had one where I used to live, and back when I qualified, it was $15 to see a Dr. Meds were cheaper also. Get well soon!
Sorry, I know this is gross but it does make a difference...
Is the mucus green or clear? If it's clear, you have allergies or a viral infection and you'll just have to get through it. If it's green, you have a bacterial infection and antibiotics would help - just be sure to use an alternate form of birth control if you're on the pill, and take ALL the antibiotics even if you start feeling better. Either way, make sure you drink plenty of fluids.
If you develop a cough, GO TO THE DOCTOR. I am now living with severe asthma for the rest of my life because a sinus infection turned into bronchitis and damaged my bronchial passages. This costs me a fortune in steroid and albuterol inhalers and puts a significant crimp in my outdoor activities - trust me, you DON'T want asthma. The first time you cough, go to the doctor no matter what it costs.

not to be gross but im coughing up brownish greens clear stuff. and im coughing alot last nite i had a coughing attack and my throat got dry and i seen a little bit of blood in it cause my throat was dry cause of all the coughing. we have medical but i dont quilfy for it cause i have no kids and we have a map program but u have to be in the hospital with a broken leg or something so im screwed. i should have not canceled my medical insurance but i couldnt afford it anymore. im going to find a cheaper insurance now since fall and winter is the worst times getting sick. and its the only time i get sick too.

You really need to see a doc. Last winter I had the worst sinus infection of my life. If you are seeing any greenish discharge, it's an infection. From the nasal passages it's your sinuses. If your coughing it up it's bronchitis. You need antibiotics. I waited with mine thinking it would go away, well my bf ended up taking me to the emergency room. I never had such severe pain in my sinuses. It hurt just to open my eyes and try and focus on something. Once I took the antibiotics for a few days it was sweet relief.
And as Yekhefah said.....if you don't treat a serious infection you could have a life long problem. I had a bout of bronchitis myself years ago.....and I too suffer from asthma now. Never had any asthma problems before either.
Maybe you can work with a payment plan. See if a doctor will work with you. No one should go without care if they truely need it.

There should be a low-cost clinic somewhere in your area. You NEED to go to the doctor and get on an antibiotic right away! If you think insurance is expensive when you're healthy, try getting insurance at all once you have asthma. Not to mention the insane expense of inhalers and such. It's really important that you go, and there are low-cost clinics everywhere for the uninsured. If you're in California, look for one with a name in Spanish, like "Clinica de Familia" or something. They will be low-cost or even free, depending on your income.
Even a regular Dr. visit is usually only $80-100. My Dr., and many others, give discounts for cash payments and for patients paying out of pocket (mine discounts 20%). The Dr. usually will give you samples instead of an Rx to save you money. You need to go to a Dr. and putting it off will only potentially cost you more money in the long run.

You absolutely cannot differentiate the difference between allergies, virus, or bacteria by color of mucus. Brown mucus indicates aspergillosis, but even that isn't that specific.Originally Posted by Yekhefah
I dont know about where you live, but here, ifyou go to a walk in clinic it costs liek 50 bucks. If you tell the doc that youdotn have much money for scripts and you would appreciate a generic brand he may just have some samples for you to take home. My old doc almost ner gave me scripts, he would just give me the samples. Call a local clinic and ask them what it costs for a visit, chances are it wont be more than a houndred dollars. Take a lot of day quill and niquill till you go. a 50 dollar visit is deffinitly worth feeling better. They may even work with you on that, like 25 now and 25 later.

Oftentimes docs will give you med samples for free when you're a cash customer and they know you don't have insurance. Especially if it's a straight male and you're a hot chickI've rarely paid for meds
It's worth an office visit if you're really sick to get the needed meds.

Mucinex is Guaifenesin generically, I agree you should take that. Also breathe steam, and maybe take oil of oregano capsules -- natural antibiotic. I nearly got bronchitis once and it went away when I started doing that stuff.
According to several nurses I know, you can. Allergies and viral infections are both clear and you can't tell, but yellow or green means a bacterial infection. I have two friends and a mother who are nurses, and of course all my mom's friends. They taught me that from an early age so I'd know whether I needed an antibiotic or not (I have fussy sinuses).Originally Posted by Adrenaline

If you have a sinus infection, you need to go to a doctor. Your best bet is going to a doctor that you have history with and explaining your circumstances. If they know you a bit, they are more apt to really help you out when you need it.
sorry you're sick. I just got sick and feel like crap. I rarely go to the doctor when I'm sick. In fact, last time I went he told me that there might not be anything he can do to help me and people tend to get better when they get better with or without a doctor's help. Don't take that as medical advice though because I'm not a doctor or nurse. How long have you been sick?

i got sick monday nite coughing alot and yesterday i had to go to work and ask if someone can close for me there was think god. i went to the store and bout some medicine for sinus cold and my mom bought that airborn stuff and a thermonitor well i got home and put the thermontor in under my tongue and i had a 100.2 fever. today i feel way better more alert and i dont have a fever no more i check and it said 98.1. ill post tomorrow on how i am feeling. i got sick really suddenly i think cause of the cold i think i get cold very easyly.
Okay so you are coughing & sneezing up greenish yellow shit.... then you really do need to take some sort of antibiotic, even if you do a bit of research and go to the health food store and ask them for a natural antibiotic then you will get some relief. Every community has some sort of low income clinic, please look in your local phone book and find one!
I too didn't realize what a serious bronchial infection I had until it led to walking pneumonia and horrid chronic asthma problems that I will have forever. So please call the doc you have seen before and tell them what is going on, if it gets worse you could end up with several $100+ medications just to treat it.

Are you coughing up the brownish-green sputum out of your lungs or is it nasal congestion dripping down your throat and causing you to spit it up. Either way you need to see a MD. If you explain that you will be paying cash up front and ask for a discount because you are self-employed they will usually give one. My MD gives 30% off because they figure by the time they file insurance and include-write off's, etc. they will be lucky to get 70%. I get bronchitis in the spring and fall. I have allergies and asthma as well. A typical, uncomplicated visit at my MD is $90 plus 30% off which is 63 dollars. That's not to bad in my opinion. Also remember to ask for samples. The antiboitic is what is going to get your wallet They are a couple of cheap ones out there like Amoxicillin but my body has built up immunity to them already. Ask for samples anyway. Also, the K-pac is another cheap up and I think you can get a rebate on it still. Over the counter for nasal and chest decongestion meds are sudafed and tussin dx. If you have allergies and year round allergy med like Claritin isn't bad. I think Allergra is only sold OTC in Canada. Also, do wash your sheets, change toothbrushes, etc. like someone else mentioned. Gargling in salt water won't hurt either. Drink plenty of water too, it helps loosen the sputum up. Don't eat dairy, it does the opposite. Broth or chicken soup is also a good "cold food". Hope you get well soon.

Mucus color significance is a medical myth that has been passed on through the years. It really means nothing. You need x-rays to diagnose sinusitis.Originally Posted by Yekhefah
I am a nurse and in my experience no one has ever had a x-ray just to diagnose sinusitis. If the md wants to give just to diagnose just that than the infection is extremely severe, you will hospitilized and possibly have surgery to drain the sinuses if the infection has reached that far back. Or he just wants your money. Also, nurses including MD's always pay attention to mucus color in case of an infection. Also a temp is a good sign of infection.
