I just got one and was wondering if anyone else has one. How will will it work? I just want it to loose a few extra pounds i have put on, lose the layer of fat i have developed. Whats the news on these things?

Elliptical machines are great for significantly reducing the physical impact of cardio workouts on your joints (particularly your knees)--but don't look to machines to do it all. Don't forget diet is half of the equation.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

I used it alot when i was loosing alot of wieght. Its easy on the knees and burns a good amount of calories b/c your working most all your limbs. A good 30-45 should do good. Just remember diet is just as important.

It's very easy on the joints. As with any cardio machine, most of them are effective as long as you USE them. OTOH, you may see people spinning backwards, but I don't recommend it. Several physical therapists (enough to concern me) said that going reverse on ellipticals can be straining, and don't recommend it for anyone. FYI.
As with any weight loss, diet AND WEIGHT TRAINING is a very big part of the equation. You have a great machine- watch your diet, throw in some weight sessions, and you'll be on your way to looking fit and healthy!

oh, and don't trust the calorie counters on machines, even ones that ask you to plug in your weight. It's a known fact that machine calorie counters over-inflate the number, some as much as 200%.... ;-_-
cool, I am liking it so far but i get out of breath before my body really gets tired .. smoker. I am hoping using it might help the out of breath thing. I figured the calorie counter was off. I am starting out with 15-20 min on it, any longer and i feel like i am hyperventilating. My body doesnt get really tired but my lungs do. I figured I would slowly increase my time as my lungs get in better shape.

You're doing great Lady. Push yourself as far as you can. No one expects you to get on there your first week and go 10miles ok. Workout as hard as you can...take a break, and try to hop back on. Yes, you are doing the smart thing..let your lungs get back in shape. Are you cutting out the smoking too?
The elliptical is a great machine. My gym doesn't have one (it's a community gym) but man how I wish they did!
Wish you the best babe!

I love going on the elliptical machine! It burns more calories than walking on a treadmill. The bad thing is, there aren't very many of them at the gym I go to, and if you go at a busy time, they're always taken. However, I can never stay on the elliptical for more than 15-20 minutes without getting all sweaty and feeling really winded. So either I'm out of shape or overexerting myself! I don't have this problem with the treadmill-sometimes I walk on the treadmill between 3.5 mph and 3.8 mph and I could stay on there forever! You will definitely tone up if you use the elliptical machine, eat well, and do some weight training too.

The counters on those mochaines are often wrong. Only b/c they cant presonalize it to EVERY type of person. Best way to see if the thing is even close to the calories burned count is take your hert rate with the machine. Two fingers on the neck is what I do to test my heart rate against what the machine says.

I love mine, it should help you burn off a few lbs. Start off with 30 minutes and go for more if you feel like you can. I always go until I am at almost exhaustion [but then again I used to run until I'd throw up] so maybe start easier with less than 30 minutes and see how it goes for you.

Thanks guys, i need the motivation
The elliptical trainer is also good for shaping your butt. Also if it has the arms (some don't) you can give almost your whole body a good work out instead of mostly your legs with the treadmill. The elliptical trainer is harder work than the treadmill in my opinion. If you are a smoker I suggest cutting back on the smoking and working up to your full capacity on the machine over time. Try 10-20 minutes your first weak on level 1. Then each week add 5-10 minutes to your workout and one level. Also some machines have different programs which add variety in case you get bored. And don't forget those headphones! Good luck!

For a great butt workout, I love the stairmill at the gym. they look like escalators except they're going the reverse direction. I call them the stair of hell (to give me a heavenly bum!)
yes, kittenkat, the stairmill is awesome for the butt. by far the most challenging piece of equipment in the gym, imo. when i go to the gym i do the elliptical for 60 mins and the stairmill for 30. most days i just run outside.
lady -- how is the elliptical on your new boobies? (i'm 1.5 days po)
