How much money should I take?

I'm planning to move at the end of the year to a completely different state down south.

How much is the minimum amount of cash I should have with me? I'm thinking about 2 grand- but I've never done something like this before and I'm nervous.

I looked into those extended stay hotels and to spend a month there is at least $1,000! I couldn't believe it- I thought the point was to give people a deal for staying a while.

I don't want to get an apartment because Atlanta seems pretty spread out and I'd hate to work in one area and live in the opposite end of the city.

    Any advice? Thanks!

Take as much as you possibly can. You don't know how long it'll take you to get settled.

I don't think you can put any one set price tag on that... You need to do some serious research of the cost of living down there and have a concrete job situation waiting for you when you arrive. And since you're actually moving down to live there, start looking for housing now, and have it set up when you get to town.

Extended stay hotels are EXPENSIVE AS HELL! I was thinking about moving to Pensacola and when I couldn't find an apartment I looked in that. I think it would have cost me over $3000/month to stay in one. All I can say is moving is always more expensive than you think so save as much as you can!

I just want to say good luck! Basically just try to save as much as possible, and do some serious research before you go.

But I've known people who've winged it, and moved across the country with only about $200! That takes some serious guts.

I hope everything goes well, and that you find a good club to work at.

When we moved from RI to here in April.. We really didn't take much. Just money for the trip itself, groceries when we got here, and deposits on the utilities and cable, since both required it for new service. We were a little different than your situation though, because we had already secured an apartment and all that. Since you won't be doing that, you'll probably need to take a bit more than we did.

I think all-in-all, we took about $1500 with us. But of course, Dan was just transferring his job and not looking for a new one.. So, two weeks later, he had another paycheck.

Just make sure you take enough to get you started. Only you can determine that by thinking about your needs.

    Good luck to you!

Definetly good luck! Moving and settling somewhere new is expensive so a ball park figure to move to Atlanta in my guess would be about $5000. It may seem high, but once you think about all the little things that cost money when you are away from "home" then you realize where all your money goes. If you have enough time to save the $5k then I would try to do it before you go.

Do you not know anyone at your new destination ? Like the thoughts of many others here you need to check it out a bit it can be more costly not knowing anything about the area . Not sure if you have a job linned out but if not you should have at least 3 k in my opinion . Good luck whatever you decide .

IMO it's always better to have more money put away for this kind of a transition than you will actually need,so you don't worry or run out of money. You can always find what to do with the money left over, but I would guess around $5k would be a good amount for that.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I don't know anyone down in Atlanta....I decided to move out there for the educational opportunities and the different places available to work.

I'm trying to learn everything I can about the city- I have been there before to visit a friend, but she has moved since then.
I guess I may have to spend an extra month saving up before making the trip.

I moved to Vegas with 300 dollars. I had spent 1000 dollars on a plane ticket and hotel accomidations for a week.

I used that money to get my sherrif's card (we didn't need a business liscence at this time) and to take a cab to a couple places to audition, and to buy a new outfit to audition in.

By the time I started my first night working, I didn't even have money to pay my house fee. I had to pay it at the end of the night, lol.

Thankfully, things worked out in my favor and I ended up making a grand my first night here, and more later that week.

I ran into my friend Raqeul and we ended up getting a place together, and I didn't go home.

This was really stupid, because I didnt have money to buy a car, and I was living out of hotels instead of getting an apartment, and I wasted a ton of money on rental cars and hotel rooms for three months until I moved in with another girl and saved up and bought a car out here (I had a car back home too).

You need at least 3500 dollars to move down there, minimum.

    Learn from my mistakes, LOL.

Don't forget down payments on apts (they prefer checks, usually) are at least 1 monthrent and 1 month security. Sometimes 2 months and security. Could be a couple grand right there!

I have moved across country with only a couple hundred dollars (ie, drove in my car with whatever belongings I could fit and a couple hundred in my pocket when I left the house), and believe me, that's only for younguns with more energy and enthusiasm than smarts I did it a couple times, stopped to work at random places along the way cuz even in the 90s $200 didn't get you across country in a car! Well, I might have made it if I'd slept in the car, but even in my younger days I wasn't quite that nuts LOL!

Anyway, considering you are going not knowing where you'll be working and such, you should plan on staying in some kind of motel or short term apt situation, which as you know runs about $1k per month on the cheaper end. I'd want a month's rent and a little extra to work with, $2k should do it. If you're going to be stripping there you could make your initial rent and deposits for an apt once you're there, most likely within a week.

If you want to have enough to move into an apt right away, obviously you'll have to take more, but you could easily get by on $2k to get down there and get started if you're stripping.

If you don't have a car you'll need a credit card or a fat cash deposit available to rent a car (there are places in the yellow pages that will rent with just cash deposits) - you won't want to be stuck depending on cabs in Atlanta. That will get expensive and tiresome fast!

I decided against getting an apartment because I'd like to know how much money I'll be bringing in a week before I commit to an apartment. And I can't distinguish one neighborhood from another from just a guide book.

I found a link for these suites that are about $180/week intownsuites so I'll go there first until I figure things out- it looks okay from the site I just hope it's not dangerous.

Bridgette, thankfully I have a car, so I won't have to deal with any rentals.

proMarket, I have a banking acct- I won't have all my cash on me.

If I were you I'd take $2k. More would be great but that will get you started for 2-4 weeks so you can start working and explore a bit. You know you'll make money once you're working there.
