    Default Inexpensive motels in Phoenix

    Hey there,

I'm thinking of making a trip to Phoenix to dance in February. I went to Phoenix last year for a vacation, but I've never danced there. I am thinking of going there for two weeks and I'm thinking of trying the Hi-Liter. If I don't get a job there, then I'll try somewhere else. I am looking for an inexpensive motel to stay at, preferably near the Hi-Liter. Before anyone tells me to do a search, I will say that I did do a search and came up with lots of info about Phoenix clubs, but I came up with absolutely nothing about motels to stay at in Phoenix, which is the info I'm really looking for. Thanks in advance!

www.intownsuites.com. The Chandler Blvd location is great. Also Budget suites has 3 locations and they are decent. www.budgetsuites.com.

These places are the best way to go and when i'm not staying with family when in town I stay in one of these places.

Extended Stay America is good to. www.extendedstayamerica.com. DO NOT stay in their Crossland Suites location on 51st Ave and Mc Dowell as the foot traffic in the area requires you to watch your back. Intown Suites has a second location next door but the hanger outer situation is not as bad.

There is a HUGE NEW extended stay suite that opened up at 83rd AVe.and Mc Dowell which is nice. The name slips my mind, but if you go there get there before 6, because the office closes then.

I can tell you now it will be difficult at best to find a decent inexpensive hotel near the HiLiter in February. There aren't alot of hotels in the neighborhood and most of what's there isn't cheap.

I have stayed at the Motel6 at I-17 and Indian School for $3x a night and it was a tad crappy. Didn't feel dangerous but the rooms were kinda musty smelling. Other than that it was a reasonable enough place to sleep after work, not nasty or anything, and cheap enough. It's about 10-15 minutes from HiLiter. I think I recall one of the buildings is newer so if you stay there, ask for a room in that building - the one closest to the highway I think. I stayed there twice and there was a definite difference from one room/building to the next.

I've also stayed at the Red Roof Inn on Camelback at 7th Ave, about 5 minutes from HiLiter and MUCH nicer. Looks like it's been recently remodeled, more security and well-maintained. It's in the neighborhood of $60 / night including tax.

Doing a search on orbitz.com I find a Travelodge and a La Quinta also on 1-17 near the Motel6 - at $50-59 a night in Feb. For the money and location I'd go with the Red Roof definitely. ESPECIALLY if you won't be renting a car - cab fare will run $10 max with tip from there to HiLiter and there's a shopping center with Target, McD's and other small restaurants across the road, plus a good family-run Mexican restaurant across the parking lot where I got dinner a few times for $10 including tip. And you can get a room with minifridge and microwave by requesting at checkin.

I know that neighborhood pretty well - lived there for 7 months. It looks somewhat shady but it's ok. A couple blocks nearest the HiLter probably have the most to watch out for; there's a really shitty trailer park and low income apts down the side street, but the worst I ever saw or heard of was some drunk guy puking in the middle of 12th street and staggering (or should I say wobbling) down the middle of the street afterwards. He seemed quite surprised when he finally realized those lights shining on him were my approaching headlights and almost fell on his face trying to get off the road. LOL At any rate you'll be fine if you stick to the main roads and go straight from work to your destination.

HTH and if you have more questions feel free.

Budget Suites on Indian School and 5th Ave across the street from the Leather and Lace costume store is decent, and only about 2.5 miles from Hi-Liter.

As I always advocate, traveling with your own transportation is best because it is cheaper and you can get around any city you go to cheaply and easily. Phoenix is easy to get around but it is spread out and cab fares get costly.

We are leaving South Dakota and headed to Phoenix Saturday night after work and will be there Monday by noon. It really pays off in the long run to drive.

I would focus on weekly rent places as rates get jacked up during the winter.

Bridgette, you must of slept with one eye open staying at that Motel 6 on I-17 and Indian School. I've stayed there before for 2 nights. That area has really gone downhill.

Or if you don't mind driving a bit there are a bunch of hotels (Red Rood Inn, Extended Stay America, Amerisuites) off the I-10 at Chandler Blvd and Ray Rds in the Awautukee/Chandler area. I'd guesstimate a 15-20 minute drive to HL, 5 min to CC-
Tempe, 10 min to CC-Phoenix, 20 min to Scottsdale Rd clubs since it's right off the hiway. I agree with Tina...YOU NEED A CAR in Phoenix. The public transit system is not on par with other major metropolitan areas, cab far will quickly add up to more than you would spend on a daily rate for a compact rental car.

Tina, I guess I don't consider anything I've seen on the streets here to be very serious. New Orleans looks much more scary and I used to trapse all around there on foot - well, I knew where NOT to walk too Also many parts of San Juan. I've also stayed at that ExtendedStay you mentioned earlier as a place to avoid, and altho the young couple fighting at 6am next door one morning pissed me off, I didn't find it dangerous. Phoenix's wannabe ghetto just doesn't scare me at all. heh

I agree you need a car here. If you're under 25/21, don't have a credit card, etc - there ARE places that will rent to you here with just a cash deposit; I've seen them in the phone book. I'm sure the car you get won't be quite as nice as a regular rental, but it will beat depending on cabs in this mega-spread out city!

Britney, my bf lives in that neighborhood, off I-10 at Ray Rd, and it took me about 30 minutes to get to HL from his house.

If you're ever looking for lodging, restauraunts, etc. near a specific location, here is how you do it. This worked well for me when I went to Colorado.

    1. Go to Mapquest and plug in the street address of that location (in this case the address of the club).
    2. On the "find nearby" line above the map, change the "Top Categories" drop down box to whatever you're looking for. (In this case, "Hotels"). You should get an extensive list sorted by distance to the club.

Here for example would be a list of hotels near HiLiter.
    http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp...=US&cat=Hotels

If you are looking for a specific hotel or chain, you can also type in the name of that hotel in the text field to the left of the drop box (make sure the drop box is NOT set on a category, or it will override what you type).

A list of Red Roof Inns near Hi-Liter
    http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp...cat=Red%20Roof
    A list of Motel 6's near Hi-Liter
    http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp...&cat=Motel%206
    A list of LaQuinta's near Hi-Liter
    http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp...at=La%20Quinta

Then to browse for room rates, go to that chain's website, or to a site like Orbitz where you can compare between chains.

Thank you everyone for the info! I don't have any definite plans yet, but I want to get out of this cold ass Wisconsin weather and go somewhere nice and warm for a while. It's 20 degrees here today, 7 degrees with the windchill! I am about 80% sure I am coming to Phoenix in February, but I will keep you posted with my plans. Thanks again!

Yeah, I'm wearing sweaters already. I don't like to take a jacket to work so on the way home I have the heater on in the car. LOL

Boy, I'm anxious to get out of the icebox too. The low was 3 degrees here in Northern SD Wed night, and the high yesterday was 19. Today there is a WARM up to 40 degrees.

If I weren't making money I wouldn't be up here.

Two more nights and desert here I come for a week. Yay.
